Hoje quero dar-vos um exemplo prático sobre a maneira como o governo Holandês funciona. Sem sequer o mencionar ao parlamento, a ministra da agricultura da Holanda pediu milhões à Europa para convencer as pessoas na Holanda a ainda consumirem mais lacticínios. Não por isso ser melhor para o consumidor, mas porque a ministra acha que isso é bom para o sector.

Segundo a ministra Verburg seria muito bom para os holandeses consumirem muito mais lacticínios. Por isso fez lobby na Europa por uma campanha de 4 milhões de euros para a promoção de leite ( do tipo da campanha ‘galinha, a carninha mais versátil’) com o slogan ‘o teu corpo grita por leite’. A ministra quer desta maneira apoiar o sector de produtores de leite que estão com o problema duma supracapacidade de leite. ‘O mundo do avesso’, declara Marianne Thieme do Partido para os Animais. O sector quis livrar-se da quota do leite para poder produzir mais e isso foi uma das razões que fizeram baixar o preço deste. Agora os consumidores terão que beber esse lago de leite à custa da sua própria saúde e sendo os custos para quem paga impostos.

45% dos holandeses sofrem de obesidade sobretudo devido à consumpção demasiado elevada de proteínas animais. A Organização Mundial de Saúde (WHO) estipulou no ano passado que o estímulo à consumpção de lacticínios e carne causaria milhares de mortos por ano na União Europeia.

Investigadores em França e em Wageningen concluíram o ano passado que o aumento da quota do leite fez com que o preço do leite descesse drásticamente nos meses passados. Muitos produtores de leite estão neste momento com problemas financeiros. Isso é grave, mas é sobretudo a própria culpa do sector que pediu sucessivamente um aumento da produção de leite.

A ministra da agricultura Verburg convenceu o ano passado os seus colegas Europeus a adoptarem este aumento, apesar de alguns estados-membros como a Alemanha não estarem de acordo. Acabou por consegui-lo, em parte através dum forte lobby da organização de agricultores LTO e do sector de lacticínios. O Partido para os Animais foi o único partido no parlamento a protestar contínuamente contra o aumento da produção de leite, porque a indústria de produtores de lacticínios é dos sectores mais insustentáveis da Holanda.

Através duma pesquisa do Centro para a Agricultura e Meio Ambiente sabe-se que 1 vaca emite tantos gases que contribuem para o efeito de estufa como um carro que ande 70.000 quilómetros.

Os gases de escape e a produção de adubo das vacas são a causa de um terço do metano mundial. Metano aquece a Terra 20 vezes mais depressa que CO2. Além disso as vacas emitem também um terço de todo o amoníaco. A indústria da produção de leite é a razão principal porque agricultores cortam as florestas tropicais para a produção de rações.

Os adubos artificiais, antibióticos e hormonas administrados às vacas dissolvem-se e acabam por ir ter à àgua potável, destroem as costas de corais e são a causa de enormes ‘dead zones’ sem vida alguma nos oceanos. Acrescentando a isso que para a produção de um litrozinho de leite são necessários 990 litros de àgua, torna-se bem claro de que se trata aqui de um sector extremamente insustentável.

É inconcebível que este governo na alturte de uma crise climática, alimentar, crise de fosfatos, de àgua potável e crise financeira, queira desperdiçar dinheiro Europeu num sector com más notas relativamente a todas estas crises. Ajuda a empresas verdadeiramente sustentáveis como a Econcern não há, mas a agricultura fortemente poluente e sem consideração para com os animais é mantida artificialmente. A política da agricultura Europeia está falida e deve ser o mais rápidamente possível substituída por uma política sustentável.

Today I would like to give you a practical example of the way in which the Dutch government operates. I say this without sniping at the government but the Dutch minister of agriculture has asked Europe for millions to convince the Dutch public to consume even more dairy. Not because it benefits the consumer, but because the minister thinks it is good for the industry.

I wrote the following opinion piece on the matter that I would like to share with you:

Milk has had its’ day.

According to Minister Verburg, the Dutch consumer would benefit from consuming more dairy. For this reason this government representative is lobbying in Europe for a 4 million euro milk campaign, similar to the ‘chicken is the most multifaceted meat' that features the logline 'Your body is crying out for dairy'. The minister wants to support the struggling dairy industry that has a huge milk mountain to clear. 'It’s a world turned on its head,' says Marianne Thieme from the Party for the Animals. The industry wanted shot of the milk quota in order to be able to produce more which forced prices down. Consumers now have to drink the excess at the expense of their health and the taxpayer's dime.

45% of Dutch nationals suffer from obesity caused by consuming excessive animal proteins. The World Health Organisation (WHO) determined last year that if the European Union stimulates the dairy and meat industry it will lead to thousands of deaths a year.

Researchers in Wageningen and France concluded in April of this year that expanding the milk quota has caused the price of milk to drop drastically these past few months. Quite a few dairy farmers are now struggling with financial issues. This is a serious turn of events but the majority of the blame lies with the industry itself as they have repeatedly begged for increased milk production.

Minister of Agriculture Verburg pushed this increase past her European colleagues last, while other member states such as Germany had considerable objections. Partly due to intensive lobbying from farmer's organisation LTO and the dairy industry, she got her way anyway. The Party for the Animals is the only party in the lower house that has continuously raised objections to expanding milk production, as dairy farming is one of the most unsustainable industries in the Netherlands.

Research by the Centre for Agriculture and Environment has proved that one cow produces just as much greenhouse gasses in one year as a car that drives 70,000 kilometres.

The gasses and manure that cows are responsible for one third of the methane produced worldwide. Methane warms the earth twenty times faster than carbon dioxide. Cows are additionally responsible for one third of ammonia emissions. The diary industry is the number one cause for farmers to fell acres and acres of rainforest for cattle feed.

All the artificial fertiliser, antibiotics and hormones the cows are given wash away and end up in our drinking water supply, destroy coral reefs and the cause of enormous ocean ‘dead zones’ where no living thing resides. Then add a litre of milk that requires around 990 litres of water to produce and it should give you an idea about what we mean when we say it is an unsustainable industry.

I cannot believe that the cabinet in this time of crisis – climate crisis, food crisis, phosphate crisis, a fresh water crisis and financial crisis, wants to waste money on an industry that does nothing to help. There is currently no support for companies such as Econcern, and polluting business that are cruel to animals are being kept going by artificial means. European agriculture is bankrupt and needs to be replaced as quickly as possible by sustainable policy.
