Worldlog Week 20 – 2010

Het is gelukt om de wereldberoemde primatoloog Marc van Roosmalen weer een Nederlands paspoort te geven. Een geweldige opluchting voor een bijzondere onderzoeker die van grote waarde is voor het in kaart brengen en behouden van de biodiversiteit in het Amazonegebied!We hebben bij herhaling vragen over de kwestie gesteld in het parlement en regionale afdelingen van de Partij voor de Dieren zijn eind 2009 een lobby en een petitie gestart om druk uit te oefenen op de Nederlandse regering om de bioloog zijn Nederlands paspoort terug te geven. Van Roosmalen was in de problemen geraakt nadat hij in Brazilië in 2007 was opgepakt en gevangengezet op beschuldigingen van ‘biopiraterij’ en het zonder vergunning houden van weesapen.

Volgens de milieuactivist wilde de overheid, onder druk van projectontwikkelaars en de houtkapindustrie ‘van hem af’. Hij vreesde voor zijn leven. In 2008 sprak het hoger gerechtshof in Brazilië hem gedeeltelijk vrij en in 2009 vluchtte hij naar Nederland. Sinds Brazilië in 2007 zijn Braziliaans paspoort heeft ingenomen was hij ‘statenloos’, omdat hij zich tien jaar eerder had laten naturaliseren tot Braziliaan.Van Roosmalen wil met zijn nieuwe paspoort terug naar Brazilië om een documentaire te maken over de genocide op Indianen in het Amazonegebied. Deze onderneming wordt minstens zo gevaarlijk geacht als het ageren tegen de kap van het Amazonewoud en de corruptie van de lokale overheid. Maar met zijn Nederlandse paspoort kan Van Roosmalen gelukkig rekenen op betere bescherming.

De wereldpremière van Sea the Truth, de nieuwe film van het wetenschappelijke bureau van de Partij voor de Dieren, de Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation (NGPF) was vorige week een daverend succes. Wat een indrukwekkende film! Ruim 700 bezoekers zagen het schrille contrast tussen de schoonheid van het onderwaterleven en de verwoesting die menselijke activiteiten daarin aanrichten. Visbestanden zijn in honderd jaar tijd verdwenen of bijna verdwenen. Maar nog steeds halen we jaarlijks honderd miljoen ton vis uit de oceanen en zeeën.

Toonaangevende wetenschappers zoals prof dr. Daniel Pauly geven aan dat als we in het huidige tempo vis blijven vangen en eten, de oceanen en zeeën binnen 40 jaar leeggevist zullen zijn. De oplossing wordt door overheden gezocht in duurzame visserijprojecten. Maar steeds meer wetenschappers zeggen dat iedere vis die nu uit de oceaan wordt gehaald, er één te veel is. Met deze documentaire wordt aangetoond dat er helaas geen ‘verantwoorde’ vis meer bestaat op dit moment. De visserijsector en sommige Nederlandse onderzoekers reageren wat badinerend, maar dit is wat de verenigde Naties deze week bekend maakten.

We lopen ver voor de muziek uit, net als met Meat the Truth, maar inmiddels vinden 6 kamerfracties dat de intensieve veehouderij moet worden afgeschaft en hebben Groenlinks, Christenunie, PvdA en D66 vleesmatiging opgenomen in hun plannen. Zo zal het ook gaan met de uitkomsten van deze nieuwe film die vanaf morgen al de wereld over zal gaan. De eerste aanvraag is binnen uit Brazilië en andere landen zullen snel volgen!

Nog een mooi succes: Nederland gaat uit het Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project stappen, met steun van onder meer de Partij voor de Dieren bleek daar een kleine Kamermeerderheid voor! De Partij voor de Dieren wil niet dat de JSF straaljagers worden aangeschaft, maar dat Defensie doorvliegt met een afgeslankte en gemoderniseerde vloot van de F16 straaljagers.

A Dutch passport has again been successfully arranged for the world-famous primatologist Marc van Roosmalen. This is a huge relief for a special researcher who is doing so much to identify and preserve the biodiversity in the Amazon! We repeatedly asked questions in parliament about the issue and in late 2009 the regional departments of the Party for the Animals started lobbying and began a petition to pressure the government to return the biologist's Dutch passport to him. Van Roosmalen landed in trouble after he was arrested and imprisoned in Brazil in 2007 on accusations of 'bio piracy' and keeping orphan monkeys without a licence.

According to the environmental activist, the government, pressured by project developers and the logging industry, wants to be ‘rid of him’. He feared for his life. In 2008, Brazil’s supreme court partially acquitted him and in 2009 he fled to the Netherlands. Since Brazil had stripped him of his Brazilian passport in 2007, he had become ‘stateless’. Van Roosmalen had become a naturalized Brazilian citizen ten years earlier. Van Roosmalen wants to return to Brazil with his new passport to make a documentary about the genocide of the Indians in the Amazon region. This undertaking is seen as at least as dangerous as agitating against logging in the Amazon and the corruption of the local authorities. With his Dutch passport, Van Roosmalen can fortunately count on better protection.

Last week’s world premiere of Sea the Truth, the new film from the scientific bureau of the Party for the Animals, the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation (NGPF), was a great success. What an impressive film! More than 700 people saw the sharp contrast between the beauty of life under water and the destruction human activity is wreaking upon it. In a century, fish stocks have disappeared or all but disappeared. And yet each year we continue to harvest a hundred million tonnes of fish from our seas and oceans.

Prominent scientists such as Prof. Daniel Pauly warn that if we continue to catch and eat fish at the current rate, the seas and oceans will be empty within 40 years' time. Governments are searching for the solution in sustainable fishery projects. But ever more scientists are saying that every fish taken from the ocean is one too many. This documentary shows us that currently there is no such thing as 'responsible' fishing. While the fishing industry and some Dutch researchers have responded in scoffing tones, this is what the United Nations announced this week.

As with the film Meat the Truth, we are way ahead of the curve. However, six parliamentary parties have since called for an end to intensive cattle raising and Groenlinks, Christenunie, PvdA and D66 have included reduced meat consumption in their plans. We expect this new film, which will be released all over the world from tomorrow, to have a similar effect. The first request for the film has come from Brazil and other countries will follow quickly!

Another success story: the Netherlands has decided to withdraw from the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project. There is a small parliamentary majority – thanks in part to the Party for the Animals – in favour of withdrawal! The Party for the Animals is against the purchase of the JSF jet fighters and in favour of continuing with slimmed down and modernized fleet of F16 jet fighters.
