O Partido do Bem-Estar dos Animais (Animal Welfare Party – AWP) obtém a primeira representação política do Reino Unido
O Partido do Bem-Estar dos Animais (AWP sigla em inglês) obteve, na semana passada, seu primeiro representante político no Reino Unido. Depois que um conselheiro da cidade desertou do Partido Verde. Jane Smith, que está na Câmara Municipal de Alsager, em Cheshire, fez história na semana passada depois de anunciar sua decisão de mudar de partido político. Smith atua no conselho desde 2015.
A nova representante do AWP disse em uma declaração: “Eu tomei esta decisão, pois acredito que é importante que comecemos a reconhecer e abordar a injustiça inerente aos nossos órgãos de decisão centrados no ser humano. Embora o passo que eu tomo hoje possa parecer pequeno, acredito que tem um vasto significado simbólico. Nós compartilhamos nosso mundo e nossos recursos naturais com tantas outras espécies, e é apenas direito e justo que esses outros animais e seus habitats estejam devidamente representados e considerados em nossa tomada de decisão”.

O partido, estabelecido há 10 anos, concorreu em três distritos eleitorais em Londres na eleição geral deste ano. O partido também concorreu às eleições da Assembléia do Parlamento Escocês e da Irlanda do Norte pela primeira vez no mesmo ano.
Vanessa Hudson, líder do partido AWP, disse: “O Reino Unido tem uma história orgulhosa de liderança de pensamento no que se refere ao bem-estar animal. Já é tempo de os animais terem representantes dedicados em nossos órgãos decisórios. Só assim, seus interesses e necessidades podem ser devidamente protegidos. Com o passo de Jane, o AWP dá seus primeiros passos para se juntar aos nossos partidos irmãos na Holanda, Alemanha, Portugal e Austrália que já conseguiram tal feito para animais”.
O AWP baseia-se no Partido para os Animais holandês – Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD), que detém cinco lugares na Câmara dos Deputados holandesa, dois no Senado holandês e um no Parlamento Europeu.

The Animal Welfare Party (AWP) got its first political representative in the UK last week after a town councillor defected from the Green Party. Jane Smith, who is on Alsager Town Council, in Cheshire, made history last week after announcing her decision to switch political parties. Smith has served on the council since 2015.
The new AWP representative said in a statement: “I have made this decision because I believe it is important that we begin to acknowledge and address the inherent unfairness of our human-centric decision making bodies. Although the step I take today may appear small, I believe it is of huge symbolic significance. We share our world and our natural resources with so many other species, and it is only right and fair that those other animals and their habitats are properly represented and considered in our decision making.”

The party, established 10 years ago, contested three London constituencies in this year’s General Election. The party also contested the Scottish Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly elections for the first time in the same year.
Vanessa Hudson, AWP party leader, said: “The UK has a proud history of thought leadership in animal welfare. It is high time animals had dedicated representatives in our decision making bodies. Only that way can their needs and interests begin to be properly protected. With Jane’s step, AWP takes its first steps to joining our sister parties in the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal and Australia who have already achieved that for animals.”
The AWP is based on the Dutch ‘Party for the Animals’ Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD), which holds five seats in the Dutch House of Representatives, two in the Dutch Senate and one in the European Parliament.
