Mooi nieuws om mee te beginnen: Nederland geeft een warm welkom aan de wolf, mocht dit dier de grens met Duitsland oversteken. Deze week heeft de staatssecretaris van Economische Zaken beloofd de wolf op de lijst van inheemse beschermde dieren te zetten naar aanleiding van ons verzoek. Het blijft natuurlijk de vraag wanneer de wolf naar Nederland komt, maar het is bekend dat Duitse roedels steeds vaker vlakbij de Nederlandse grens leven. Wij vinden dat de wolf meer dan welkom is in Nederland, het is zelfs een verrijking van de natuur!

De wolf breidt zijn gebied steeds verder uit. Helaas kwam deze week ook het nieuws dat de panda niet meer te redden is. Door de opwarming van de aarde groeit bamboe (het voedsel van de panda) aan het einde van deze eeuw nauwelijks meer op de plekken waar de panda leeft. Diep triest dat we te laat zijn met het aanpassen van ons eigen gedrag en dat daarom dit prachtige wilde dier niet meer te redden is.

Afgelopen week was het debat naar aanleiding van de regeringsverklaring. Het nieuwe kabinet Rutte zit eindelijk, maar de eerste rommelige weken van dit kabinet voorspellen weinig goeds voor de toekomst. Premier Rutte gaf aan: “Problemen hebben vertrouwen tussen partijen versterkt, garanties kan ik u niet geven.” Door de crisis in het torentje zou je bijna die andere crisis uit het oog verliezen, zie http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2012/11/austerity_protests.html. Ik heb tijdens het debat vijf moties ingediend om het vernietigende beleid op het gebied van natuur, milieu en dieren van oud staatssecretaris Bleker ongedaan te maken. Onder andere de Nota Dierenwelzijn van Bleker moet nodig aangepast worden om dieren echt de bescherming te geven die ze verdienen.

Daarnaast aandacht besteed aan risicovolle mestvergisters. Wij eisen een bouwstop voor mestvergisters vanwege de aanzienlijke gevaren voor omwonenden en het milieu. Uit onderzoek van het televisieprogramma KRO Reporter blijkt dat er ernstig gefraudeerd wordt en op grote schaal illegale stoffen worden toegevoegd aan de mest. Daardoor ontstaat in de mestvergisters een gevaarlijke cocktail en raakt landbouwgrond ernstig vervuild.
Mestvergisters worden gebouwd om grote mestoverschotten weg te werken. Aan de 150 mestvergisters die Nederland nu telt, is onder het mom van ‘groene stroom’ al 345 miljoen euro subsidie uitgegeven. Maar steeds meer mensen komen in opstand tegen deze ontwikkeling. Veel omwonenden klagen over stankoverlast, waarbij ze zelfs dagenlang last hebben van hoofdpijn en misselijkheid. Volgens ons verdienen volksgezondheid en het milieu bescherming boven de economische belangen van de vee-industrie.

De gemeente West-Hollywood wil een verbod op de verkoop van bont. Mooi voorbeeld voor de rest van de wereld als het verbod er komt.

In Zuid-Afrika heeft een Thaise stroper 40 jaar celstraf gekregen voor zijn illegale stroperspraktijken waarbij neushoorns zijn gedood. Zeer verdiend!

Het International Food Policy Research Institute laat prachtig zien hoe de vraag naar vlees in de afgelopen 40 jaar explosief is gegroeid. De honger naar vlees op aarde heeft ervoor gezorgd dat er in 2010 bijna drie keer zoveel dieren werden gefokt dan in 1970. Als voorbeeld: in 2010 werden er wereldwijd 19,4 miljard (?!) kippen gefokt die onder erbarmelijke omstandigheden moesten leven voor onze vleesbehoefte.

Let's start with some good news: The Netherlands is offering wolves a warm welcome, should they cross the German border. This week, the State Secretary of Economic Affairs promised to put the wolf on the list of native protect animals as a result of our request. It does not take effect of course until the wolves come to the Netherlands but we know that German packs are living ever closer to the Dutch border. We think the wolf is more than welcome in the Netherlands, they even add to the natural surrounds!

Wolves are constantly widening their living area. Unfortunately, we also heard this week that the panda can longer be saved. Because of global warming, bamboo – the panda's food – will not grow where the panda lives by the end of the century. We’re deeply saddened by the fact that we're too late in changing our behaviour and that this gorgeous wild animal can no longer be saved.

Last week was the debate that resulted from a government policy statement. The new Rutte cabinet is finally in power, but this cabinet's first sloppy weeks predict very little good for the future. Prime Minister Rutte admitted: “Problems have reinforced the trust between the parties, but I cannot provide you any guarantees.” This crisis means you could almost lose sight over the other crisis, go look athttp://www.boston.com/bigpicture/2012/11/austerity_protests.html. During the debate I tabled five motions to undo former State Secretary Bleker's destructive policies in the field of nature, the environment and animals. Such things as Bleker's Animal Welfare Policy Document needs modifying to give animals the true protection they deserve.

After that, we focussed on risky manure digesters. We're demanding a building moratorium on manure digesters because they pose a significant threat to nearby residents and the environment. A television programme called KRO Reporter has conducted an investigation which proves serious fraud and that illegal substances are being added to the manure on a large scale. This means the manure digesters are really a dangerous chemical cocktail and seriously pollute agricultural land.

Manure digesters are being build to eliminate a huge amount of manure. The 150 manure digesters currently operating in the Netherlands are given a 345 million Euro subsidy under the guise of ‘green electricity'. But more and more people are rising up against this development. Many nearby residents are complaining about the stench, that gives them days-long headaches and nausea. We believe that Public Health and the environment deserve protection over the cattle-farming industry's economic interests.

The Municipality of West Hollywood wants to ban the sale of fur. This would serve as a great example for the rest of the world to follow if the ban were to happen.

In South Africa, a Thai poacher has been sentenced to 40 years of jail time for his illegal poaching activities that resulted in rhinoceros deaths. A well deserved stretch!

The International Food Policy Research Institute shows how the demand for meat has grown explosively in the past 40 years. This hunger for meat means that almost three times as many animals were bred in 2010 than were bred in 1970. As an example: in 2010, the world bred 19.4 billion (?!) chickens that had to live in abominable circumstances just to feed our need.
