Marc van Roosmalen, primatologo famoso in tutto il mondo, ha di nuovo ottenuto la cittadinanza olandese. E’ un grande sollievo per questo ricercatore speciale che ha un valore importante per la mappatura e conservazione della biodiversità dell’Amazonia! Abbiamo ripetutamente fatto delle domande nel parlamento e i dipartimenti regionali del Partito per gli Animali hanno cominiciato nel 2009 una petizione per premere il governo olandese per ridare la cittadinanza al biologo. Van Roosmalen aveva avuto dei problemi dopo essere arrestato ed incarcerato in Brasile nel 2007, accusato di fare il “biopirate” e di tenere delle scimmie orfane senza licenza.

Secondo l’attivista per l’ambiente il governo si voleva liberare di lui, pressato anche dagli imprenditori edilizi e l’industria di taglialegna. Aveva paura di non sopravivere. Nel 2008 il tribunale del Brasile lo ha dichiarato parzialmente innocente e nel 2009 è fugito per i Paesi Bassi. Da quando il Brasile gli ha confiscato il passaporte nel 2007, lui era senza cittadinanza, poiché aveva preso la cittadinanza brasiliana dieci anni prima. Van Roosmalen vuole tornare in Brasile con il nuovo passaporte olandese per fare un docmentario sulla genocida degli indiani nell’Amazonia. Questo progetto sarà forse più pericoloso ancora rispetto a quello di prima che consisteva di agire contro la taglialegna della foresta dell’Amazonia e la corruzione del governo locale. Ma in possesso della cittadinanza olandese fortunatamente Van Roosmalen potrà contare su una protezione migliore.

La première mondiale di Sea the Truth, il nuovo film dell’istituto scientifico del Partito per gli Animali, La Fondazione Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation (NGPF), della settimana scorsa è stata un grande successo. Quanto impressione ha fatto questo film! Più di 700 persone hanno visto il contrasto tra la bellezza della vita marina e quanto l’uomo lo distrugge con le sue attività. Le quantità di pesci sono calate fino a quasi zero nel periodo di cento anni. Ciònonostante peschiamo cento millioni di tonnellate dagli oceani all’anno.

Scienzati importanti come ad esempio il Prof. Daniel Pauly hanno indicato che, se continuamo le attuali pratiche di pesca, entro 40 anni gli oceani saranno privi di pesce. I governi cercano la soluzione in progetti durevoli di pesca. Ma gli scienziati dicono che ogni pesce pescato dall’oceano è troppo. Questo documentario dimostra che purtroppo non esiste più la pesca a rata accettabile. Il settore della pesca ed alcuni ricercatori olandesi hanno ricevuto le notizie in modo scettico, ma questo è quello che ha pubblicato la United Nations questa settimana.

Ci vorrà pazienza, come anche con il film “Meat the truth”, ma intanto vi sono sei partiti nel governo che sono convinti che l’allevamento bestiame va abolito. Quattro partiti hanno messo nel loro programma la diminuizione del consumo di carne. Questo secondo film, che sarà divulgato nel mondo da domani, avrà lo stesso impatto. E’ già arrivata la prima richiesta dal Brasile e gli altri paesi seguiranno presto!

Un altro bel successo: i Paesi Bassi si ritirano dal progetto Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). Con l’aggiunta di anche il Partito per gli Animali, si è appena formata una maggioranza nella camera! Il Partito per gli Animali non vuole che vengano comperate le caccie a reazione, ma che si continui con una flotta minore e modernizzata di caccie a reazione del tipo F16.

A Dutch passport has again been successfully arranged for the world-famous primatologist Marc van Roosmalen. This is a huge relief for a special researcher who is doing so much to identify and preserve the biodiversity in the Amazon! We repeatedly asked questions in parliament about the issue and in late 2009 the regional departments of the Party for the Animals started lobbying and began a petition to pressure the government to return the biologist's Dutch passport to him. Van Roosmalen landed in trouble after he was arrested and imprisoned in Brazil in 2007 on accusations of 'bio piracy' and keeping orphan monkeys without a licence.

According to the environmental activist, the government, pressured by project developers and the logging industry, wants to be ‘rid of him’. He feared for his life. In 2008, Brazil’s supreme court partially acquitted him and in 2009 he fled to the Netherlands. Since Brazil had stripped him of his Brazilian passport in 2007, he had become ‘stateless’. Van Roosmalen had become a naturalized Brazilian citizen ten years earlier. Van Roosmalen wants to return to Brazil with his new passport to make a documentary about the genocide of the Indians in the Amazon region. This undertaking is seen as at least as dangerous as agitating against logging in the Amazon and the corruption of the local authorities. With his Dutch passport, Van Roosmalen can fortunately count on better protection.

Last week’s world premiere of Sea the Truth, the new film from the scientific bureau of the Party for the Animals, the Nicolaas G. Pierson Foundation (NGPF), was a great success. What an impressive film! More than 700 people saw the sharp contrast between the beauty of life under water and the destruction human activity is wreaking upon it. In a century, fish stocks have disappeared or all but disappeared. And yet each year we continue to harvest a hundred million tonnes of fish from our seas and oceans.

Prominent scientists such as Prof. Daniel Pauly warn that if we continue to catch and eat fish at the current rate, the seas and oceans will be empty within 40 years' time. Governments are searching for the solution in sustainable fishery projects. But ever more scientists are saying that every fish taken from the ocean is one too many. This documentary shows us that currently there is no such thing as 'responsible' fishing. While the fishing industry and some Dutch researchers have responded in scoffing tones, this is what the United Nations announced this week.

As with the film Meat the Truth, we are way ahead of the curve. However, six parliamentary parties have since called for an end to intensive cattle raising and Groenlinks, Christenunie, PvdA and D66 have included reduced meat consumption in their plans. We expect this new film, which will be released all over the world from tomorrow, to have a similar effect. The first request for the film has come from Brazil and other countries will follow quickly!

Another success story: the Netherlands has decided to withdraw from the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) project. There is a small parliamentary majority – thanks in part to the Party for the Animals – in favour of withdrawal! The Party for the Animals is against the purchase of the JSF jet fighters and in favour of continuing with slimmed down and modernized fleet of F16 jet fighters.
