Morgen is het vervolg van het Eerste Kamerdebat over mijn initiatiefwetsvoorstel voor een verbod op het onverdoofd ritueel slachten. Afgelopen week is het ´polderconvenant´ wat betreft onverdoofd ritueel slachten van demissionair staatsecretaris Bleker gepresenteerd, dat morgen ook wordt besproken in de Eerste Kamer. Bleker kwam in de afrondende fase van de behandeling van de initiatiefwet in de Eerste Kamer onverwacht met het plan om een convenant te sluiten met religieuze organisaties. Het debat kwam daardoor jammer genoeg stil te liggen. De Eerste Kamer heeft vervolgens erg lang moeten wachten op duidelijkheid.
Het convenant dat Bleker nu uiteindelijk presenteert lijkt sterke gelijkenis te vertonen met het amendement van het CDA dat in de Tweede Kamer nauwelijks steun kreeg. Met dat amendement zou namelijk geregeld worden dat religieuze slachters de gelegenheid zouden krijgen tot onverdoofd slachten, waarbij als compromis werd voorgesteld om een termijn van 45 seconden in acht te nemen waarin het dier met doorgesneden hals zou mogen lijden en zou stikken in zijn eigen bloed. Zou het dier na die 45 seconden nog niet buiten bewustzijn zijn, dan zou het alsnog een genadeschot krijgen, en zou het vlees niet meer geschikt mogen zijn voor Koosjer of Halal consumptie, maar zou het ter destructie worden afgevoerd en tot veevoer verwerkt.

In de Tweede Kamer bestond nauwelijks sympathie of begrip voor het amendement van het CDA.
Alleen de fracties van de christelijke partijen (CDA, ChristenUnie en SGP) steunden het voorstel. Een schril contrast met de grote meerderheid in de Tweede Kamer die besloot tot instemming met het wetsvoorstel. Ik ben zeer verbaasd over de gang van zaken rond het convenant, maar ik zie er naar uit om morgen te pleiten voor mijn wetsvoorstel, dat wel écht verbetering oplevert voor dieren.

De verschrikkelijke slacht van dolfijnen op de Faeröer Eilanden (een autonome provincie van Denemarken) is weer begonnen. Jaarlijks vindt er hier een barbaarse slachtpartij plaats onder grienden, een dolfijnensoort. Deze prachtige dolfijnensoort werd ooit bejaagd om de lokale bevolking van voedsel te voorzien. Tegenwoordig is deze jacht niet meer nodig om de bevolking te voeden, maar is de jaarlijkse jacht uitgegroeid tot een culturele traditie. Tijdens de jacht drijven mannen in bootjes een groep grienden naar een baai, waar ze uit het water worden gehaald door stalen haken in de kop te slaan. Ieder jaar worden er honderden dieren gedood tijdens het jachtseizoen, er zijn er nu al 120 gedood.
Wij vinden het een schande dat de overheid van de Faeröer eilanden de jacht, die geen enkel redelijk doel dient, nog steeds toestaat en roepen daarom al jaren iedereen op de regering van de Faeröer Eilanden via een protestmail te laten weten dat hier zo snel mogelijk een einde aan moet komen. Tomorrow will see the continuation of the debate in the Upper House on my private member’s bill seeking to ban the slaughter of animals without prior stunning. Last week, outgoing state secretary Bleker presented a ‘typically Dutch’ consensus agreement, which will also be discussed in the Upper House tomorrow. In the closing phase of the discussion of the private member’s bill in the Upper House, Bleker came unexpectedly with a plan to strike an accord with the religious organizations. This unfortunately stalled the debate and the Upper House has had to wait long time for Bleker to clarify his intentions.
The agreement that Bleker has presented bears a strong resemblance to the CDA’s amendment that barely garnered any support in the Lower House. That amendment would allow religious butchers to kill animals without stunning them first on the condition that the animal dies – chokes in its own blood – within 45 seconds of its throat being cut. If the animal is still conscious after 45 seconds, it would then be delivered a deathblow, in which case the meat, no longer be suitable for kosher or halal consumption, would be processed into animal feed.

The Lower House had very little sympathy or understanding for the CDA’s amendment. The bill only found support among the Christian parties (CDA, ChristenUnie and SGP). A sharp contrast to the large majority in the Lower House that supported our bill. I am truly amazed about the events surrounding the agreement. Nevertheless I look forward to arguing for my bill tomorrow. It is a move that will bring real improvement to animals.

The atrocious hunt of dolphins in the Faeroe Islands (an autonomous province of Denmark) has started again. Each year these islands are the scene of a barbaric slaughter of pilot whales, a species of dolphin. This beautiful aquatic mammal was once hunted to feed the local population. In this day and age, the islanders no longer need to hunt the dolphins for food, but the hunt has since become a cultural tradition. During the hunt, men in small boats drive a group of pilot whales into a bay where they are pulled out of the water by steel hooks slammed into their heads. Each year hundreds of animals are killed during the hunting season. So far this year, 120 have met their deaths in this cruel manner.
We find it outrageous that the government of the Faeroe Islands still allows this hunt, which serves no reasonable purpose, to continue. We therefore call upon everyone to sign an e-mail to the Faeroe Islands government to demand that this hunt is stopped as soon as possible. Sign here!
