Animal Welfare Party dobândește pentru prima dată reprezentare politică în Marea Britanie
Partidul pentru animale din Marea Britanie (The Animal Welfare Party – AWP) a dobândit săptămâna trecută primul său reprezentant politic în Marea Britanie, după ce un consilier municipal a demisionat din cadrul Green Party. Jane Smith, care este membră a Consiliului local Alsager, în Cheshire, a făcut istorie săptămâna trecută după ce și-a anunțat decizia de a schimba partidele politice. Smith a lucrat în consiliu din 2015.
Noul reprezentant al AWP a declarat: „Am luat această decizie deoarece consider că este important ca noi să începem să admitem și să înfruntăm nedreptatea inerentă a organelor noastre de decizie care sunt centrate uman. Deși pasul pe care îl fac astăzi poate părea mic, cred că are o semnificație simbolică foarte mare. Împărtășim lumea și resursele noastre naturale cu multe alte specii și este normal și corect ca celelalte animale și habitatele lor să fie reprezentate corespunzător și să fie luate în considerare în procesul decizional”.

Partidul, înființat acum 10 ani, s-a luptat pentru trei circumscripții londoneze în cadrul alegerilor generale din acest an. De asemenea, partidul a participat, pentru prima dată în același an, la alegerile pentru Parlamentului Scoțian și cel al Irlandei de Nord.
Vanessa Hudson, liderul AWP, a declarat: „Din punct de vedere istoric, Marea Britanie se mândrește ca fiind o autoritate în domeniul bunăstării animalelor. Este timpul ca animalele să aibă reprezentanți dedicați în cadrul organelor noastre de decizie. Numai în acest fel, nevoile și interesele lor încep să fie protejate în mod corespunzător. Cu pasul lui Jane, AWP face primii pași pentru a se alătura partidelor noastre surori din Țările de Jos, Germania, Portugalia și Australia, care au obținut deja acest lucru pentru animale”.
AWP se bazează pe Partidul pentru Animale neerlandez, ‘Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD)’, care deține cinci locuri în Camera Deputaților din Țările de Jos, două în Senatul neerlandez și unul în Parlamentul European.

The Animal Welfare Party (AWP) got its first political representative in the UK last week after a town councillor defected from the Green Party. Jane Smith, who is on Alsager Town Council, in Cheshire, made history last week after announcing her decision to switch political parties. Smith has served on the council since 2015.
The new AWP representative said in a statement: “I have made this decision because I believe it is important that we begin to acknowledge and address the inherent unfairness of our human-centric decision making bodies. Although the step I take today may appear small, I believe it is of huge symbolic significance. We share our world and our natural resources with so many other species, and it is only right and fair that those other animals and their habitats are properly represented and considered in our decision making.”

The party, established 10 years ago, contested three London constituencies in this year’s General Election. The party also contested the Scottish Parliament and Northern Ireland Assembly elections for the first time in the same year.
Vanessa Hudson, AWP party leader, said: “The UK has a proud history of thought leadership in animal welfare. It is high time animals had dedicated representatives in our decision making bodies. Only that way can their needs and interests begin to be properly protected. With Jane’s step, AWP takes its first steps to joining our sister parties in the Netherlands, Germany, Portugal and Australia who have already achieved that for animals.”
The AWP is based on the Dutch ‘Party for the Animals’ Partij voor de Dieren (PvdD), which holds five seats in the Dutch House of Representatives, two in the Dutch Senate and one in the European Parliament.
