Mañana es la continuación del primer debate parlamentario sobre la presentación de mi propuesta de ley de prohibir la masacre ritual sin aturdimiento. La semana pasada fue presentada una variación del pacto en relación con masacre ritual del secretario de estado saliente, Mañana será también discutido en el Senado. Bleker durante la discusión de la fase final de la propuesta de ley en el Senado de forma inesperada vino con el plan de celebrar un pacto con las organizaciones religiosas. Motivo por el cual el debate lamentablemente quedo estancado. El Senado posteriormente ha tenido que esperar largo tiempo para tener una mayor claridad.

El pacto que ahora finalmente Bleker presenta parece tener un fuerte parecido con la enmienda de la Democracia Cristiana en el Congreso y que recibió poco apoyo. Con tal modificación se arreglaría que los matadores religiosos tendrían la oportunidad para matar sin anestesia. Presentando como o compromiso un período de 45 segundos para observar que el animal con el cuello cortado podría sufrir y ahogarse en su propia sangre. Si después de los 45 secundos el animal aun no quede subconsciente se le dará al animal un tiro final después de lo que la carne no sería más útil para el consumo Halal o Kosher, pero sería eliminado para la representación en la alimentación animal y procesados.

En el Parlamento hubo poca simpatía por la modificación del CDA.

Sólo las fracciones de los partidos cristianos (CDA, Unión Cristiana y el PPD) apoyaron la propuesta. Un gran contraste con la gran mayoría en el Parlamento que decidió aprobar el proyecto de ley. Estoy muy sorprendido por los acontecimientos que rodearon el pacto, pero estoy deseando que llegue mañana para presentar mi propuesta de ley, que realmente si significara un cambio para los animales.

La terrible masacre de delfines en las Islas Faroe (una provincia autónoma de Dinamarca) ha comenzado de nuevo. Anualmente un masacre bárbaro tiene lugar aquí entre los delfines de allí. Esta hermosa especie de delfines en los tiempos lejanos tomo lugar para proveer la población de alimentos. Hoy en día, esta caza ya no es necesaria para alimentar a la población, pero la caza anual se ha convertido en una tradición cultural. Durante la caza, unos hombres en barcos conducen a un grupo de ballenas hacia una bahía, donde son retirados del agua a través de ganchos de acero en la cabeza. Cada año, cientos de animales son matados muertos durante la temporada de caza. En n la actualidad hay ya 120 muertos.

Consideramos que es una vergüenza que el gobierno de las Islas Faro sigue permitiendo la caza, que no tienen ningún propósito razonable, y por lo tanto llamamos a todo el mundo hacer saber al gobierno de las Islas Faroe a través de un correo de protesta que esto tendrá que terminar cuanto antes. Tomorrow will see the continuation of the debate in the Upper House on my private member’s bill seeking to ban the slaughter of animals without prior stunning. Last week, outgoing state secretary Bleker presented a ‘typically Dutch’ consensus agreement, which will also be discussed in the Upper House tomorrow. In the closing phase of the discussion of the private member’s bill in the Upper House, Bleker came unexpectedly with a plan to strike an accord with the religious organizations. This unfortunately stalled the debate and the Upper House has had to wait long time for Bleker to clarify his intentions.

The agreement that Bleker has presented bears a strong resemblance to the CDA’s amendment that barely garnered any support in the Lower House. That amendment would allow religious butchers to kill animals without stunning them first on the condition that the animal dies – chokes in its own blood – within 45 seconds of its throat being cut. If the animal is still conscious after 45 seconds, it would then be delivered a deathblow, in which case the meat, no longer be suitable for kosher or halal consumption, would be processed into animal feed.

The Lower House had very little sympathy or understanding for the CDA’s amendment. The bill only found support among the Christian parties (CDA, ChristenUnie and SGP). A sharp contrast to the large majority in the Lower House that supported our bill. I am truly amazed about the events surrounding the agreement. Nevertheless I look forward to arguing for my bill tomorrow. It is a move that will bring real improvement to animals.

The atrocious hunt of dolphins in the Faeroe Islands (an autonomous province of Denmark) has started again. Each year these islands are the scene of a barbaric slaughter of pilot whales, a species of dolphin. This beautiful aquatic mammal was once hunted to feed the local population. In this day and age, the islanders no longer need to hunt the dolphins for food, but the hunt has since become a cultural tradition. During the hunt, men in small boats drive a group of pilot whales into a bay where they are pulled out of the water by steel hooks slammed into their heads. Each year hundreds of animals are killed during the hunting season. So far this year, 120 have met their deaths in this cruel manner.

We find it outrageous that the government of the Faeroe Islands still allows this hunt, which serves no reasonable purpose, to continue. We therefore call upon everyone to sign an e-mail to the Faeroe Islands government to demand that this hunt is stopped as soon as possible. Sign here!
