As férias parlamentares de verão terminaram o que significa que no ano vindouro eu novamente irei trabalhar duro na Câmara Baixa. Mesmo nas férias de verão eu não fiquei parada! Por exemplo, eu fui convidada para falar num congresso no Portugal sobre o futuro de nossa alimentação. Com essa conferencia o prefeito português esperou poder aumentar a consciência sobre uma alimentação sustentável, saudável e amigável aos animais. Conforme a organização para agricultura FAO das Nações Unidas vamos necessitar 60 por cento a mais de alimentos em 2050 para nutrir a crescente população mundial. Sendo que neste momento a Terra já se encontra sob grande pressão. Garfo e faca são as nossas armas mais poderosas para conservar a Terra para as próximas gerações. Foi um honra para mim poder pensar sobre a questão de como abordar pragmaticamente o problema alimentar mundial juntamente com cientistas, nutricionistas e políticos locais e nacionais nessa conferencia no Portugal. Todo o mundo pode ajudar um bocadinho!
Antes das férias de verão eu estive muito ocupada com a proibição da caça por prazer. No seu programa eleitoral o Partido do Trabalho (PvdA) disse que queria proibir a caça pelo prazer, mas quando chegou o momento de votar sobre o assunto aqui na Câmara Baixa esta promessa não foi mantida. A Fundação Animal & Direito ( Stichting Dier & Recht) apresentou uma queixa por motivo de mistificação e de engano contra o eleitor à organização holandesa ‘Reclame Code Commissie” que julga na base do Código Holandês para Propaganda se um anúncio está em desacordo com o Código. Desejamos muita boa sorte à Fundação Animal & Direito com este caso!
No primeiro fim de semana de agosto houve o anual Amsterdam Gay Pride. Desta vez o nosso partido tomou parte no desfile de barcos pelos canais de Amsterdam. E isto me orgulha muito! O Partido para os Animais é contra qualquer forma de discriminação e defende os interesses de grupos vulneráveis e/ou desfavorecidos. Foi uma óptima festa e o barco cheio de membros orgulhosos estava lindo. Para uma bela reportagem fotográfica, clique aqui.
Nas Ilhas Faroe (uma província autónoma da Dinamarca) acontecem cada verão matanças bárbaras de golfinhos sob o pretexto de “tradição”. Nisto os pescoços dos golfinhos são cortados e ganchos são enfiados nos orifícios de respiração. Abominável… Por isto mesmo eu perguntei ao nosso governo o que fizeram contra isto e se a Holanda quer dirigir-se gravemente ao governo dinamarquês sobre o assunto, pois verdadeiramente, isto deve parar!
Em pleno calor de verão infelizmente as pessoas ainda deixam cães em automóveis fechados, muitas vezes com consequências fatais. Pois num automóvel fechado a temperatura sobe muito rapidamente! Um grupo musical da Croácia que regularmente se expressa sobre questões de bem-estar animal mostrou por meio desse filmezinho com que rapidez as coisas podem acabar mal, em trancando-se num carro. Também o director de nosso departamento científico se trancou num desses carros quentíssimos. Quanta coragem para efectuar tal acção!
Também tivemos notícias animais especiais da Sérvia nesse verão. Um pequeno cão que salvou uma criança não sobreviveu esta sua acção heróica. O cãozinho recebeu agora uma estátua própria. Isto é muito especial, pois na Sérvia que é um país cheio de cães vadios e que enfrenta grandes problemas no campo do bem-estar animal, ainda não aconteceu que um animal fosse homenageado com uma estátua própria. Esperemos que com isto as pessoas comecem a pensar sobre a nossa relação com os animais.

The summer recess has come to an end, which means I am going to work hard again in the Lower House this year. It may have been summer holidays, but that does not mean I have not been busy!
For example, I was invited to speak at a conference on the future of our food in Portugal. With this conference, the Portuguese mayor hoped to raise awareness about sustainable, healthy and animal-friendly foods. According to the UN agricultural organisation FAO, we will need more 60% more food in 2050 to feed the growing world population. Whereas the planet is already under great pressure. Forks and knives are our most powerful weapons to save the world for future generations. I found it an honour to think along with scientists, nutritionists and national and local politicians on this conference in Portugal about the question of how to address the world food problem in a pragmatic manner. Everyone can lend a helping bite!
Before the summer, I was very busy with the ban on pleasure hunting. The election programme of the Labour Party (PvdA) stated they wanted to ban pleasure hunting, but they failed to fulfil their promise when this was voted on in the Lower House of Parliament. The Animal & Right Foundation filed a complaint with the Dutch organisation Advertising Code Committee for misguidance and deception of the electorate. I wish the Animal & Right Foundation the best of luck in this case!
The annual Amsterdam Gay Pride took place in the first weekend of August. This time, our party took part in the boat parade through the Amsterdam canals. And I am very proud of it! The Party for the Animals is against any form of discrimination and defends the interests of vulnerable and/or disadvantaged groups. It was a fine festivity and the boat full of proud members looked wonderful. For a great photo report, click here.
In the Faroe Islands (an autonomous province of Denmark), barbaric massacres of dolphins take place every summer, under the guise of “tradition”. The necks of dolphins are cut and hooks are inserted into their blow-holes. Gruesome… I have therefore asked our government what steps they have taken against this and whether the Netherlands want to critically confront the Danish government with this, because this really must stop!
Unfortunately, dogs are still left behind in locked cars in the summer heat, often with fatal consequences. In a closed vehicle, the temperature rises very fast! With this video, a musical band from Croatia who regularly speaks out on animal welfare issues showed how fast this can go wrong by locking themselves up in a car. The director of our scientific bureau also got into such a sweltering car this summer. What heroes to perform this act!
There was also special animal news from Serbia this summer. A little dog that saved a child did not survive the heroic act itself. The dog has now been given its own statue. This is very special, because Serbia, a country which has many stray dogs and huge problems in the area of animal welfare, has never before honoured an animal with its own statue. Hopefully, this makes people think about our relationship with animals.
