Single issue
Komende week zal duidelijk worden of de Partij voor de Dieren de eerste politieke partij ter wereld gaat worden die dieren, natuur en milieu centraal gaat stellen in een Europees Parlement. 4 juni zullen we het weten, ik bericht jullie er volgende week over.
Ook tijdens de gevoerde campagne voor het Europese Parlement kregen we weer veelvuldig het onterechte verwijt dat we een single issue partij zouden zijn.
Terwijl wij juist voortdurend stellen dat wij de enige partij zijn met een planeetbrede aanpak. We hebben er zelfs een commercial aan gewijd, waarin we laten zien dat we ons inderdaad maar met één ding bezig houden: de belangen van de aarde.

Het overstijgende belang dat aanhangers van de Partij voor de Dieren centraal stellen, stelt hen in staat om ondanks verschillende achtergronden gezamenlijk een vuist te maken tegen al het onrecht dat dieren wordt aangedaan.
Een overstijgend belang waarvan de mens evenveel profijt heeft als de mus, de kikker, de gorilla, het illegaal uitgezette edelhert, de muis in het proefdiercentrum of het fel bejaagde wilde zwijn.
Een overstijgend belang dat al het leven in ons ecosysteem verbindt en waarbij de zittende politiek eigenlijk degradeert tot one-issuepolitiek, het kleine denken over de belangen van de westerse mens en z’n geld. En dus loont het om dat overstijgend belang in twijfel te trekken voor iedereen die ongaarne ziet dat de Partij voor de Dieren succes heeft met haar missie.
Natuurlijk, de ene traditionele politieke partij slaagt er beter in dan de andere om af en toe ook over de eigen soortgrenzen heen te kijken. Maar de belangen van andere levende wezens dan mensen blijven voor de gevestigde politiek bijzaak.

Na twee jaar in het parlement vragen veel ongeduldige journalisten aan ons: ‘Wat heeft de Partij voor de Dieren de afgelopen twee jaren nou eigenlijk helemaal bereikt?’ Opmerkelijk is dat deze vraag nog nooit met zoveel ongeduld is gesteld aan de inmiddels tachtig jaar oude Nederlandse Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij, de sgp. Het is duidelijk dat de verwachtingen hoog gespannen zijn, of dat er sprake is van een hoge mate van scepsis. In elk geval is voor iedereen zichtbaar dat binnen twee jaar een diervriendelijker samenleving dichterbij gebracht is dan dat de SGP de staatkundig gereformeerde samenleving in tachtig jaar dichterbij heeft gebracht, en gelukkig ook maar.

Omdat we niet opereren vanuit de traditionele links-rechtstegenstelling, maar vanuit een overstijgend belang met een veel grotere reikwijdte, heeft de partij ook een onevenredig grote invloed. Meteen in het eerste debat na onze entree in het parlement werd al duidelijk dat de Partij voor de Dieren het beslissende gewicht in de schaal zou leggen bij de vraag of er wel of niet een generaal pardon moest komen voor asielzoekers die al te lang in de wachtkamer hadden gezeten. Ons standpunt in deze kwestie vloeide ondubbelzinnig voort uit ons partijprogramma, maar omdat het linkse en het rechtse blok in de kamer elkaar exact in evenwicht houden, konden onze twee stemmen de doorslag geven. Dat is bijzonder. Dat maakt onze inbreng zeer zichtbaar en belangrijk en zorgt er ook voor dat andere partijen niet naar ons kunnen kijken als naar ‘zomaar twee zetels’.
Politici van andere partijen hebben onze steun in veel gevallen nodig om een meerderheid te behalen, en dat geeft ons extra invloed, vooral ook op de thema’s die voor ons speerpunten vormen.
Als onderdeel van een emancipatiebeweging hebben we daarmee ook de mogelijkheid andere emancipatiebewegingen te steunen in hun strijd, zoals bijvoorbeeld die van de gelijkberechtiging van lesbische meemoeders en we hebben een stem in vraagstukken rond het homohuwelijk en weigerambtenaren.
Juist door weg te blijven van de oude politieke hokjesgeest, juist door los te staan van bestaande levensbeschouwelijke stromingen, juist door de scherpe scheiding tussen kerk en staat voor te staan, kan de Partij voor de Dieren het overstijgend belang blijvend op het hoogste politieke niveau representeren. Iedereen die op wil komen voor dieren, natuur en milieu en daarmee ook voor een duurzame toekomst voor de mens, kan zich thuis voelen binnen de Partij voor de Dieren.
We zijn inmiddels de snelst groeiende politieke partij in ledenaantal, we halen successen binnen zoals meer geld voor alternatieven voor dierproeven, een verbod op de verrijkte kooi voor leghennen en het tot stand brengen van een transitie naar een meer plantaardige samenleving. En we vormen floodlight voor de woordvoerders van andere politieke partijen die meer ruimte in hun fracties krijgen om op te komen voor dieren, louter door onze aanwezigheid en de electorale dreiging die daarvan uitgaat.

