Worldlog Week 23 – 2010

Bij de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen vorige week heeft de Partij voor de Dieren haar twee zetels behouden, wat een mooi resultaat! De Nederlandse kiezers hebben op grote schaal 'strategisch gekozen' wat ons wel stemmen heeft gekost in de richting van de grotere partijen zoals Partij voor de Arbeid, GroenLinks en Volkspartij voor Vrijheid en Democratie (VVD). Maar we zijn erin geslaagd onze twee zetels in deze verkiezingsstorm te behouden. Ondanks alle tegenwind hebben we kunnen bewijzen een stabiele factor te zijn in de Nederlandse politiek. De rechts-liberale VVD is de grootste partij geworden en mag daardoor als eerste proberen een regering te vormen. Mijn collega Esther Ouwehand en ik zullen in de aankomende Tweede Kamerperiode de VVD voortdurend blijven herinneren aan de 'Groenrechtse beloften' van VVD-leider Mark Rutte.

Bijgaand foto's van de vrolijke verkiezingsavond waar lang onduidelijkheid bleef bestaan over de uitslag. Samen met onze geweldige medewerkers en vrijwilligers heb ik vol vertrouwen uitgekeken naar de tweede zetel die er inderdaad in de vroege ochtend gekomen is.

Dinsdag 8 juni heeft een geweldig partijlid het mogelijk gemaakt dat een miljoen lezers van de krant Metro op het laatste moment via een omslag om de krant op de hoogte zijn gebracht van het belang van een duurzame keuze. Dit heeft zeker meegespeeld in het behoud van onze twee zetels.

In Nederland zijn ook verkiezingen gehouden op basis- en middelbare scholen. Bij de verkiezingen van basisscholieren zijn we de derde partij van Nederland geworden met 21 zetels! En ook bij de middelbare scholieren scoorde we goed met 7 zetels. Een prachtige uitslag. Kinderen en jongeren vinden dieren, natuur en milieu gelukkig heel belangrijk. Met deze uitslagen gaan we een goede toekomst tegemoet.

Vorige week heb ik de nota ‘Verbod Onverdoofd Ritueel Slachten’ naar de Tweede Kamer gestuurd. Daarmee is de initiatiefwet “Verbod op het onverdoofd ritueel slachten” in de Tweede Kamer schriftelijk afgerond. Schokkende beelden laten zien hoe onverdoofd geslachte runderen, schapen en geiten zwaar lijden en ernstig mishandeld worden. De dieren worden onverdoofd geslacht voor de halal-markt. Hoewel de beelden in dit Worldlog afkomstig zijn van Belgische slachthuizen, zijn ze vergelijkbaar met de Nederlandse praktijk van het ritueel slachten. De beelden komen van de Belgische organisatie Gaia. De tekst is in het Nederlands, maar de beelden spreken voor zichzelf.

Jaarlijks wordt bij 2 miljoen dieren, met name kalveren, schapen en kippen, zonder verdoving de keel doorgesneden. Het ritueel slachten veroorzaakt onnodig veel stress, gebeurt vaak onoordeelkundig en zonder toezicht, aldus een verklaring van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Maatschappij voor Diergeneeskunde. De Partij voor de Dieren komt met een eigen initiatiefwetsvoorstel omdat demissionair minister Verburg van Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit keer op keer aangeeft niets te voelen voor een verbod op onverdoofd ritueel slachten.

Goed nieuws! De Europese Commissie heeft de vangst van blauwvintonijn in de Middellandse Zee en het oosten van de Atlantische Oceaan verboden. De Partij voor de Dieren is blij dat de vangst verboden is, omdat de blauwvintonijn met uitsterven wordt bedreigd. Nu nog hopen dat de blauwvintonijn erkend wordt als bedreigde diersoort en internationale bescherming krijgt. Helaas hebben Japan en andere Aziatische landen de pogingen van de Verenigde Naties om de blauwvintonijn officieel tot een bedreigde diersoort te bestempelen tot nu toe weten tegen te houden.

Nog even een leuk weetje: Het Engelstalige Boek Meat the Truth is vanaf 2 juni verkrijgbaar bij de Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation, ons wetenschappelijk bureau! Het boek ‘Meat the Truth, Essays on Livestock Production, Sustainability and Climate Change’ vormt het vervolg op de gelijknamige documentaire Meat the Truth was de eerste klimaatfilm waarin het verband tussen de veehouderij en de uitstoot van broeikasgassen werd belicht. De Engelstalige versie van de documentaire is als DVD-bijlage aan het boek toegevoegd. During the elections for the Lower Chamber last week, the Party for the Animals held onto its two seats, what a wonderful result! Dutch voters largely voted strategically and so gave some of our votes to the larger parties such as the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA), GroenLinks and the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). We did however manage to hold onto our two seats in the electoral storm. Despite the headwind, as it were, we have still proved to be a stable factor in Dutch politics. The VVD – a right wing liberal group is now the largest party and will therefore be the first to attempt to form a government. During his coming time in the Lower House, my colleague Esther Ouwehand and I will constantly remind VVD leader Mark Rutte of the 'green rights' promises he made.

Below are some photos of the cheerful election night during which the results took an age. I look forward to and stand with our fantastic employees and volunteers to the second seat that was finally awarded in the wee hours.

On Tuesday 8 June a wonderful party member made sure a million readers of the 'Metro' newspaper were informed of how important a sustainable choice is by placing an ad at the eleventh hour on the cover. This certainly played a role in keeping our two seats.

The Netherlands also held elections in primary and secondary schools. These elections placed us as the third largest party in the Netherlands with 21 seats! We also scored well in secondary schools with 7 seats. A wonderful result. Children and young people think that animals, nature and the environment are important. These results assure us a good result in the future.

Last week I sent the 'Ban Unanaesthetised Ritual Slaughter' bill to the Lower House. This caused the private member's bill 'Ban on unanaesthetised ritual slaughter' to be confirmed in writing in the Lower House. Shocking images where shown of the unanaesthetised slaughter of cows, sheep and goats that suffered greatly and were severely abused. Animals are killed without anaesthetic for the halal market. Although the images in this Worldlog are from Belgian slaughterhouses, they are comparable to Dutch ritual slaughter. The images from Belgian organisation 'Gaia'. Every year two million animals, particularly calves, sheep and chickens have their throats cut without anaesthetic. Ritual slaughter causes unnecessary stress, is often done improperly and without supervision according to a statement from the Royal Dutch Society for Veterinary Medicine (KNMvD). The Party for the Animals has initiated its own private member's bill proposal because outgoing Minister of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality – Minister Verburg proves time and time again that she does care about a ban on Unanaesthetised ritual slaughter.
Good news! The European Commission has banned catching Bluefin tuna in the Mediterranean Sea and in the eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean. The Party for the Animals is happy as the Bluefin tuna is facing extinction. We now have hope that the Bluefin tuna will be recognised as an endangered species and will gain international protected status. Unfortunately Japan and other Asian countries have up until now managed to hold back attempts to have the United Nation's efforts to officially declare the Bluefin tuna an endangered species.
