No Portugal, o PAN: o Partido pelos Animais e pela Natureza obteve uma cadeira no parlamento de Madeira! E Madeira sendo uma ilha com uma posição autônoma dentro do Portugal é portanto o segundo país no mundo onde um Partido para os Animais obteve uma sede no parlamento. Essa semana enviei minhas felicitações a Madeira.

O Partido para os Animais apresentou novamente uma moção afim de salvar a orca 'Holandêsa' Morgan de uma vida no parque de animais Loro Parque no Tenerife. Faz um ano que a orca Morgan foi achada enfraquecida e por isso foi retirada do mar Wadden pelo Golfinário que se dispôs a tratar do animal. Nós queremos que Morgan seja posta de volta na natureza, assim que a jovem orca fêmea tenha a chance de retornar para sua família ou de juntar-se a algum outro grupo. O bem-estar de orcas em parques de divertimento é um ponto muito controverso. Cientistas chamam a atenção para o fato de que orcas em cativeiro sofrem muita tensão e por isso demonstram um comportamento agressivo. No Loro Parque já houveram diversos incidentes onde tratadores foram atacados por orcas.

Cientistas independentes internacionais delinearam um plano juntamente com a Coalizão para Orcas (um grupo Holandês de organizações para protecção dos animais) para reintrodução em fases da orca na natureza . Peritos na matéria já encontraram uma família de orcas na Noruega cujos sons de vozes coincidem com a voz de Morgan.

Infelizmente o secretário de estado Bleker de Agricultura pensa que condenar a orca Morgan ao cativeiro num parque de divertimentos para o resto de sua vida é a melhor perspectiva que êle pode oferecer ao animal. Tal é o argumento que êle apresenta para de novo autorizar o Golfinário a transportar orca Morgan ao Loro Parque. Êle já fez isso antes esse ano mas nessa ocasião o julgamento do juiz foi que Bleker não pesquizou suficientemente o regresso de Morgan ao mar. Se bem que Bleker indica não gostar da idéia de manter orcas em piscinas ele opta pelo cativeiro e não pela possibilidade de uma vida livre para o animal. Esperamos que nossa moção vai mudar isso.

Tivemos más novas da Ucrânia essa semana. Segundo o Animal Foundation Platform Holandês cães e gatos vadios na Ucrânia são jogados num crematório móvel, às vezes até enquanto ainda estão vivos. O Partido para os Animais imediatamente pediu ao ministro Schippers de Saúde Pública, Bem-estar e Esporte para informar-se junto ao embaixador da Ucrânia se tais métodos de matança realmente são praticados. E se for o caso, pedimos para entrar em contato com o ministério na Ucrânia para evitar essa maneira terrível de matar animais. Os animais vagabundos são mortos no período inicial do Campeonato Europeu de futebol em 2012 na Ucrânia e na Polónia. Eles são considerados causadores de incómodos e por isso são retirados das ruas de maneira violenta. Regularmente são feitas 'acções de limpeza' durante acontecimentos desportivos, como por exemplo na Grécia em 2004, quando o governo quiz lustrar o aspecto das ruas na ocasião dos Jogos Olímpicos.

O Partido para os Animais questiona frequentemente a matança de animais vadios. Assim fizemos perguntas parlamentares em junho sobre animais vadios na Roménia que lá eram matados barbaramente. Nessa ocasião pedimos ao secretário de estado Bleker para resolver essa questão com seu colega romeno. Infelizmente ele não se dispôs a fazer isto. Continuaremos a empenhar-nos por uma política de bem-estar de animais justa, não só na Holanda mas também na Europa.

In Portugal, the PAN or Partidos pelos Animais e pela Natureza, which means 'Party for the Animals and for Nature', have won a seat in Madeiran government! Madeira, an island with an autonomous position within Portugal, is now the second country in the world where a Party for the Animals has won seat in parliament. I send my congratulations to Madeira earlier this week.

The Party for the Animals has once again tabled a motion to save ‘Dutch’ orca Morgan from a life in Loro Parque animal park on Tenerife. The Dolfinarium fished the orca Morgan out of the Waddenzee a year ago in a weakened condition to care for her. We want her to be returned to nature, so this young female orca has the opportunity to return to her family or to attach to a different group. Orca welfare in amusement parks is highly controversial. Scientists have indicated that orca in captivity experience a great deal of stress, so they then go on to display aggressive behaviour. The Loro Parque have had various incidences where orcas have attacked their trainers.

International, independent scientists in collaboration with the Orca Coalition – a Dutch group of animal protection organisations – have put together a step-by-step plan of attack to get orca back to nature. Experts have found a family of orcas near Norway whose voices correspond with Morgan's.

Unfortunately, State Secretary and Minister of Agriculture Bleker thinks that locking the Morgan the orca away in an attraction park for the rest of her life is the best prospect this animal has. He uses this as the argument behind re-granting the Dolfinarium a licence so they can transport Morgan to the Loro Parque animal park. The State Secretary did exactly that earlier this year too, but the judge decreed that Bleker had not sufficiently researched the option of returning Morgan to the sea. Although Bleker has said he doesn't like the idea of orcas being kept in pools, he still chooses to keep the animal locked up over the chance of being successfully released. Hopefully our motion will change all that.

Bad news from the Ukraine this week. According to the Dutch Animal Foundation Platform, stray dogs and cats in the Ukraine were thrown in a mobile crematorium, sometimes even when they were still alive. The Party for the Animals immediately asked Minister Schippers of Public Health Welfare and Sport if he could ask the Ukraine ambassador whether these killing methods were actually applied. And if they were, whether Minister Schippers will contact the Ukrainian ministry to prevent this terrible way of killing animals from ever happening again. These strays were killed in the run-up to the European Championship Football in 2012 in the Ukraine and Poland. They were regarded as a nuisance and therefore removed from the streets in this brutal manner. Large-scale 'clean-up actions' often take place during sports events, like in Greece, 2004 when the government wanted to clean up Athens’s image for the Olympic Games.

The Party for the Animals regularly raises the issue of culling stray animals. In June we asked parliamentary questions about strays in Romania, that were killed in a barbaric fashion. At the time we asked State Secretary Bleker if would speak to his Romanian colleague on this matter. Unfortunately he proved unwilling to do so. We will continue to work for equitable animal welfare policy, not only in the Netherlands, but in Europe too.