We zijn een Big Issue partij, en dat kunnen weinig andere partijen zeggen!

This week we will find out if the Party for the Animals will be the first political party in the world that focuses on animals, nature and environment to win seats in the European Parliament. D-Day is 4 June, I will update you all next week.
We were often incorrectly accused of being a single issue party when we were running for European Parliament
whereas in reality we continuously state that we are the only party to take a planet-wide approach. We even dedicated a television commercial to the theme in which we showed that we are indeed focusing on one thing: the interests of the earth.

The Party for the Animals adherents focus on one overriding interest, which means they are able to come together to fight against injustice to animals despite their different backgrounds.
This overriding interest benefits people just as much as any sparrow, frog, gorilla, illegally expelled American elk, test subject mouse or viciously hunted wild boar.
This overriding interest connects all the life in our ecosystem. It is actually the incumbent politicians who reduce this to single issue politics – they only care about westerners and their money. It is therefore worth while for everyone who spites the Party for the Animals their success in this mission to call this overriding interest into question.
Some parties can of course look beyond the interests of their own species better than others, but still the interests of other living creatures remain to most established politicians a political detail of secondary importance.

Once we had been in parliament for two years, many impatient journalists asked us: ‘What has the Party for the Animals actually achieved these past two years?’ We find it interesting that this question has never been asked with as much impatience of the eighty-year old Netherlands Reformed Political Party (Nederlandse Staatkundig Gereformeerde Partij, SGP). Either expectations are obviously running high, or we are dealing here with a very high level of scepticism. At any rate is clear to see that we have brought the Netherlands closer to being an animal-friendly society in two years than the SGP has bought the Netherlands closer to being a politically reformed society in eighty years – and it is just as well.

Because we do not operate from the traditional position of right against left, but from a position of overriding interest that covers much more than other political parties, the Party for the Animals enjoys a disproportionate amount of influence. al parties, the Psparties, the Psom a position of overriding interstinel of scpimals, nature and environment to wi It was obvious from our first debate after entering parliament that the Party for the Animals held the deciding vote in the question of whether or not asylum seekers who had been left too long without having their cases processed should be given free access to the Netherlands. Our standpoint in this issue was unambiguously represented in our manifesto, and because the left and right blocks had each other at a stand-off, our two votes decided the issue. That is a special position to occupy. It makes our input is highly visible and significant and it ensures that other parties see us as so much more than 'just two seats'.
Politicians from other parties often need our support in order to have the majority, giving us extra power – especially where the Party’s key issues are concerned.
We are part of an emancipation movement so we take the opportunity to support other emancipation movements, such as the fight for equal rights by lesbian co-parents (a woman who parents a child with their partner but who did not bear the child themselves) and we make our voices heard in questions surrounding gay marriage and its denialists.
Because we avoid political parochialism, because we stand apart from existing ideological trends, and because we stand for a definitive separation of church and state, the Party for the Animals can keep represent our overriding interest at the highest political level. Anyone who wants to take a stand for animals, nature and the environment, thereby ensuring a sustainable future for humans, has a place within the Party for the Animals.
We are currently the political party with the fastest growing political base, we are fighting and winning for alternatives to animal testing, a ban on battery eggs and creating a transition towards a more plant-based society. We shine the spotlight on representatives from other political parties that create the space within their ranks to let others make a stand for animals too, something that our mere presence in parliament, and the electoral threat that carries, has effected.

We are a 'Big Issue' party – not very many other parties can say the same!
