Nel mese di agosto sono stata ospite al Rototom Sun Splash Festival in Spagna. Nel Social Forum programma ho partecipato a una tavola rotonda sul tema: Cambiamento climatico, tra mucche e olio.
Ho discusso, tra gli altri, con Sara Pizzinato di Greenpeace Spagna. Il giornalista Nacho Martin ci ha introdotto alla platea e ha guidato la discussione. Da parte di Greenpeace l’accento è stato posto sulle energie alternative come soluzione.
Con la mia attenzione sul tuo coltello e la tua forchetta come arma contro il cambiamento climatico ho potuto dare al pubblico, di per lo più giovani, un messaggio positivo. È possibile contribuire a un ambiente migliore regolando le tue abitudini alimentari e mangiando meno o (preferibilmente) niente carne. Se vuoi sapere di più sugli effetti del consumo di carne, allora vi consiglio di cuore il documentario Meat the Truth, che ho fatto insieme con l’ufficio scientifico del Partito per gli Animali.
Bello: Nacho all’inizio del giorno mangiava ancora carne, ma era alla fine della giornata era diventato vegetariano. Durante il festival si poteva mangiare peraltro eccellente cibo vegetale!
È stato bello vedere che i giovani sono così socialmente coinvolti e amano parlare in particolare su ciò che possono fare loro stessi.
La settimana scorsa c’era una interessante notizia dalla Francia. Il sottosegretario francese per il commercio vuole che l’Unione Europea termina i negoziati con gli Stati Uniti sul controverso accordo sul commercio TTIP, perché i negoziati con gli Stati Uniti non si sarebbero svolto in modo onesto. Il presidente Hollande ha chiamato i negoziati con gli Stati Uniti, non equilibrati, e ha detto che in questo modo non si potrà mai ottenere un accordo prima della fine di quest’anno, come vorrebbe la Commissione europea. Il Vice-Cancelliere tedesco Sigmar Gabriel ha perfino fatto sapere che secondo lui il TTIP è di fatto già fallito!
Questo accordo commerciale pericoloso con gli Stati Uniti deve assolutamente sparire dal tavolo dei negoziati, quindi è bene sapere che la critica viene da politici francesi e tedeschi. Ora ci vuole ancora un più di critica dai Paesi Bassi per favore!
Infine, vorrei condividere con voi una grande notizia che è arrivato questa estate. Chiara Appendino, il nuovo sindaco di Torino, vuole trasformare Torino in una città vegetariana. Ne ha scritto un manifesto di ben a 62 pagine. Vai Chiara!
La pausa estiva del parlamento è finito, così da questa settimana ricominciamo le nostre battaglie!

In August, I was a guest at the Rototom Sunsplash Festival in Spain. In the Social Forum Programme, I took part in a forum discussion themed ‘Climate change, between cows and oil’.
I discussed this theme with Sara Pizzinato of Greenpeace Spain, among others. The discussion was led by journalist Nacho Martin, who introduced us to the packed audience. Greenpeace especially focused on alternative energy sources as a possible solution.
Focusing on what we eat as a way of combating climate change, I was able to send a positive message to the mostly young audience. By adjusting your diet and eating less or rather no meat, you will contribute to a better climate. If you would like to know more about the impact of meat consumption, I heartily recommend my documentary Meat the Truth, which I made in cooperation with the Party for the Animals’ scientific bureau.
Nice to know: Nacho started the day as a meat eater, but ended it a vegetarian. Moreover, there were some great vegan options at the festival!
It was great to see how socially involved young people are and how they are eager to learn what they can do themselves.
Last week, there was some interesting news from France. The French State Secretary for Trade wants the European Union to cancel the negotiations with the United States on the controversial trade deal TTIP, because they are said to be unfair. French President Hollande called the negotiations with the US unbalanced and said that this way, no agreement will be reached before the end of the year, as desired by the European Commission. German vice chancellor Sigmar Gabriel even stated that, according to him, TTIP has de facto failed.
As this dangerous trade deal between the EU and the US should indeed be stopped, it is good to hear criticism from French and German politicians. Hopefully Dutch politicians will do the same!
To conclude, I would like to share with you an interesting piece of news that I picked up this summer. Chiara Appendino, the new mayor of Turin, wants to make Turin a vegetarian city. She has written a manifesto on her ideas of no less than 62 pages. Go Chiara!
