Eu tenho uma boa notícia para começar! Graças a uma resolução do nosso Partido pode, por enquanto, para não furar para o gás e em torno do Mar do Norte na ilha holandesa de Terschelling. A maioria da Câmara votou para a nossa moção. Terschelling está localizada na área do Mar de Wadden. Esta é a única parte de natureza que está atualmente insuficientemente protegida contra a atividade maliciosa, como a perfuração de gás e sal. Estou muito satisfeita que a nossa moção será adotada, e nós continuamos a lutar para que no futuro não venham novas perfurações de gás ao redor do Mar de Wadden.

Em meu Worldlog de duas semanas atras eu falei sobre a fraude com a carne de peru foi constatada em uma série de açougues na Holanda. A Autoridade de Segurança Alimentar holandesa lançou agora uma investigação ampla para examinar se açougueiros vendem carne de peru estruturalmente barata como cordeiro.

Na semana passada eu já falei sobre o fluxo de refugiados de pessoas de países como a Síria devido à guerra civil que está ocorrendo por lá. Eu me mantenho dentro, mas também fora da Camara salientando que é importante colocar estas questões numa perspectiva mais ampla. Não devemos só olhar para soluções a curto prazo, mas também o terreno fértil para esses problemas. Por exemplo, o problema dos refugiados também está ligado ao fato de que nós consumimos mais do que a terra pode nos dar: a escassez de alimentos, a seca e a desflorestação. Todos os problemas que causam conflitos, as guerras e os fluxos de refugiados. Por exemplo, de acordo com esta pesquisa. Eu acho que já é hora dos políticos finalmente levarem a sério estes problemas!

Um relatório do Fundo Mundial para a Natureza (WWF) mostram que se não houver nenhuma ação cerca de 170 milhões de hectares de florestas serão perdidos até 2030. 170 milhões de hectares é tão grande quanto o tamanho da Alemanha, França, Espanha e Portugal juntos. O desmatamento terá lugar em 11 regiões, dos quais 10 estão localizados nos trópicos. WWF diz que a principal causa do desmatamento é a crescente agricultura, incluindo a criação de animais. Estudos recentes mostraram que a Europa é um dos maiores importadores de produtos que podem estar ligados ao desmatamento. Mudanças em larga escala na pecuária e nossos hábitos de consumo também são necessários!

Me deparei com este pedaço no New York Times e gostaria de compartilhar com vocês. Trata-se de escravidão moderna no sector das pescas. O peixe e marisco em nossos pratos são muitas vezes provar ter sido capturado por trabalhadores altamente explorados. O The Guardian já faz pesquisa sobre isto aqui há um ano.

I have some good news to start with! Thanks to our motion gas drilling on and around the Dutch Wadden Island of Terschelling is prohibited for the time being. A majority of the Lower House voted in favour of our motion. Terschelling is situated in the Wadden Area. It is a unique nature reserve that is currently insufficiently protected against damaging activities such as gas drilling and salt mining. I am delighted that our motion was granted and we will continue to fight for no more new gas drilling around the Wadden Area.

In my Worldlog of twee weeks ago, I told you about the fraud with turkey meat that was discovered at a few butcher’s in the Netherlands. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has started an extensive investigation to find out whether butchers sell cheap turkey meat for lambs meat on a structural basis.

Last week, I also discussed the flow of refugees from Syria among other countries as a result of civil war. I continue to point out – both inside and outside the Lower House – that it is crucial to see those problems in a bigger perspective. We should not only look at short-term solutions but more particularly at the source of these problems. The refugee issue is, for example, connected with the fact that we consume more than the earth manages to provide: food scarcity, drought, deforestation. They are all problems that cause conflicts, wars and flows of refugees. This is, for example, evident from this study. It is high time that politicians start to take these problems seriously.

A report of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) showed that approx. 170 million hectares of forest will be lost by 2030 if no action is taken. 170 million hectares is an area as large as Germany, France, Spain and Portugal together. This deforestation will take place in 11 areas, of which 10 are in the tropics. The WWF says that the main cause of deforestation is the growing farming industry, including the livestock industry. Recent studies showed that Europe is one of the largest importers of products that can be linked to deforestation. It is crucial that we make large-scale changes in livestock farming and in our consumption behaviour!

I came across this article in the New York Times, which I would really like to share with you. It is about modern slavery in the fishing industry. Fish and sea shells often appear to have been caught by badly exploited workers. The Guardian also already investigated this one year ago.
