Worldlog Week 02 – 2011

Het is al weer een paar weken geleden, maar ik wens je nog een Gelukkig Nieuwjaar. De Partij voor de Dieren gaat in 2011 opnieuw tegen de stroom van het kortetermijn mensendenken in roeien en over mensen uitdagen om over hun eigen schaduw heen te springen. Het begin van dit jaar staat in het teken van Provinciale Statenverkiezingen op 2 maart en Eerste Kamerverkiezingen op 23 mei. Tijdens de Provinciale Statenverkiezingen doen we in ieder geval in tien provincies mee. Op dit moment zijn we in acht provincies vertegenwoordigd en hebben we al successen geboekt wat betreft een verbod op megastallen, een verduurzaming van de landbouw en het terugdringen van het bestrijden van muskusratten. Samen met de tien lijsttrekkers gaan we de aankomende maanden knallen om een prachtig resultaat neer te zetten voor dieren, natuur en milieu.

Daarnaast is Niko Koffeman opnieuw beschikbaar om vier jaar als Senator onze partij in de Eerste Kamer te vertegenwoordigen. Niko stond aan de wieg van de Partij voor de Dieren en ik vind dat hij in de Senaat op uitzonderlijke wijze invulling heeft gegeven aan de rol van onze partij. Door zijn inzet zijn de thema’s dierenwelzijn, duurzaamheid, klimaatcrisis en vleesconsumptie aan bod gekomen in en buiten de Eerste Kamer. Niko kreeg bijvoorbeeld steun voor voorstellen om te komen tot een transitie naar een meer plantaardige eiwitproductie, voor een duurzaamheidstoetsing van alle belastingmaatregelen en voor nakoming van de gemaakte afspraken met betrekking tot de Ecologische Hoofdstructuur.

Het dioxineschandaal in Duitsland, waarbij te hoge concentraties dioxine in veevoer zijn aangetroffen, heeft ook Nederland wakker geschud. Ik heb vorige week Kamervragen gesteld om opheldering te krijgen over de met dioxine besmette eieren die vanuit Duitsland ook op de Nederlandse markt gekomen zijn. Daarnaast hebben we een belangrijk debat gehad over de bestrijding van Q-koorts. In Nederland weigerde het kabinet de adressen van besmette bedrijven vrij te geven zelfs toen bleek dat 4000 mensen ziek geworden waren en 15 mensen overleden. De houders van schapen en geiten die gedood werden, werden allemaal gecompenseerd voor de geleden schade, maar de mensen die chronisch ziek werden of een dierbare verloren aan de ziekte bleven volledig in de kou staan, zoals in elke situatie waar zoönosen de volksgezondheid bedreigen. Ik heb het kabinet ‘dood door schuld’ verweten wat door de minister als ‘onfatsoenlijk en buitenproportioneel betiteld werd. Die kwalificaties zijn bij uitstek van toepassing op het kabinetsbeleid wat mij betreft.

Een leuk nieuwtje, Brian May, gitarist van de legendarische rockgroep Queen, heeft in Groot-Brittannië mensen opgeroepen niet op de Conservatives te stemmen vanwege dierenwelzijn. Hij lijkt onze partij volledig te hebben begrepen. In een interview bij de BBC vertelt hij over zijn actiegroep ‘Save me’, die hij heeft opgericht om vossen in Groot-Brittannië te beschermen tegen de gruwelijke vossenjacht. Ik wens Brian May veel succes met zijn strijd voor dierenrechten in Engeland!

In de week van 24 tot en met 30 januari is het ‘The world week for the Abolition of Meat’. Dit zeer goede initiatief was de afgelopen jaren een groot succes. Volgende week worden over de hele wereld acties opgezet om mensen te laten zien wat vlees eten uit de intensieve veehouderij voor consequenties heeft voor dierenwelzijn, klimaat en milieu. De organisatie roept iedereen op om mee te doen en de wereld te laten zien dat het eten van vlees drastisch verminderd moet worden. En ik steun dat pleidooi van harte!

Although the new year is a couple of weeks old now, I would still like to wish you all a Happy New Year. Again in 2011, the Party for the Animals will be battling against the current of short-term thinking and challenge people to change the their mentality. The first half of this year brings us the Provincial Council elections on 2 March and the Upper House elections on 23 May. We will in any case be fielding candidates in eight provinces during the Provincial Council elections. We are currently represented in eight provinces and have scored successes with a ban on mega-stables, increased sustainability of agriculture and the limiting of the culling of muskrats. Together with the ten electoral party leaders, we will be fighting over the next few months to win a victory for animals, nature and the environment.

Furthermore, Niko Koffeman is will again be running in the Senate race to represent our party for another four years. Niko has been involved with the Party for the Animals from its inception and he has shaped the role of our party in the Senate in an exceptional manner. Through his efforts, issues such as animal welfare, sustainability, the climate crisis and meat consumption have been discussed both within the Upper House and beyond. For example, Niko obtained support for proposals to start increasing vegetable-based protein production, to implement a sustainability test for all tax measures and to honour the agreement made regarding the National Ecological Network.

The dioxin scandal in Germany, where high concentrations of dioxins were discovered in cattle feed, has also sent alarm bells ringing in the Netherlands. Last week I requested that the Lower House provide clarification regarding dioxin-infected eggs from Germany that also entered the Dutch market. Furthermore, we had an important debate on battling Q fever. The Dutch government refused to release the addresses of contaminated farms even when it became apparent that 4,000 people had fallen ill and 15 had died. The owners of sheep and goats that had died were all compensated for their losses while those that fell chronically ill or lost loved ones were completely left out in the cold, as is always the case where zoonoses threaten public health. I have accused the government of “criminally negligent homicide”, which was described by the minister as “indecent” and “disproportionate”. As far as I am concerned, qualifications like those are ideally suited to the government.

Some cool news: Brian May, guitarist of the legendary rock group Queen, has appealed to people in Great Britain not to vote for the Conservatives owing to concerns about animal welfare. We seems to understand our party completely. In an interview with the BBC he talks about his action group “Save me” that he set up to protect foxes in Great Britain against the cruel fox hunt. I wish Brian May much success in his fight for animal rights in Great Britain!

In the week 24 through to 30 January, it is ‘The world week for the Abolition of Meat’. This highly commendable initiative has been a huge success in recent years. Next week will see activities take place all over the world to show people that consuming meat from the intensive cattle-raising industry has consequences for animal welfare, the climate and the environment. The organization calls on everyone to participate and to show the world that meat consumption must be drastically reduced. This is an appeal to which I give my wholehearted support!
