No domingo dia 19 de novembro tivemos o congresso nacional de nosso partido. Como havia gente e como foi agradável! Este ano o número de membros cresceu com um quarto para 15.000 e continuamos a crescer mais que nunca. Isto ocasionou uma sala de congresso super lotada. Em março de 2018 o Partido para os Animais participará em quinze municípios nas eleições para os conselhos municipais. Durante o congresso os membros aprovaram a lista de candidatos e o programa eleitoral. Portanto nossos candidatos municipais poderão efectivamente ir à obra!

Como de costume falei aos nossos membros e enfatizei as características de nosso partido. Já que é quase tarde demais para nosso planeta e mudanças são realmente necessárias, o Partido para os Animais rompe com a política tradicional. Nós pleiteamos uma liderança verdadeira e coragem para fazer escolhas que mantenham nosso planeta habitável. Como por exemplo a abolição da pecuária intensiva e o rompimento de laços com empresas poluidoras.

Logo após o congresso anteciparam-se as eleições municipais nos municípios de Leeuwarden e Westerwolde. Com êxito, pois na semana passada pareceu que em ambos os municípios o Partido para os Animais ganhou uma cadeira! Certamente a política local também é muito importante para fazer a diferença. Assim, nosso grupo parlamentar no município de Amsterdã introduziu medidas contra a entrega não desejada de folhetos de propaganda e desse modo poupou milhares de árvores. E nosso grupo parlamentar na província de Brabante do Norte ajudou a evitar a realização de mais um mega-estábulo naquela província.

Este mês eu tive a honra de introduzir um dos melhores documentários do International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (IDFA). O documentário “Eating Animals” (Comer Animais) mostra o lado destrutivo da pecuária industrial intensiva. É um documentário muito profundo baseado no livro do escritor mundialmente famoso Jonathan Safran Foer com narrativas da atriz Nathalie Portman. Assim como o livro, o documentário oferece argumentos convincentes para reduzir o consumo da carne e restringir a produção industrial de alimentos provindos de animais. Com testemunhos emocionantes de agricultores que querem mudar a situação e que para isso também apelam fortemente à responsabilidade dos consumidores. Vá certamente ver o filme!

Ademais houve boas novas para os visons holandeses. O juiz do Tribunal Europeu decidiu que a lei que proíbe criar e matar visons é irrevogável e definitiva. A lei já entrou em vigor em 2013 mas para os criadores de visons existentes ela entrará em vigor a partir de 1º de janeiro de 2024. Conforme a lei, matar animais para o pêlo não é eticamente defensível. Ficamos muito felizes que o juiz europeu reconheceu isto e que ele decidiu manter a lei.

Na vez passada contei como a pesca é protegida pelo nosso governo. Ao mesmo tempo a pesca holandesa é co-responsável pela sobrepesca estrutural nas águas europeias. Nada menos que 88% das espécies de peixes são sobrepescadas e provavelmente 30% nunca mais poderá se restabelecer. Não obstante nosso governo focaliza-se persistentemente em interesses económicos a curto prazo. Dentro em pouco o Parlamento Europeu terá que votar sobre a controversa pesca por pulso eléctrico. Nossa euro-parlamentária Anja Hazekamp está lutando para conseguir que o Parlamento Europeu tome a decisão certa e vote contra a permissão para a pesca por pulso eléctrico. Será continuado!

Falando sobre a Europa: esta semana eu falarei com colegas de nossos partidos irmãos europeus na Haia. Ali já trocaremos de ideias sobre as eleições para o Parlamento Europeu em 2019. Neste momento Anja Hazekamp é nossa representante no Parlamento Europeu e naturalmente desejamos-lhe muito reforço para poder lutar melhor ainda pelo bem de nosso planeta e todos os seus habitantes.

On Sunday the 19th of November, our national party congress took place. And it was pleasantly busy! This year, our membership grew by one quarter to 15,000, and we are growing faster than ever. The congress hall was jam-packed because of it. The Party for the Animals will participate in the municipality elections in 15 municipalities in March 2018. The members gave their consent to the candidate lists and the election programme during the congress. Now our municipality elections candidates can start the real work!

As always, I spoke to our members during the congress and I emphasised our party’s individuality. It is one minute to twelve for our planet and we really should start doing things differently, the Party for the Animals is breaking with traditional politics. We advocate real leadership and daring to make choices that will keep our planet liveable. For example, the abandonment of intensive livestock farming and breaking ties with polluting companies.

Just after the congress, early elections were held in the municipalities of Leeuwarden and Westerwolde. And with great success, because last week it turned out that the Party for the Animals gained a seat in both municipalities! Local politics is definitely an important place to make the difference. For example, our political group in the municipality of Amsterdam has introduced some measures against the unwanted delivery of advertising brochures and saved thousands of trees as a result. And our political group in the province of Noord-Brabant contributed by managing to stop another factory farm in the province.

This month I had the honour to introduce one of the best documentaries at the International Documentary Film Festival (IDFA) in Amsterdam. The documentary “Eating Animals” shows the destructive side of intensive livestock farming. A very devastating documentary based on the book of the world-famous author Jonathan Safran Foer and narrated by actress Nathalie Portman. Just like the book, the documentary provides convincing arguments for reducing the consumption of meat and restricting the industrial production of food from animal sources. It includes upsetting testimonies by farmers who want to turn the tide and strongly appeal to the responsibility of consumers. So, please don’t miss the film!

Furthermore, there was good news for the Dutch minks. The judge of the European Court judged that the ban on the keeping and killing of minks, as laid down by the law, is irrevocable and definitive. The act has been in force since 2013 but will only enter into force for existing mink factories from 1 January 2024. According to the law, it cannot be defended from an ethical point of view that animals are killed for their fur. We are delighted that the European Court recognises this and maintains the prohibition.

Last week, I told you how the fishing industry is being protected by our government. This while the Dutch fishing industry is also partly responsible for the structural overfishing in European waters. No less than 88% of the species of fish is overfished and 30% will more than likely not be able to recover. But our government continues to focus on short-term economic interests. Speaking of Europe: This week, I will speak in The Hague with colleagues from our European sister parties. We will already start to exchange ideas about the European Parliament elections in 2019. At present, Anja Hazekamp is our representative in the European Parliament and we would love for her to get more support as from 2019 to put up an even better fight for our planet and all its inhabitants.
