Câmara: somente agricultura realmente sustentável é ‘inteligente face ao clima’
Agricultura só pode ser chamada ‘inteligente face ao clima’ se ela contribui ao esverdeamento da produção de alimentos e à segurança alimentar. A Câmara Baixa aceitou uma moção sobre isto da Marianne Thieme. Neste momento o conceito é usado tão frouxamente que pode até incluir mega-estábulos.
A política do governo se coloca na íntegra para uma agricultura inteligente face ao clima (climate-smart agriculture). Neste momento quase todas as formas de agricultura cabem neste conceito incluindo até mega-estábulos. A Câmara Baixa quer agora acabar com esta confusão.
Uma maioria na Câmara votou a favor de uma moção da Marianne Thieme para uma definição perspicaz e clara da agricultura inteligente face ao clima. Daqui por diante só uma agricultura que realmente contribui ao esverdeamento da produção mundial de alimentos e que garante o direito à alimentação pode ser chamada de ‘inteligente face ao clima’
Marianne Thieme: “A agricultura industrial sobrecarrega muito os animais, o meio-ambiente e os direitos humanos. O governo tenta cobrir isto com um ‘molho verde’ ao chamar esta agricultura de ‘inteligente face ao clima’. Agora que a Câmara está frustrando esta prática de maquilhagem verde o governo deverá estimular iniciativas realmente sustentáveis.”
Por causa da moção aceita finalmente o governo deverá realmente anuir ao pedido tanto da Câmara quanto do relator especial das Nações Unidas dedicado ao direito à alimentação e pôr em foco a agricultura em pequena escala e ecológica.
Abuso
Centenas de ONGs entre as quais Cordaid e Friends Of The Earth, já deram o alarme sobre o abuso do termo. Eles advertem que ao rotular a agricultura industrial a torto e a direito como sendo ‘inteligente face ao clima’ as empresas multinacionais podem embolsar dinheiro que deveria ser usado para estimular pequenos agricultores ecológicos.
Only when it truly contributes to the greening of our food production and security should agriculture be called “climate-smart”. The Lower House has passed a motion on this subject introduced by Marianne Thieme. At present, the term is used so casually that it occasionally even includes factory farms.
The government policy will fully engage in climate-smart agriculture. At the moment, this still includes virtually any form of agriculture, even factory farming. The Lower House wants to see an end to this lack of clarity.
A large majority of parliament has supported a motion by Marianne Thieme to adopt a clear and distinct definition of climate-smart agriculture. From now on, only agriculture that truly contributes to the greening of global food production and to ensuring the right to food may be called “climate-smart”.
Marianne Thieme: “Industrial agriculture puts severe pressure on animals, the environment and human rights. By calling this destructive form of agriculture “climate-smart”, the government has tried to give it a green veneer. However, now that the Lower House has foiled these greenwashing practices, the government will be forced to promote initiatives that are truly sustainable.”
The adopted motion will force the government to finally meet the wishes of both Lower House and the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, to concentrate on small-scale organic farming.
Improper use
Hundreds of NGOs including Cordaid and Friends Of The Earth have already sounded the alarm over the improper use of the term. They have warned that by designating industrial farming as “climate-smart”, multinationals will rake in the money that should be intended for encouraging small, agro-ecological farmers.
