Worldlog Week 11 – 2008

Welkom op mijn eerste Worldlog! Ik zal me eerst even voorstellen.Mijn naam is Marianne Thieme, en ik ben fractievoorzitter van de Partij voor de Dieren in het Nederlandse parlement. Nederland is het meest vee-dichte land ter wereld. Na een groot aantal dierziektencrises, werd Nederland ook het eerste land ter wereld met een politieke partij die niet primair opkomt voor de korte termijn belangen van mensen. Op 22 november 2006 werden we met 2 zetels gekozen in het Nederlandse parlement en in 2007 is onze vertegenwoordiging uitgebreid met 9 zetels in Provinciale Staten en 1 zetel in de senaat. Omdat we pioniers zijn in de exclusieve politieke belangenbehartiging voor dieren, natuur en milieu, en omdat we heel veel vragen krijgen vanuit het buitenland over onze werkwijze en resultaten, wil ik graag wekelijks in zoveel mogelijk talen verslag doen via mijn Worldlog.

We beginnen vandaag met een team van 24 mensen in 9 talen en dat aantal zal naar verwachting groeien in de komende maanden. De belangstelling zal ook aangewakkerd worden omdat het wetenschappelijk bureau van de Partij voor de Dieren deze zomer een documentaire uitbrengt, getiteld Meat the Truth. Hierin wordt aandacht gevraagd voor het feit dat de veehouderij wereldwijd meer broeikasgassen uitstoot dan alle auto’s, trucks, treinen, boten en vliegtuigen. De Nederlandse versie van deze documentaire die in december werd uitgebracht heeft al heel veel maatschappelijk debat (en waardering) opgeleverd.

De toonaangevende Nederlandse krant NRC Handelsblad schreef in een recensie dat de film beter zou zijn dan An Inconvenient Truth van Al Gore! [lees hier Engelstalige recensie]

De film zal deze zomer te zien zijn in onder meer Sao Paulo, Madrid, Brussel, Fortaleza, New York, Londen, Dresden, Peking, Singapore ,Taipei en Sydney en tal van Nederlandse plaatsen. Mail voor informatie over vertoningsdata in het engels naar info@ngpf.nl

Deze week was ik in Cambridge om opnamen te maken voor de internationale versie van Meat the Truth, ik heb daar gesproken met John Powles van Cambridge University die onlangs in de Lancet een pleidooi hield voor een drastische vermindering van de vleesconsumptie. Beter voor de dieren, beter voor het klimaat, beter voor de wereldvoedselverdeling en beter voor de volksgezondheid!

Komende weken zullen in het teken staan van de opname van de film ( 6 april in Amsterdam) en de montage ervan. Dat zal een druk programma opleveren naast het werk in het parlement.

Deze week debatteerden we over onze bezwaren tegen het opheffen van het moratorium op de walvisjacht. Wij zijn faliekant tegen het opheffen van een vangstverbod, maar de christendemocratische minister Verburg van (Landbouw, Natuur en Voedselkwaliteit hield in het parlement een pleidooi om de jacht op walvissen “een beetje” toe te staan, omdat ze beweert dat zo de walvisjagers eerder te bewegen zijn om de walvis te beschermen. Zo zien wij dat dus helemaal niet en gelukkig lijkt een meerderheid van het Nederlandse parlement dat met ons eens te zijn: handen af van de walvis! Deze week spraken we ook over een initiatiefwet om sex met dieren strafbaar te stellen, een voorstel van de sociaal democratische partij die moeite heeft z’n diervriendelijke verkiezingsbeloften in te lossen en dus maar koos voor dit tamelijk ‘gevaarloze’ onderwerp.

Natuurlijk zijn we als Partij voor de Dieren tegen elke vorm van misbruik van dieren, maar dit is toch wel een zuivere vorm van symboolpolitiek. Het wetsvoorstel is ingediend door de sociaal democratische parlementariër, Harm Evert Waalkens, die tevens boer is. We hebben ‘m tijdens het debat gevraagd of zijn wetsvoorstel nu vooral betrekking heeft op het beschermen van de seksuele integriteit van dieren of in het beschermen van de ‘goede zeden’ c.q. het aanpakken van viezeriken.

