A vaca Hermien que escapou do matadouro e sua amiga pela primeira vez muito felizes no prado.

The cow Hermien and her mate Zus, who made it to the news, both nationally and internationally, after they had literally just escaped slaughter, were finally allowed out in the meadow again after months in their stable. The animals visibly enjoyed their freedom on the grass at the “De Leemweg” rest home for cows in the Dutch village of Zandhuizen, where they have been staying since February.

The owner of the rest home for cows, Bert Hollander, only let the cows outside last week because the weather and the grass were not optimal before. The grass is now high enough again and the cows can play in the meadow all day long until November.

“Cowfunding”
The story of Hermien and Zus started last December. They, together with other cows, were to be brought to the slaughterhouse. Fifteen cows entered the cattle truck without making any trouble, but Hermien and her mate Zus escaped. Cow Zus was quickly caught again, but Hermien stayed out of the hands of hunters, policemen, vets and farmers for weeks. But they continued trying to catch her.

After their spectacular escape, many Dutch people called for a stay of execution of both animals. Thanks to the “cowfunding plan” of the Dutch Party for the Animals, for which EUR 50,000 was raised, the freedom of both Hermien and Zus could be bought. The cows Zus and Hermien were finally brought to the rest home for cows last February. The rest of the money raised will be used to pay for the life-long care of both cows.

The Party for the Animals’ MP Esther Ouwehand was involved in the rescue operation of the cows from day one, and she was also there when the cows went to the meadow first. “They’re obviously very happy. They jump for joy and it’s great fun to watch them hang around together. Both cows reminded us of an important lesson: no animal wants to be brought to the slaughter. Non-human animals want their freedom too.”

A vaca Hermien e sua amiga Zus, que apareceram nos noticiários nacionais e internacionais por terem escapado à morte, puderam na semana passada, finalmente andar na grama após alguns meses no estábulo. Muito visível era o prazer que os animais tiravam de sua liberdade no prado ao redor da casa de descanso para vacas “De Leemweg” na aldeia holandesa de Zandhuizen, onde elas moram desde fevereiro.

O proprietário da casa de descanso para vacas, Bert Hollander, deixou as vacas saírem só na semana passada porque antes a grama e o clima não eram satisfatórios. Agora a grama está bastante alta e as vacas poderão brincar o dia inteiro no prado todos os dias até novembro.

“Cowfunding”

A história de Hermien e Zus começou dezembro passado. Elas tinham que ir junto com outras vacas para o matadouro. Quinze vacas entraram mansamente no carro de gado mas Hermien e sua amiga Zus fugiram. A vaca Zus foi pegada logo depois, mas Hermien permaneceu durante semanas fora das mãos de caçadores, policiais, veterinários e fazendeiros. Entretanto a caça do animal não parava.

Após a fuga espetacular muitos holandeses pediram adiantamento de execução para ambos os animais. Graças a uma “ação de cowfunding” do Partido para os Animais holandês foram coletados 50.000 euros e assim Hermien e Zus puderam ser resgatadas. E enfim, em fevereiro elas foram levadas para a casa de descanso para vacas. O restante do dinheiro coletado será usado para cuidar de ambas as vacas pelo resto de suas vidas.

A parlamentária Esther Ouwehand do Partido para os Animais esteve desde o primeiro dia envolvida na ação de resgate das vacas e também esteve presente no primeiro dia das vacas no prado: “Elas estão claramente muito felizes. Elas dão pulos de alegria e é muito legal ver que elas passam tempo juntas. Estas vacas nos lembram uma lição muito importante: nenhum animal quer ser abatido. Também os animais não-humanos querem liberdade.”
