The Netherlands recognize the effect of climate change on refugee flood

The Lower House wants the cabinet to survey the effects of climate change, trade and tax-politics, and arms supplies on the stability in vulnerable countries and regions. On Thursday a majority of the Parliament supported a resolution about this by Marianne Thieme. It is the first time that the Lower House explicitly calls up to recognize the relation between climatic change and refugee floods, and to present a vision. With this the Partij voor de Dieren wants the cabinet to draw up a cohesive policy to prevent and embank the flood of refugees.

More and more people flee from agressive conflicts due to underlying, profound causes. International experts and organizations demonstrate that climate change, the winning of resources, trade and tax-politics and arms supplies have great impact on the stability in vulnerable regions. During the general political debate on Thursday, a resolution of party chairman Marianne Thieme – requiring the government to survey the effects of climate change, trade and tax-politics and arms supplies on the stability in vulnerable countries and regions – was supported by a majority of the Parliament.

Thieme: “The United Nations expect tens of millions of climate refugees around 2020. It is necessary that the government surveyes the effects of climate change, and our trade and tax-politics on refugee floods. An integral approach to prevent and embank refugee floods is indispensible.

Climate law
Marianne Thieme has also called the cabinet to make a big deal out of the climate law. The historical verdict of the judge in the climate case compels the government to take measures. Substantial climate policy that is legally embedded reinforces climate agreements, because the government commits to the objectives and so the industry is no longer afraid to make risky investments and innovations.

The climate law is an outline law: objectives about reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are established, measures or policy instruments that need to be inserted are not. With this the Lower House obtains an effective instrument to monitor the progress. The resolution of Marianne Thieme, summoning so, did not pass.
