Worldlog Week 46 – 2012

Fijn dat Barack Obama opnieuw president is geworden en zo erger heeft weten te voorkomen voor de Verenigde Staten. Nu maar hopen op voortschrijdend inzicht op het gebied van mededogen en duurzaamheid. Als je de uitslagen in de USA zou vergelijken met de Nederlandse situatie valt de uitslag in de USA te duiden als: 'de kiezer heeft bepaald dat Obama en Romney het samen zullen moeten doen'. Immers, naast het presidentschap zijn er wisselende meerderheden in huis van afgevaardigden en senaat. In die zin kunnen we spreken over ‘much ado about nothing’.

Mijn stemvoorkeur ging deze Amerikaanse verkiezingen naar Jill Stein. Zij was de groene kandidaat tijdens de verkiezingen. Haar doel is om het witte huis om te toveren tot een ´groen huis´. Ik wil haar heel erg bedanken voor het brengen van compassie en duurzaamheid in de campagne! Echt super!

Meer aandacht voor duurzaamheid om de klimaatverandering in de USA tegen te gaan is zacht gezegd geen overbodige luxe. Zie hier de wederopbouw na orkaan Sandy.

Afgelopen vrijdag is koningin Beatrix op bezoek geweest in de provincie Noord-Brabant. De koningin heeft daar een gesprek bijgewoond over de intensieve veehouderij in de provincie. Het is goed dat de discussie over de intensieve veehouderij in Brabant wordt gevoerd en dat er tijdens het bezoek van de koningin aandacht werd besteed aan de problematiek.

Het is daarbij wel van belang dat de koningin een volledig beeld heeft gekregen van de problemen die in Brabant spelen en daarom was het belangrijk dat er, naast agrariërs en dorpsbewoners, ook maatschappelijke organisaties en vertegenwoordigers van belangenorganisaties aanwezig waren bij het gesprek. Ik heb dan ook Kamervragen gesteld over de aanwezigen bij het gesprek, omdat de indruk bestaat dat verontruste bewoners en milieuorganisaties vooral via spandoeken moesten communiceren met Hare Majesteit.

PiepVandaag, een internetcommunity van mensen die opkomen voor dier, natuur en milieu, is een handtekeningenactie begonnen tegen de dieronvriendelijke activiteiten van de Belgische kunstenaar Jan Fabre. Deze vermeende ‘kunstenaar’ gooide katten de lucht in die vervolgens op een trap terecht kwamen voor het opnemen van film in het kader van een kunstproject. Een deel van de katten kwam niet op hun pootjes terecht en het krijsen van de katten gaat door merg en been. Ongelofelijk dat iemand dit kan doen met levende wezens met bewustzijn en gevoel! Eerder beplakte Fabre het plafond van het koninklijk Paleis in België met 1,5 miljoen schildjes van Thaise juweelkevers. Mooi voorbeeld van hoe het eraan toegaat in de bankensector: A Loo With A View. Hoe bankiers in Frankfurt letterlijk neerkijken op het gepeupel dat ze rijk maakte.

It is great news that Barack Obama was re-elected. His re-election means a better future for the United States. But now let’s hope for real progress in the areas of tolerance and sustainability. If you compare the results in the USA with the situation in the Netherlands, the outcome in the USA can be described thus: “the voter has decided that Obama and Romney will have to work together”. After all, in addition to the presidency, there are changing majorities in the house of representatives and the senate. From that perspective, we can say it’s all “much ado about nothing”.

My favourite candidate in these American elections was Jill Stein, the green candidate. Her aim is to transform the white house in a “green house”. I would like to thank her for bringing compassion and sustainability to the campaign! Excellent!

Last Friday, Queen Beatrix visited the province of North Brabant, where she attended a discussion on intensive factory farming in the province. We welcome the fact that the issue of factory farming in Brabant is being discussed and the presence of the queen meant the issue got more attention.

However, it is important that the queen get a full and balanced impression of the problems in Brabant. Consequently, it is vital that, in addition to farmers and local people, also social organizations and representatives from interest groups are present during the discussion. I have submitted parliamentary questions regarding the parties invited to participate in the discussion as there is the feeling that worried residents and environmental organizations mostly have to resort of demonstrations to get the attention of Her Majesty.

PiepVandaag, an internet community of people concerned about animals, nature and the environment, has started a petition against the animal-unfriendly activities of Belgian artist Jan Fabre. This so-called “artist” filmed cats being thrown up into the air to land on some stairs for an art project. Some of the cats did not land on their feet and the crying was chilling. Unbelievable that someone could do this to living creatures that are aware and feel! Previously, Fabre covered the ceiling of the royal palace in Belgium with 1.5 million shells from Thai jewel beetles. Sign the (Dutch) petition at http://www.piepvandaag.nl/petitie-stop-jan-fabre/ .
