O partido australiano Animal Justice Party (AJP) quer tomar parte das próximas eleições nacionais! Eles querem obter no mínimo 100.000 votos. Seria maravilhoso se um partido para os animais conquistasse uma cadeira no parlamento da Austrália. Os partidos políticos nesse país prestam mínima ou nenhuma atenção às questões envolvendo o bem estar dos animais e é preciso muita luta para a conservação da natureza na Austrália e para um meio ambiente bom. Se bem que entendi da AJP que existem pequenas mudanças no campo político da Austrália como por exemplo o fato de que agora já se fala sobre uma proibição do uso de cobaias animais para a cosmética. Na Europa tal proibição já vigora e esperamos que a Austrália siga em breve.
Se conhece pessoas que vivem no estado New South Wales na Austrália, por favor pede para eles se tornarem membro (de graça) da AJP. Pois com 850 membros em NSW a AJP terá uma chance em participar. Boa sorte AJP!
O simpósio internacional de nossa Animal Policits Foundation está se concretizando cada vez mais. Há uma excelente e impressionante lista de oradores como Tom Reagan, Will Kymlicka e Maneka Gandhi. Para o grupo parlamentar a semana passada foi uma das mais importantes e movimentadas do ano com a análise do orçamento do Ministério dos Assuntos Económicos (que inclui Agricultura). Ocorreram algumas declarações interessantes da Secretária da Agricultura, entre as quais: ‘É um fato que a carne é a parte de nossa alimentação que causa o maior impacto ambiental’ e ‘A mudança do clima vai ter grandes consequências para a Holanda’. Nós bem que podemos fazer algo a respeito!
Segue um pequeno trecho de minha contribuição:
Todos os sinais estavam verdes quando a Secretária entrou em função no início desse ano. As minhas esperanças eram e ainda são grandes. Finalmente veio um membro do Governo sem vínculos com os tradicionais grupos de pressão agrícolas. Mas as minhas esperanças também são grandes porque a Secretária desde jovem mostrou ser uma pioneira com ideais. Portanto a Secretária teve a chance de esverdear a Holanda. Mas o que foi que ela fez? Ela pôs a natureza em liquidação pelo maior lance. E quando o Partido para os Animais mobilizou os cidadãos para resgatar 100.000 metros quadrados de natureza a Secretária só falou desdenhosamente “… que ainda vai provar-se o quanto a manutenção dessa natureza vai custar”. Por agora felizmente ela parou com a liquidação devido aos distúrbios sociais que isso originou. Estou orgulhosa com isso. Fomos nós que organizamos esses distúrbios sociais. Eu prevejo muito mais distúrbios se a Secretária continuar negligenciando as chances verdes.
Infelizmente na semana passada o parlamento espanhol aprovou por lei a declaração das horrorosas touradas como património cultural da Espanha. É incrível que eles querem manter uma ‘tradição’ tão bárbara. No início de junho o nosso grupo parlamentar ainda apoiou uma moção pedindo ao governo para lutar na Europa contra os subsídios das touradas. Nós continuaremos essa luta!
O novo prefeito de Nova York é um verdadeiro advogado dos direitos animais, seus dois filhos ele também cria vegetarianos. Parabéns Bill de Blasio! Tomara que sua política resulte em coisas bonitas.

Com todo o gosto eu quero finalizar com a excelente afirmação de Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, commited citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

The Australian Animal Justice Party (AJP) intends to participate in the next national elections! They are going for at least 100,000 votes. It would be great if a party for the animals could hold one or more seats in Australian parliament. Political parties in Australia pay little or no attention to issues related to animal welfare, and a hard fight must also be put up for nature preservation in Australia as well as a healthy environment. I understand from the AJP that minor changes do occur in Australian politics, for instance, talks are being held about imposing a ban on cosmetics testing on animals. It has already been banned in Europe, so hopefully Australia will follow soon.
If you know anybody who lives in the state of New South Wales in Australia, ask them whether they would like to become a member (for free) of the AJP. With 850 members in NSW, the AJP will have a chance to participate. Go for it, AJP!

Last week, in the parliamentary group of the Lower House, I had one of the most important and busiest weeks of the year when discussing the budget of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs (which also includes Agriculture). The State Secretary of Agriculture made a few interesting statements, such as: ‘It is a fact that meat constitutes the most environmentally harmful component of our diet’ and ‘Climate change will have major consequences for the Netherlands’. We can do something about that!
A small fragment from my contribution reads as follows:
All lights were green when the State Secretary took office at the beginning of this year. My expectations were – and are – high. At last, a state secretary who has no ties with the traditional agricultural lobby. But my expectations are also high because the State Secretary has turned out to be a pioneer with ideals from her youth up. So, the State Secretary had the opportunity to make the Netherlands greener. But what did she do? She sold out nature to the highest bidder. And when the Party for the Animals mobilised citizens to redeem 100,000 square metres of nature, the State Secretary merely scorned “… that it would become clear how costly it is to maintain that piece of nature.” Thankfully, however, she stopped selling out for the time being due to the social unrest it had invoked. I am proud of that. We organised that social unrest. I predict the State Secretary there will be much more unrest if she misses the green opportunities with an empty goal.
Last week, unfortunately, Spanish parliament officially designated the gruesome bullfighting as part of cultural heritage by law. It is unbelievable how they want to keep up such a barbaric ‘tradition’. Early June, our parliamentary group of the Lower House still carried a motion calling the Cabinet to fight against subsidies for bullfighting in Europe. We will continue this fight!
The new mayor of New York is a true animal rights lawyer, he also raises his two children as vegetarians. Congratulations Bill de Blasio! Hopefully, his policy will generate beautiful things.
