A formação do gabinete já dura 120 dias e a composição dos partidos presentes à mesa de negociações não promete muita coisa boa para o planeta. É pena, pois esta seria a oportunidade por excelência para realmente fazer a diferença para o futuro dos animais, pessoas, natureza e meio-ambiente. Nós gostaríamos de um gabinete verde capaz de concluir um forte acordo climático. Assuntos que despertam diferenças de opinião essenciais podem se tornar questões livres e então, com maiorias variáveis na Câmara Baixa podemos não obstante chegar a uma política boa e sustentável. Desta maneira optariamos deveras pelo interesse transcendente.

De novo tivemos êxito no Parlamento holandês. Nossa moção para aprimorar o protocolo sobre calor para transportes de animais foi aceita na semana passada. O protocolo sobre calor para transportes de animais é destinado a evitar grave sofrimento nos veículos de transporte. Porém, esta prescrição só entra em vigor após quatro subsequentes dias com temperaturas acima de 27ºC. E existem diversas cláusulas de excepção e por isso, na prática os animais frequentemente ainda sofrem de estresse térmico. O Partido para os Animais quer acabar com os infames transportes de gado e a moção aceita vai garantir de qualquer maneira que os animais realmente não sejam transportados em dias abrasadores.

Nossa euro-deputada Anja Hazekamp pôs a caça norueguesa de baleias na agenda europeia. Numa reunião do Parlamento Europeu na semana passada Anja propôs fechar os portos europeus para o trânsito da carne de baleia. Cada ano milhares de quilos de carne de baleia são transportados da Noruega ao Japão através de portos europeus. Apesar da venda da carne de baleia ser proibida na Europa, o trânsito através de portos na UE é coniventemente permitido. O Parlamento Europeu votará em setembro sobre a proposta do Partido para os Animais.

Na semana passada tive uma visita muito agradável de Tamasin Ramsay da Animal Justice Party, nosso partido irmão da Austrália. Eles têm uma cadeira no Senado de New South Wales e agora estão lutando pela proibição de transportes de animais na Austrália, o que seria um passo revolucionário. Tamasin nos pediu conselhos sobre a melhor maneira de agir.

Também é maravilhoso ver como nosso partido irmão na Espanha, PACMA, trabalha duro para humanos, animais e planeta. Assim, eles chamaram a atenção para o festival de San Fermín que começou na semana passada. Na cidade espanhola de Pamplona, durante nove dias seguidos, touros são lançados a correr nas ruas estreitas para depois serem forçados a entrar na arena onde todos serão mortos de maneira horrível. Antes das correrias os touros são atormentados com atiçadores eléctricos e paus agudos. Em setembro PACMA organizará uma manifestação em massa contra tais crueldades para com animais em Madri. Aqui podem ver as belas imagens da manifestação do ano passado.

No final de junho, centenas de milhares de pessoas do mundo inteiro andaram na parada para os direitos dos LGBTI chamada World Pride em Madri. Certamente havia um milhão de pessoas. Também nosso partido irmão espanhol PACMA tomou parte. PACMA enfatiza a importância de eventos contra a discriminação e a favor do orgulho LGBTI dizendo: “Devemos lutar por um mundo melhor para todos os habitantes do planeta seja qual for a espécie, a raça, o sexo ou a identidade.” Aqui na Holanda concordamos plenamente com isto! Razão pela qual nosso partido vai de novo tomar parte do Gay Pride em Amsterdam em agosto. Nos veremos lá?

Apesar das férias de verão nosso partido irmão português PAN não terá muito descanso pois no dia 1º de outubro haverão eleições locais em 308 municípios no Portugal. Desejamos aos nossos colegas muito sucesso nas preparações!

The Dutch government formation has taken 120 days already and the composition of the parties at the negotiating table promises very little for the planet. That’s a shame because we now have the opportunity to make a real difference for the future of animals, humans, nature and the environment. We would like to see a green government that is able to conclude a strong climate agreement. Subjects we substantially disagree on can be considered as free issues, which means that we could still come to a good, sustainable policy with changing majorities. That way we can really go for the overarching interest.

We were successful again in the Dutch parliament. Our motion to extend the heat protocol for animal transports was passed last week. The heat protocol for animal transports intends to prevent the serious suffering of animals in transport trailers. However, this regulation only comes into effect when it has been above 27˚C (80.6 F) for four days in a row. And there are all kinds of exceptional provisions that cause animals to still frequently suffer heat stress in practice. The Party for the Animals wants to end the inhumane treatment of livestock during transports and the motion adopted will in any case ensure that animals will no longer be put on transport in steamy hot trailers.

Our MEP Anja Hazekamp has put Norwegian whale hunting on the European agenda. At a meeting of the European Parliament last week, Anja proposed to close European ports for the transit of whale meat. Each year, thousands of kilos of whale meat are transported via European ports from Norway to Japan. Although it is prohibited to sell whale meat in the European Union, the transit of it via EU ports is turned a blind eye to. The European Parliament will vote on the Party for the Animals’ proposal in September.

Last week, I received a pleasant visit from Tamasin Ramsay of the Animal Justice Party, our sister party in Australia. They have a seat in the Senate of New South Wales and are now fighting for a ban on animal transports in Australia, which would be a revolutionary step forward. Tamasin asked us for advice on how to best proceed on this.

It is also fantastic to see how our Spanish sister party PACMA is working hard for humans, animals and the planet. For example, they are asking for attention for the San Fermín Festival that started last week. In the Spanish city of Pamplona bulls are released in the small streets, during the nine-day festival, after which they are chased into the arena where they finally suffer a gruesome death. Prior to the bull run, the bulls are tortured with electric shocks and poked with sharp sticks. PACMA is organising a mass protest in Madrid in September against such forms of animal abuse. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world marched for LHBTI+ rights, the World Pride in Madrid at the end of June. There were at least one million people. Our Spanish sister party PACMA also took part in it. PACMA emphasises the importance of non-discrimination and pride events. PACMA: “We must fight for a better world for all inhabitants of the planet, no matter what species, race, gender or identity. We totally agree with this in the Netherlands. For that reason, our party will again participate in the Amsterdam Gay Pride. Will we see you there?

Summer is starting but our Portuguese sister party PAN will not be able to take a rest. On 1 October, local elections will be held in Portugal: elections are on in 308 Portuguese municipalities. I wish our colleagues good luck with all preparations!
