Worldlog Settimana 22 – 2015

Purtroppo esistono ancora oggi nei Paesi Bassi dei passatempi crudeli che causano molta sofferenza agli animali. Uno di tali passatempi e’ tenere le cigne. Le cigne vengono cacciate, dopodiche’ viene rimossa una parte delle ali, in modo che non possano volare via. Le cigne vengono poi vendute per bellezza, cosa che porta la possiblita’ di guadagnare delle belle cifre. Il nostro partito chiede da anni per un divieto totale di poter gestire le cigne. Solo dopo una trasmissione televisa sull’argomento, il segretario ha promesso recentemente di proseguire con il divieto totale senza permettere piu’ delle eccezioni. La settimana scorsa e’ venuta dalla Camera una manifestazione contro la gestione delle cigne. Era mirata a richiamare l’attenzione da parte della Camera sull’urgenza di questo divieto. Grazie a tutti quelli che erano presenti durante la manifestazione!

Gia’ dalli anni ottanta vi e’ un accordo internazionale di non cacciare le orche. Alcuni paesi, tra quali l’Islanda, la Norvegia e il Giappone, non rispettano pero’ questo accordo. Molte specie di orche sono a rischio d’estinzione e se continua cosi’ saranno estinti tra non molto tempo. Al momento tengono luogo delle negoziazioni tra l’Europa e il Giappone su un accordo che il Giappone cerca di chiudere con l’Europa. Dal punto di vista del nostro partito ci sembra una buona opportunita’ per mettere il Giappone sotto pressione per quanto riguarda la politica commerciale da parte del Parlamento Europeo. Le negoziazioni commerciali devono essere sospese finche’ il Giappone non smetta di cacciare le orche. Il nostro richiamo per questo approccio ha fortunatamente trovato sostegno dagli altri partiti nel Parlamento Europeo questa settimana.

La lobby da parte delle industrie chimiche e’ riuscita a bloccare e far tardare l’iniziativa della Unione Europea relativa all’utilizzo delle sostanze che disturbano gli equilibri endocrinologici in tante maniere diverse. Questo viene affermato dal gruppo di ricerca e campagna Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO).

La settimana scorsa e’ venuto fuori che la lobby della industria chimica e’ riuscita in tanti modi a bloccare e ritardare delle misure della UE contro l’utilizzo di sostanze che sono squilibranti per gli ormoni. Hanno ad esempio manipolato le evidenze scientifiche a questo scopo. Si tratta di sostanze chimiche che sono possibilmente velenose come ad esempio il veleno agricolturale, le plastiche, i trucchi, i computer, i tappeti e materiali di costruzione. Le sostanze possono disturbare gli ormoni e sono soprattutto pericolose per bambini e donne gravide. Queste sostanze sono associate a cancro, infertilita’, diabete ed obesitas. Il dipartimento dell’ambiente della Commissione Europea sarebbe gravemente bloccato dai collegi di altri dipartimenti che invece si occupano di commercio ed affari. Trovo scandaloso che disegni di legge vengano ritardati di anni in questo modo. La nostra salute dovrebbe essere una priorita’! Per finire ho due consigli per voi su cose da leggere! Per primo questo bellissimo articolo sul valore della nostra natura. Secondo vorrei consigliarvi il libro “Redefining Prosperity”. In questo libro viene descritto come noi sottolineamo come unico partito olandese: la crescita economica su un pianeta con risorse limitate, non e’ una soluzione per uscire da una crisi, ma e’ invece proprio il problema.

In the Netherlands, there are unfortunately still cruel ‘hobbies’ that cause a lot of harm to animals. An example of this is swan drifting. Swan drifting is an extremely cruel procedure whereby swans are first caught in the wild, after which a part of their wings is removed, so the animals can no longer fly away. Swan drifters make a lot of money by subsequently selling the swans as ornamental birds. For many years, our party has pleaded for a total ban on swan drifting. Not until a television broadcast about this, the State Secretary recently promised to withdraw the last exemptions. A protest group came to the Lower House in The Hague last week to campaign against swan drifting. The aim of the campaign was to urge the State Secretary that it is extremely necessary to withdraw the exemptions of the swan drifters that are currently still active. For everyone who participated in this campaign: thank you again!

Since the 1980s already, it was internationally agreed not to hunt whales. A few countries, however, including Iceland, Norway and Japan, are not bothered about this agreement. Many whales are threatened and they will become extinct if this continues. Negotiations between Europe and Japan are currently ongoing with respect to a trade agreement that Japan wants with Europe. To our party, this seems to be a good opportunity to have the European Parliament exert pressure on Japan through commercial policy. The negotiations ought to be stopped as long as Japan does not stop illegal whaling. Our call for this was fortunately also supported by other political groups in the European Parliament this week.

Lobbyists for the chemical industry have managed to block and delay action by the European Union against the use of hormone disrupting substances in many ways. This was said by the research and campaign group Corporate Europe Observatory (CEO).

Last week, it became clear that lobbyists for the chemical industry have managed to block and delay EU measures against the use of hormone disrupting substances in many ways. They did this by, for example, manipulating scientific evidence. This involves possibly toxic chemicals in products such as pesticides, plastics, cosmetics, computers, carpets and building materials. Those substances may be hormone disruptive and are particularly dangerous to children and pregnant women. The substances have therefore been linked to, inter alia, cancer, infertility, diabetes and obesity. Allegedly, the environment department of the European Commission was seriously thwarted by colleagues of departments involved in trade and business. I find it outrageous that this has caused years of delays in legislation already. Our health should come first!
