Worldlog Semana 41 – 2008

El miércoles pasado regrese a Holanda después de un estreno exitoso e inspirador de Meat The Truth en Hollywood. Hemos recibido muchas reacciones entusiastas y se han hecho acuerdos para investigar las posibilidades para ampliar la distribución de la película por todo Estados Unidos.

Entretanto Meat The Truth ha sido seleccionada y/o nominada para diferentes festivales de cine en Los Estados Unidos tales como el Montana CINE Festival en Missoula, Montana, el 7º. Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Festival en Nevada City, California y el 56º Columbus International Film & Video festival, o mejor dicho ‘The Chris Awards’.

En la semana pasada he trabajado duro en mi participación en el debate sobre la proposición de ley para la “prohibicion de la cría de animales cazados por sus pieles”, presentado por el Partido para el Obrero y el Partido Socialista. Según esa ley a los criadores de visones un periodo de diez anos para terminar con su empresa. Yo preferiría que terminen en forma inmediata, ya que se ha estado hablando durante 25 años sobre una prohibición de la misma. Una buena opción en este caso seria un saneamiento más ‘cálido’ de ese ramo industrial.

En 2002 existía una propuesta por parte del gobierno que estaba entre 1998 y 2002 para prohibir la cría de visones pero el próximo gobierno, Balkenende I, se cancelo. Desde entonces los criadores aumentaron el numero de visones, sabiendo que la mayoría de la población de Holanda quiere que se prohiba! Esto quiere decir que conscientemente tomaron la decisión para invertir en un comercio del cual saben que podría ser prohibido.

Parece ser que el Partido Unión Cristiana (Christenunie) y el Partido para la Liberación (Partij voor de Vrijheid) no quieren apoyar la actual proposición de ley, siempre habiendo indicado en sus campañas y debates anteriores que estaban a favor de una prohibición de la cría de animales cazados por sus pieles!

Una mayoría amplia de la Camera Popular apoyo una resolución presentada por el Partido para los Animales para terminar con la posibilidad que usa la gente para evitar la ley existente para cortar las colas de los caballos. Cortar colas de caballo esta prohibido en Holanda desde el ano 2001. Sin embargo hay personas que van hasta Francia para cortar las colas de sus caballos. En ese país se permite aun – y por razones culturales/historicas – cortar las colas a los caballos y así son cortadas anualmente las colas de cienes de potros Holandeses. En esta semana fue aceptada la resolución del Partido para los Animales, solicitando medidas para evitar tal camino. La resolución fue también firmada por el Partido para El Obrero (Partij van de Arbeid).

Publique en la semana pasada un articulo en el Periódico Financiero (Financieel Dagblad) sobre la crisis de créditos con relación a nuestra avaricia y sobre la forma para construir un mundo mejor haciendo de tal crisis de créditos, la crisis de clima, la crisis de alimentos, la crisis de agua y la crisis de las enfermedades animales, un verdadero punto de cambio. After a successful and inspiring premiere of Meat the Truth in Hollywood I got back to the Netherlands last Wednesday. People reacted very enthusiastically and we arranged meetings to investigate the possibility of distributing the film through the entirety of the United States.

Meat the Truth has meanwhile been selected and/or nominated for different significant American film festivals such as the Montana CINE Festival in Missoula, Montana, the 7th Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Nevada City, California and the 56th Columbus International Film and Video Festival, otherwise known as “The Chris Awards.

I've been working hard this week on my contribution to the debate about the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) and the Socialist Party (SP)'s “Fur Bearing Animal Breeding Ban Act” proposal.

This Act will give mink breeders ten years to dismantle their businesses. I would prefer they stopped immediately, especially as they've been talking about a ban for 25 years now, however a slow but sure reorganisation of this industry is a good option.

In 2002, the Paars II coalition, the Dutch cabinet that governed from 3 August 1998 to 22 July 2002, had a proposal to ban mink breeding, but that was swept from the table by the following cabinet, Balkenende I.

Since then, fur breeders have doubled the amount of minks they breed, even though they know that the vast majority of the Dutch population support a ban! They therefore made a conscious decision to invest in breeding farms that could still be banned.

The ChristianUnion Party and the Party for Freedom (PVV) appear to not want to support the current Act proposal, whereas in their campaigns and earlier debates they stated they were for a fur bearing animal breeding ban!

The large majority of Dutch parliament voted for the Party for the Animals' motion to put an end to the circumvention of the ban on docking horses' tails. Docking horses' tails has been banned in the Netherlands since 2001, however people are circumventing this law by having their horses' tails docked in France. Docking is still allowed in France for cultural-historic reasons and it is estimated that hundreds of Dutch foals have their tails docked there each year. This week, the Party for the Animals' motion that requests measures be taken to stop this sneak route was adopted. The motion was co-signed by the PvdA.
