La formación del nuevo gabinete de gobierno dura ya 120 días y la composición de partidos en la mesa de negociación no promete nada bueno para el planeta. Una lástima, porque ahora tenemos la oportunidad de marcar la diferencia para el futuro de animales, seres humanos, naturaleza y medioambiente. Nos gustaría ver un gabinete verde capaz de cerrar un acuerdo climático sólido. Los puntos sobre los que las opiniones difieran considerablemente se podrían considerar temas libres, de forma que podamos poner en práctica una buena política sostenible con mayorías cambiantes en el parlamento. De esa forma daríamos preferencia al interés general.

Hemos conseguido un nuevo éxito en el parlamento holandés. Nuestra moción para endurecer el protocolo contra el calor en el transporte animal fue aprobada la semana pasada. El objetivo de este protocolo es evitar el sufrimiento innecesario de los animales en los camiones de transporte. Sin embargo, solo entra en vigor tras cuatro días seguidos con temperaturas superiores a los 27 ˚C y hay todo tipo de excepciones, por lo que, en la práctica, los animales siguen sufriendo mucho por el calor. El Partido por los Animales quiere poner fin al transporte de ganado en condiciones deplorables y gracias a la moción adoptada, de momento hemos conseguido que los animales no vuelvan a subir a camiones con calor excesivo.

Nuestra europarlamentaria Anja Hazekamp ha puesto en la agenda europea la caza de ballenas en Noruega. En una sesión del Parlamento Europeo de la semana pasada, Anja propuso cerrar los puertos europeos al tránsito de carne de ballena. Todos los años, miles de kilos de carne de ballena pasa por los puertos europeos en su trayecto de Noruega a Japón. La venta de carne de ballena está prohibida en la Unión Europea, pero el tránsito por puertos europeos se tolera silenciosamente. La propuesta del Partido por los Animales se votará en septiembre en el Parlamento Europeo.
La semana pasada recibí la grata visita de Tamasin Ramsay, del Animal Justice Party, nuestro partido hermano en Australia, que tiene un escaño en el senado de New South Wales y está luchando por la prohibición del transporte de animales en Australia, lo cual supondría un paso revolucionario. Tamasin nos ha pedido consejos sobre la mejor forma de trabajar para alcanzar ese objetivo.

También es fantástico ver cómo trabaja nuestro partido hermano en España, el PACMA, en beneficio del ser humano, los animales y el planeta. Ahora están pidiendo atención para las fiestas de San Fermín, que dieron comienzo la semana pasada. Durante nueve días sueltan toros por las estrechas calles de Pamplona, al final de las cuales les espera una muerte terrible en el ruedo. Antes de los encierros atormentan a los toros con descargas eléctricas y afilados punzones. En septiembre, el PACMA organiza en Madrid una manifestación masiva contra estas formas de maltrato animal. Aquí puedes ver las imágenes de la fabulosa manifestación del año pasado.

Cientos de miles de personas de todo el mundo salieron a la calle en Madrid a finales de junio en una marcha en defensa de los derechos del colectivo LGTBIQ, el World Pride. En total participaron al menos un millón de personas, incluyendo miembros y simpatizantes de nuestro partido hermano en España, el PACMA, que subrayó la importancia de la lucha contra la discriminación y los eventos de orgullo identitario. PACMA: “Tenemos que luchar por un mundo mejor para todos los habitantes del planeta, independientemente del tipo, raza, sexo o identidad”. ¡En Holanda no podíamos estar más de acuerdo! Por eso, en agosto, nuestro partido volverá a participar en el Amsterdam Gay Pride. ¿Nos vemos allí?

El verano ya está aquí, pero nuestro partido hermano portugués, el PAN, no tendrá mucho tiempo para descansar, porque el 1 de octubre hay elecciones locales en 308 municipios de Portugal. ¡Mucho ánimo a nuestros compañeros portugueses con los preparativos!

The Dutch government formation has taken 120 days already and the composition of the parties at the negotiating table promises very little for the planet. That’s a shame because we now have the opportunity to make a real difference for the future of animals, humans, nature and the environment. We would like to see a green government that is able to conclude a strong climate agreement. Subjects we substantially disagree on can be considered as free issues, which means that we could still come to a good, sustainable policy with changing majorities. That way we can really go for the overarching interest.

We were successful again in the Dutch parliament. Our motion to extend the heat protocol for animal transports was passed last week. The heat protocol for animal transports intends to prevent the serious suffering of animals in transport trailers. However, this regulation only comes into effect when it has been above 27˚C (80.6 F) for four days in a row. And there are all kinds of exceptional provisions that cause animals to still frequently suffer heat stress in practice. The Party for the Animals wants to end the inhumane treatment of livestock during transports and the motion adopted will in any case ensure that animals will no longer be put on transport in steamy hot trailers.

Our MEP Anja Hazekamp has put Norwegian whale hunting on the European agenda. At a meeting of the European Parliament last week, Anja proposed to close European ports for the transit of whale meat. Each year, thousands of kilos of whale meat are transported via European ports from Norway to Japan. Although it is prohibited to sell whale meat in the European Union, the transit of it via EU ports is turned a blind eye to. The European Parliament will vote on the Party for the Animals’ proposal in September.
Last week, I received a pleasant visit from Tamasin Ramsay of the Animal Justice Party, our sister party in Australia. They have a seat in the Senate of New South Wales and are now fighting for a ban on animal transports in Australia, which would be a revolutionary step forward. Tamasin asked us for advice on how to best proceed on this.

It is also fantastic to see how our Spanish sister party PACMA is working hard for humans, animals and the planet. For example, they are asking for attention for the San Fermín Festival that started last week. In the Spanish city of Pamplona bulls are released in the small streets, during the nine-day festival, after which they are chased into the arena where they finally suffer a gruesome death. Prior to the bull run, the bulls are tortured with electric shocks and poked with sharp sticks. PACMA is organising a mass protest in Madrid in September against such forms of animal abuse. Hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world marched for LHBTI+ rights, the World Pride in Madrid at the end of June. There were at least one million people. Our Spanish sister party PACMA also took part in it. PACMA emphasises the importance of non-discrimination and pride events. PACMA: “We must fight for a better world for all inhabitants of the planet, no matter what species, race, gender or identity. We totally agree with this in the Netherlands. For that reason, our party will again participate in the Amsterdam Gay Pride. Will we see you there?

Summer is starting but our Portuguese sister party PAN will not be able to take a rest. On 1 October, local elections will be held in Portugal: elections are on in 308 Portuguese municipalities. I wish our colleagues good luck with all preparations!
