De meerderheid van de Nederlanders ziet niets in de bouw van megastallen. Toch wordt op dit moment in Grubbenvorst in de provincie Limburg gebouwd aan een megastal waar meer dan een miljoen kippen en 35.000 varkens gehouden mogen gaan worden. Het Kabinet zegt wel dat ze verdere industrialisering van de veehouderij wil tegen gaan, maar doet niets om deze ontwikkeling te stoppen. Ze is enkel van plan om gemeenten en provincies de mogelijkheid te bieden uitbreidingen van de veehouderij tegen te houden op grond van volksgezondheid. Maar het is dus geheel aan de provincie of gemeente of ze die mogelijkheid wil benutten. Als het Kabinet echt ernst is dan moet zij, zolang die nieuwe wettelijke mogelijkheid er niet is, een moratorium instellen op de vergunningverlening van megastallen.
De omstreden Nederlandse varkenshouder Adriaan Straathof die in de gemeente Buren alleen al een varkensflat heeft met 19.000 dieren, heeft zich schuldig gemaakt aan ernstig dierenleed in zijn Duitse stallen en daarom een beroepsverbod in Duitsland gekregen. De varkenshouder heeft ook vestigingen in Hongarije. Ik heb Kamervragen gesteld over de mogelijkheden voor Nederland om extra te controleren en op te treden waar nodig en voor maatregelen op Europees niveau, zodat hij niet elders opnieuw kan beginnen en daar dezelfde overtredingen kan begaan.
De veehouderij is na de energie-industrie de grootste veroorzaker van de opwarming van de aarde en moet daarom op de agenda van de klimaattop die dit jaar in Parijs wordt gehouden. In Brussel wordt momenteel vergaderd over mogelijke maatregelen om de opwarming van de aarde te voorkomen. Eind dit jaar komen wereldleiders van binnen en buiten Europa bij elkaar om klimaatafspraken te maken. De productie van vlees, melk en eieren is verantwoordelijk voor achttien procent van alle broeikasgassenuitstoot: dat is meer dan al het verkeer en vervoer bij elkaar. Het is onverantwoord om een klimaattop te houden en het niet over het aanpakken van de bio-industrie te hebben.
Afgelopen week heeft mijn collega Esther Ouwehand tijdens een debat over paarden gepleit voor een verbod op paardenmarkten. Ter vermaak van mensen staan de gestresste paarden op dorpsfeesten tussen de kermisattracties. Dat is echt niet meer van deze tijd. De paarden worden op deze markten verhandeld en hierbij wordt vaak mishandeling en verwaarlozing geconstateerd. Wij willen hier een einde aan maken.
In Europa werd ook over paarden gesproken deze week. Paardenvleesfraudeur Willy Selten bleek ongehinderd een nieuw vleesbedrijf in België te kunnen beginnen. De wrede paardentransporten en het feit dat het volstrekt onduidelijk is waar de paarden vandaan komen waardoor de voedselveiligheid in het geding is, moet stoppen. Onze Europarlementariër Anja Hazekamp heeft de Europese Commissie opgeroepen om snel betere controlesystemen in te voeren en een Europese blacklist van vleesfraudeurs op te stellen. Tot die tijd moet al het paardenvlees uit de handel, zegt Anja.
De Europese Commissie heeft het
onzalige plan om vrijwel alle gegevens van vliegtuigpassagiers op te gaan slaan, zelfs de maaltijdvoorkeur. Dit schaadt de privacy! Wij zullen ons daartegen blijven verzetten.

At this moment, around 250 dolphins are being slaughtered in the Japanese fishing village of Taiji. This annual hunt relates closely to the trade in dolphins for entertainment. After wild dolphins are rounded up in a bay, the finest animals are selected and sold for a lot of money to dolphinariums around the globe. The remaining dolphins are brutally slaughtered. Cove Guardians, volunteers of the animal welfare organisation Sea Shepherd, who protest these massacres on site, report horrific scenes.
This must stop! During oral question time last Tuesday, we called minister Timmermans to Parliament. We are glad that minister Timmermans of Foreign Affairs promised that the Dutch ambassador in Japan will take a stand against this slaughter of dolphins. The ambassadors of the United Kingdom and the United States already condemned these massacres. The Netherlands remained silent, whereas government adopted the formal position that dolphin hunting must be stopped.
Although this is a step in the right direction, we must take much tougher action against these gruesome massacres. We also want the Netherlands to set conditions with regard to free trade with Japan. This means that Japan must respect human rights, respect the moratorium on whaling and stop the slaughter of dolphins before further trade negotiations can be conducted.

Last week, I had a debate on a further transfer of power to Brussels and the citizens’ initiative BurgerforumEU.nl, which rightly calls for a referendum. We believe it is not acceptable to transfer more sovereignty to Brussels without asking the Dutch people first by way of a referendum. A poll by Dutch pollster Maurice de Hond has shown that 67 per cent of Dutch people are of the opinion that a referendum should be held in case of a new transfer of power from the Netherlands to Brussels.
We are a strong advocate of international cooperation, but we distance ourselves from the way in which more and more decision-making powers are transferred to an undemocratically organised Brussels.
Brussels has a major impact on agricultural policy (half of the Brussels budget goes to agricultural subsidies) and the way in which Brussels has weakened climate targets is another proof of major weakness of the current EU. For example, Brussels gives more room to nuclear energy ….
