Anhaltender weltweiter Protest gegen Yulin Hundefleischfestival
Vor kurzem wurde bekannt, dass die chinesische Regierung den Verkauf von Hundefleisch, während des alljährlichen Hundefleischfestivals in Yulin, verbieten lässt. Das kam zustande, wegen weltweiten, massiven Protesten empörter Bürger, lokalen Aktivisten und anderen Gruppen, mithilfe von unter anderem online Petitionen und sozialen Medien. Auch die chinesische Bevölkerung wird immer aufständiger. Eine chinesische Enquete von verschiedenen Tierschutzorganisationen zeigt, dass eine große Mehrheit der Befragten für ein Verbot des berüchtigten Yulin-Festivals ist und das Essen von Hundefleisch sogar komplett abgeschafft haben möchte. Die Partei für die Tiere ruft ihre Anhänger dazu auf, die Petition gegen den Verkauf von Hundefleisch zu unterzeichnen.
Während des jährlichen Yulin-Festivals am 21 Juni, werden ungefähr 10.000 Hunde geschlachtet und daraufhin von den Festivalgängern verspeist. Obwohl immer wieder behauptet wird, es wäre ein traditionelles Fest, besteht es erst seit 2009. Viele der Hunde sind gestohlene Haustiere. Außerdem sind die Hunde oft ernsthaft Krank und verwundet, und der Handel von Hundefleisch ist, angesichts des Risikos auf Tollwut und Cholera, eine ernstzunehmende Bedrohung der Volksgesundheit.
Tierschutzorganisationen vermelden, dass obwohl die chinesischen Autoritäten gesagt haben hart gegen Verletzungen des Verkaufsverbots von Hundefleisch auf dem Festival auftreten zu wollen, das Verbot kaum wirklich gehandhabt wird. Darum hat die Partei für die Tiere, gemeinsam mit anderen Organisatoren, ihre Anhänger dazu aufgerufen, die Avaaz-Petition weiter zu unterschreiben. So bleibt der Druck auf die chinesische Regierung hoch, so dass das Verbot dann auch wirklich gehandhabt wird. Seit dem Aufruf der Partei für die Tiere am 28. Juni, haben mehr als 4000 Anhänger der Partei für die Tiere in den Niederlanden die Petition bereits unterzeichnet. Weltweit wurden bereits Millionen Unterschriften gesammelt.
Chinesische Aktivisten weisen darauf hin, dass das Verbot von Hundefleisch während Yulin ein guter Schritt in die richtige Richtung sei, aber wir nicht vergessen dürfen, dass es ein viel größeres Problem gibt, das des täglichen Handel von Hundefleisch im gesamten Land. So ein Problem verlangt, nach Angaben der Aktivisten, eine holistische, konsequente Herangehensweise.
It was recently reported that the Chinese government was to ban dog meat sales at the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival, as a result of mass protests by concerned citizens, local activists and other groups throughout the world, through petitions and social media. In China too, more and more people are rebelling. A Chinese survey of several animal rights organisations shows that the vast majority of respondents are in favour of a ban on the notorious Yulin Festival and on eating dog meat altogether. The Party for the Animals calls upon its members to sign the petition against the sale of dog meat.
At the annual Yulin Festival on 21 June, around 10,000 dogs are slaughtered and eaten by visitors of the festival. Contrary to popular belief, the Yulin festival is not a traditional event but one invented in 2009. Many of the dogs are stolen pets. As many of the animals are seriously ill or injured, the dog meat trade poses a serious threat to public health considering the risk of rabies and cholera.
Animal welfare organisations report that, despite promises of the Chinese authorities to fight against the sale of dog meat, the ban is barely maintained. That is why the Party for the Animals and other organisations involved have called on their members to keep signing the Avaaz petition against Yulin, in order to put pressure on the Chinese government to uphold the ban. Since the Party for the Animals’ appeal of 28 June, over 4,000 supporters of the Dutch Party for the Animals have already signed the petition. Worldwide, millions of signatures have been collected.
Chinese activists point out that although the ban on dog meat sales at the Yulin Festival is a good step forward, we must not forget about the even bigger issue of the daily dog meat trade throughout the entire country. This problem needs a holistic and consistent approach, according to the activists.
