Worldlog Week 26 – 2012

De Eerste Kamer heeft afgelopen week het wetsvoorstel om onverdoofd ritueel slachten te verbieden verworpen. In de Eerste Kamer stemden naast de Christelijke partijen ook de senatoren van VVD, PvdA en D66 tegen het wetsvoorstel. Daarnaast stemden 3 van de 5 GroenLinks-senatoren tegen de wet.

Ik voel me zeer gesterkt door de stroom van steunbetuigingen die na de stemming bij ons zijn binnengekomen. Religie mag geen vrijbrief zijn voor ernstig, onnodig en vermijdbaar dierenleed. Ik zal na de verkiezingen een nieuw wetsontwerp indienen, waarin rekening gehouden wordt met de bezwaren in de Eerste Kamer, maar waarmee aan het onverdoofd slachten alsnog een einde komt. Maar eerst verkiezingen!

We zullen sterker terugkomen na de verkiezingen en alsnog een meerderheid zoeken voor ons voorstel. Daarom is het van het grootste belang dat het maatschappelijk debat over het onverdoofd slachten in volle hevigheid gevoerd blijft worden.

In ons vandaag gepresenteerde nieuwe verkiezingsprogramma, waar ik weer trots op ben �, geven we uitgebreid onze visie op het huidige economische systeem en waar we naartoe moeten voor een duurzame, economisch stabiele toekomst.

We hebben een multimediaal partijprogramma, het eerste ter wereld! Het programma is namelijk met behulp van QR codes en hyperlinks voorzien van koppelingen aan een groot aantal beeldfragmenten, rapporten en achtergrondartikelen die tijdens het lezen te raadplegen zijn via smartphone, computer of tablet. De titel van het programma luidt: “Hou vast aan je idealen, laat ze niet wegcijferen”. Uit het nieuwe verkiezingsprogramma spreekt de ambitie een groter publiek bekend te maken met het feit dat wij de groenste en meest hervormingsgezinde agenda hebben.

Last week the senate rejected the legislative bill seeking to ban the ritual slaughter of animals without prior stunning. In addition to the Christian parties, the senators of the VVD, PvdA and D66 also voted against the bill. Furthermore, three of the five GroenLinks senators rejected the bill.

I feel extremely encouraged by the many messages of support that have arrived since the vote. Religion must never be an excuse for serious, unnecessary and avoidable suffering of animals. I intend to submit a new draft bill after the elections which, while taking account of the objections voiced in the senate, will seek to put an end to the slaughter of animals without prior stunning. But first the elections!

Following the elections, we will return to the House of Representatives stronger than ever and we will again attempt to get a majority to support our proposal. It is therefore extremely important that the debate going on in the country about the slaughter of animals without prior stunning continues unabated.
