In augustus was ik te gast op het Rototom Sun Splash Festival in Spanje. In het Social Forum programma nam ik deel aan een forumdiscussie met als thema: Climate change, between cows and oil.
Ik ging onder andere in discussie met Sara Pizzinato van Greenpeace Spanje. Journalist Nacho Martin introduceerde ons voor de volle zaal en leidde de discussie. Vanuit Greenpeace werd de nadruk vooral op alternatieve energiebronnen gelegd als oplossing.
Met mijn focus op je mes en vork als wapen tegen de klimaatverandering kon ik het publiek van veelal jongeren een positieve boodschap meegeven. Je kunt een bijdrage leveren aan een beter klimaat door je voedingspatroon aan te passen en minder of (liever) geen vlees te eten. Als je meer wilt weten over de effecten van vleesconsumptie dan raad ik de documentaire Meat the Truth, die ik samen met het wetenschappelijk bureau van de Partij voor de Dieren gemaakt heb, van harte aan.
Leuk: Nacho at aan het begin van de dag nog vlees, maar was aan het einde van de dag vegetariër. Op het festival was overigens prima plantaardig eten te krijgen!
Het was mooi om te zien dat jonge mensen zo maatschappelijk betrokken zijn en graag in gesprek gaan vooral over wat ze zelf kunnen doen.
Vorige week kwam er interessant nieuws uit Frankrijk. De Franse staatssecretaris van handel wil dat de Europese Unie de onderhandelingen met de VS over de omstreden handelsdeal TTIP staakt, omdat de onderhandelingen met de VS niet eerlijk zouden verlopen. President Hollande noemde de onderhandelingen met de VS ook niet evenwichtig en zei dat er op deze manier nooit een deal kan komen voor het einde van dit jaar, zoals de Europese Commissie graag wil. Duitse vicekanselier Sigmar Gabriel heeft zelfs laten weten dat TTIP volgens hem feitelijk al mislukt is!
Deze gevaarlijke handelsdeal met de VS moet absoluut van tafel, dus het is goed om te horen dat er kritiek komt van Franse en Duitse politici. Nu nog meer kritiek vanuit Nederland graag!
Als laatste wil ik nog graag een leuk nieuwtje dat deze zomer voorbij kwam met jullie delen. Chiara Appendino, de nieuwe burgemeester van Turijn, wil van Turijn een vegetarische stad maken. Ze heeft hierover een manifest geschreven van maar liefst 62 pagina’s. Go Chiara!
Het zomerreces van de Tweede Kamer is voorbij, dus we gaan er vanaf deze week weer tegenaan!

In August, I was a guest at the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain. In the Social Forum Programme, I took part in a forum discussion themed ‘Climate change, between cows and oil’.
I discussed this theme with Sara Pizzinato of Greenpeace Spain, among others. The discussion was led by journalist Nacho Martin, who introduced us to the packed audience. Greenpeace especially focused on alternative energy sources as a possible solution.
Focusing on what we eat as a way of combating climate change, I was able to send a positive message to the mostly young audience. By adjusting your diet and eating less or rather no meat, you will contribute to a better climate. If you would like to know more about the impact of meat consumption, I heartily recommend my documentary Meat the Truth, which I made in cooperation with the Party for the Animals’ scientific bureau.
Nice to know: Nacho started the day as a meat eater, but ended it a vegetarian. Moreover, there were some great vegan options at the festival!
It was great to see how socially involved young people are and how they are eager to learn what they can do themselves.
Last week, there was some interesting news from France. The French State Secretary for Trade wants the European Union to cancel the negotiations with the United States on the controversial trade deal TTIP, because they are said to be unfair. French President Hollande called the negotiations with the US unbalanced and said that this way, no agreement will be reached before the end of the year, as desired by the European Commission. German vice chancellor Sigmar Gabriel even stated that, according to him, TTIP has de facto failed.
As this dangerous trade deal between the EU and the US should indeed be stopped, it is good to hear criticism from French and German politicians. Hopefully Dutch politicians will do the same!
To conclude, I would like to share with you an interesting piece of news that I picked up this summer. Chiara Appendino, the new mayor of Turin, wants to make Turin a vegetarian city. She has written a manifesto on her ideas of no less than 62 pages. Go Chiara!
Summer recess of the Lower House is over, so we are back in business this week!
