Worldlog Week 41 – 2008

Afgelopen woensdag ben ik terug gekomen in Nederland na een succesvolle en inspirerende première van Meat the Truth in Hollywood. We hebben veel enthousiaste reactie gehad en er zijn afspraken gepland om mogelijkheden te onderzoeken voor verdere distributie van de film door heel de V.S..

Inmiddels is Meat the Truth geselecteerd en/of genomineerd voor verschillende belangrijke filmfestivals in de Verenigde Staten zoals het Montana CINE Festival in Missoula, Montana, het 7th Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film festival in Nevada City, California en de 56th Columbus International Film + Video Festival, ofwel ‘The Chris Awards’.

Ik heb deze week hard gewerkt aan mijn debatbijdrage voor het debat over het wetsvoorstel “pelsdierfokverbod’ van de Partij van de Arbeid en de Socialistische Partij. De nertsenfokkers krijgen bij deze wet nog tien jaar om hun bedrijf af te bouwen. Ik zou liever zien dat ze onmiddellijk stoppen, nu er al meer dan 25 jaar wordt gesproken over een verbod. Een warme sanering van de bedrijfstak is dan een goeie optie.

In 2002 was er nog een voorstel van Paars II, het Nederlands kabinet dat van 3 augustus 1998 tot 22 juli 2002 regeerde, om de nertsenfokkerijen te verbieden, maar dat werd door het volgende kabinet, Balkenende I, van tafel geveegd. Sindsdien hebben de bontfokkers het aantal nertsen dat ze fokken verdubbeld, terwijl ze weten dat de overgrote meerderheid van de Nederlandse bevolking een verbod wil! Ze hebben dus welbewust het investeringsrisico genomen dat de fokkerijen alsnog verboden kunnen worden.

De ChristenUnie en de Partij voor de Vrijheid lijken het huidige wetsvoorstel niet te willen steunen terwijl ze in hun campagnes en eerdere debatten altijd hebben aangegeven voor een pelsdierfokverbod te zijn!

Een ruime Kamermeerderheid heeft ingestemd met een motie van de Partij voor de Dieren om een einde te maken aan omzeilen coupeerverbod van paardenstaarten.
Het couperen van staarten bij paarden is sinds 2001 verboden in Nederland. Toch wordt dit verbod vaak omzeild door paarden in Frankrijk te laten couperen. Daar is het couperen om cultuurhistorische redenen nog wel toegestaan en worden naar schatting jaarlijks honderden Nederlandse veulens gecoupeerd. Deze week werd een motie van de Partij voor de Dieren aangenomen die vraagt om maatregelen om deze sluiproute tegen te gaan. De motie werd mede-ondertekend door de Partij van de Arbeid.

Ik heb vorige week een opinieartikel gepubliceerd in het Financieel Dagblad over de kredietcrisis in relatie tot onze hebzucht, en hoe we kunnen bouwen aan een betere wereld wanneer we van de kredietcrisis, de klimaatcrisis, de voedselcrisis, de drinkwatercrisis en de dierziektencrises een echt keerpunt maken. After a successful and inspiring premiere of Meat the Truth in Hollywood I got back to the Netherlands last Wednesday. People reacted very enthusiastically and we arranged meetings to investigate the possibility of distributing the film through the entirety of the United States.

Meat the Truth has meanwhile been selected and/or nominated for different significant American film festivals such as the Montana CINE Festival in Missoula, Montana, the 7th Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Nevada City, California and the 56th Columbus International Film and Video Festival, otherwise known as “The Chris Awards.

I've been working hard this week on my contribution to the debate about the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) and the Socialist Party (SP)'s “Fur Bearing Animal Breeding Ban Act” proposal.

This Act will give mink breeders ten years to dismantle their businesses. I would prefer they stopped immediately, especially as they've been talking about a ban for 25 years now, however a slow but sure reorganisation of this industry is a good option.

In 2002, the Paars II coalition, the Dutch cabinet that governed from 3 August 1998 to 22 July 2002, had a proposal to ban mink breeding, but that was swept from the table by the following cabinet, Balkenende I.

Since then, fur breeders have doubled the amount of minks they breed, even though they know that the vast majority of the Dutch population support a ban! They therefore made a conscious decision to invest in breeding farms that could still be banned.

The ChristianUnion Party and the Party for Freedom (PVV) appear to not want to support the current Act proposal, whereas in their campaigns and earlier debates they stated they were for a fur bearing animal breeding ban!

The large majority of Dutch parliament voted for the Party for the Animals' motion to put an end to the circumvention of the ban on docking horses' tails. Docking horses' tails has been banned in the Netherlands since 2001, however people are circumventing this law by having their horses' tails docked in France. Docking is still allowed in France for cultural-historic reasons and it is estimated that hundreds of Dutch foals have their tails docked there each year. This week, the Party for the Animals' motion that requests measures be taken to stop this sneak route was adopted. The motion was co-signed by the PvdA.
