Au Portugal PAN (Partido pelos Animais e pela Natureza), ce qui veut dire Parti pour les Animaux et la Nature, a obtenu un siège au parlement de Madera ! Madera, une île avec une position autonome au Portugal est donc le deuxième pays au monde où un Parti pour les Animaux a remporté un siège au parlement. Cette semaine j’ai envoyé mes félicitations en direction de Madera.

Le Parti pour les Animaux a de nouveau déposé une motion pour sauver l’orque “Néerlandais” Morgan d’une vie dans le zoo Loro Parque en Tenerife. L’année dernière l’orque Morgan a été trouvé dans la mer des Wadden par des employés du Delphinarium. Ils ont emmené l’animal sévèrement affaibli pour le soigner dans le Delphinarium. Nous voulons que Morgan soit replacé dans la nature, pour que cette jeune orque femelle ait une chance de retrouver sa famille ou de se joindre à un autre groupe. Le bien-être des orques dans les parques récréatifs est très controversé. Les scientifistes ont indiqué que les orques en captivité souffrent de beaucoup de stress qui cause un comportement aggressif. Dans Loro Parque il y a eu quelques incidents dans lesquels des entraîneurs ont été attaqués par les orques.

Des scientifistes internationaux indépendants ont ébauché un projet avec la Coalition d’Orques, un groupe néerlandais des organisations pour la protection des animaux, pour remettre l’orque dans la nature en plusieurs phases. Des experts ont déjà trouvé une famille d’orques en Norvège et leur son de la voix correspond à celui de Morgan.

Malheureusement le secrétaire d’état de l’Agriculture Bleker pense que l’enfermement à vie dans un parc récréatif est la meilleure perspective qu’il puisse offrir à Morgan. C’est ce qu’il prétexte comme motivation pour accorder de nouveau une permission au Delphinarium pour transporter Morgan au zoo Loro Parque. Plus tôt cette année le secrétaire a fait exactement la même chose, mais le juge avait conclu que Bleker n’avait pas suffisamment étudié le retour à la mer de Morgan. Bien que Bleker indique qu’il n’aime pas que les orques vivent dans les bassins, il préfère une vie en captivité pour l’animal à la chance d’un relâchement fructueux. J’espère que notre motion opérera un changement.

Mauvaise nouvelle de l’Ukraine cette semaine. Selon le plateforme néerlandais « Animal Foundation » (une fondation pour animaux) les chiens et les chats errants en Ukraine sont jetés dans les crematoires mobiles, parfois même quand ils sont encore en vie. Le Parti pour les Animaux a tout de suite demandé à la ministre de la Santé, du Bien-être et du Sport Mme Schippers si elle pourrait vérifier auprès de l’ambassadeur de l’Ukraine si ces méthodes d’égorgement sont vraiment pratiquées. Et si oui, si la ministre Schippers pourrait contacter le ministère en Ukraine pour faire obstacle à cette manière cruelle de tuer les animaux. Les animaux errants sont tués à cause du Championnat de l’Europe du football qui aura lieu en Ukraine et en Pologne en 2012. On les voit comme responsables de l’embarras et pour cette raison ils sont chassés brutalement des rues. Régulièrement il y a de grands “nettoyages” pendant des événements de sport, comme en Grèce en 2004, quand le gouvernement a voulu embellir l’aspect de la rue à l’occasion des Jeux Olympiques.

Le Parti pour les Animaux met régulièrement sur le tapis la mise à mort des animaux errants. Ce n’est qu’au mois de juin que nous avons posé des questions à l’Assemblée nationale néerlandaise concernant les animaux errants en Roumanie, qui y étaient tués d’une manière barbare. Nous avions demandé au secrétaire Bleker s’il voulait adresser la parole à son collègue Roumain en ce qui concerne cette question. Malheureusement, il n’y était pas prêt. Nous continuons à nous employer pour une politique juste du bien-être des animaux, non pas seulement aux Pays-Bas, mais aussi en Europe.

In Portugal, the PAN or Partidos pelos Animais e pela Natureza, which means 'Party for the Animals and for Nature', have won a seat in Madeiran government! Madeira, an island with an autonomous position within Portugal, is now the second country in the world where a Party for the Animals has won seat in parliament. I send my congratulations to Madeira earlier this week.

The Party for the Animals has once again tabled a motion to save ‘Dutch’ orca Morgan from a life in Loro Parque animal park on Tenerife. The Dolfinarium fished the orca Morgan out of the Waddenzee a year ago in a weakened condition to care for her. We want her to be returned to nature, so this young female orca has the opportunity to return to her family or to attach to a different group. Orca welfare in amusement parks is highly controversial. Scientists have indicated that orca in captivity experience a great deal of stress, so they then go on to display aggressive behaviour. The Loro Parque have had various incidences where orcas have attacked their trainers.

International, independent scientists in collaboration with the Orca Coalition – a Dutch group of animal protection organisations – have put together a step-by-step plan of attack to get orca back to nature. Experts have found a family of orcas near Norway whose voices correspond with Morgan's.

Unfortunately, State Secretary and Minister of Agriculture Bleker thinks that locking the Morgan the orca away in an attraction park for the rest of her life is the best prospect this animal has. He uses this as the argument behind re-granting the Dolfinarium a licence so they can transport Morgan to the Loro Parque animal park. The State Secretary did exactly that earlier this year too, but the judge decreed that Bleker had not sufficiently researched the option of returning Morgan to the sea. Although Bleker has said he doesn't like the idea of orcas being kept in pools, he still chooses to keep the animal locked up over the chance of being successfully released. Hopefully our motion will change all that.

Bad news from the Ukraine this week. According to the Dutch Animal Foundation Platform, stray dogs and cats in the Ukraine were thrown in a mobile crematorium, sometimes even when they were still alive. The Party for the Animals immediately asked Minister Schippers of Public Health Welfare and Sport if he could ask the Ukraine ambassador whether these killing methods were actually applied. And if they were, whether Minister Schippers will contact the Ukrainian ministry to prevent this terrible way of killing animals from ever happening again. These strays were killed in the run-up to the European Championship Football in 2012 in the Ukraine and Poland. They were regarded as a nuisance and therefore removed from the streets in this brutal manner. Large-scale 'clean-up actions' often take place during sports events, like in Greece, 2004 when the government wanted to clean up Athens’s image for the Olympic Games.

The Party for the Animals regularly raises the issue of culling stray animals. In June we asked parliamentary questions about strays in Romania, that were killed in a barbaric fashion. At the time we asked State Secretary Bleker if would speak to his Romanian colleague on this matter. Unfortunately he proved unwilling to do so. We will continue to work for equitable animal welfare policy, not only in the Netherlands, but in Europe too.