Als het namelijk de seksuele integriteit van dieren is die hem zorgen zou baren, zou hij logischerwijs ook ernstig bezwaar moeten hebben tegen kunstmatige inseminatie van koeien op grote schaal, het (onverdoofd) castreren van miljoenen biggen en de sexe discriminatie die ervoor zorgt dat 50% van alle kuikentjes levend versnipperd wordt, louter omdat mannetjes niet interessant zijn voor de vlees- en eiersector. Z’n antwoord was duidelijk: hij probeert vooral de goede zeden van mensen te beschermen en dat dat goed is voor sommige dieren is mooi meegenomen, vindt hij. Hij durft z’n vingers echter niet te branden aan het daadwerkelijk respecteren van de seksuele integriteit van álle dieren, omdat grote economische belangen zich daartegen verzetten. En dus is er sprake van maar een héél klein stapje vooruit, zonder dat de rechten van dieren werkelijk erkend worden.

Onze zusterpartij in Spanje, de Pacma haalde afgelopen week 41.000 stemmen, een prachtig begin in een land als Spanje waar sprake is van zulk grootschalig dierenleed!

Komende weken zal ik je graag verder informeren over onze partij, onze vertegenwoordigers en onze werkzaamheden en plannen.

Ik hoop dat deze Worldlog ertoe bijdraagt dat heel veel mensen overal ter wereld zich geïnspireerd zullen voelen om ook Partijen voor de Dieren op te richten, om de belangen van dieren, natuur en milieu te verdedigen tegen de enige levende soort op aarde die z’n eigen leefomgeving vernietigt: de mens.

Welcome to my first Worldlog! First, let me introduce myself. My name is Marianne Thieme and I am the parliamentary party chairperson of the Party for the Animals in the Dutch Parliament. The Netherlands is the most densely populated country in the world when it comes to cattle. After a great number of animal disease crises, the Netherlands became the first country in the world to have a political party whose primary purpose was something other than the short term interests of humans. On 22 November 2006, we won our first two seats in the Dutch Parliament. In 2007, our representation expanded with nine seats in the Provincial States and one seat in the Senate. We hold a pioneering position in the exclusive political representation of the interests of animals, nature and the environment. As such, we receive countless questions from abroad regarding our methods and results, so I would like to report weekly in my Worldlog in as many languages as possible.

We are starting today with a team of 24 people in nine languages, a number which is expected to increase in the coming months. Interest will also be boosted by the release this summer of Meat the Truth, a documentary created by the scientific bureau of the Party for the Animals. The film highlights the fact that cattle farming creates more greenhouse gases worldwide than all automobiles, trucks, trains, boats and airplanes combined. The Dutch version of the documentary was released in December and has generated much public debate (and appreciation).

The influential Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad wrote in a review that the film could be better than An Inconvenient Truth from Al Gore! [Read the English version of the review here]

The film can be seen this summer in numerous cities worldwide including Sao Paulo, Madrid, Brussels, Fortaleza, New York, London, Dresden, Peking, Singapore, Taipei and Sydney, as well as across the Netherlands. Mail for screening dates to info@ngpf.nl.

This week I was in Cambridge, England for the filming of the international version of Meat the Truth. While there, I spoke with John Powles from Cambridge University who recently argued in the Lancet
for a drastic reduction of meat consumption. Better for the animals, better for the climate, better for the world food distribution and better for public health!

The coming weeks will be filled with the filming (6 April in Amsterdam) and editing of the documentary. That means quite a full schedule on top of the work in the Parliament. This week, we debated over our objections against stopping the moratorium on whale hunting. We are absolutely against lifting the moratorium on whaling; but the Christian democratic Minister of Agriculture Gerda Verburg argued in the Parliament to allow “a bit” of whaling. She believes by doing so the whalers would more easily agree to protect the whales. We do not agree with her standpoint whatsoever and, fortunately, the majority of the Dutch Parliament agrees with us: hands off the whales!
This week, we also discussed the legislative proposal to make sex with animals punishable by law. This is a proposal initiated by the social democratic party who is experiencing difficulty keeping to its animal-friendly election promises and so has chosen for a relatively “harmless” subject.

Naturally, the Party for the Animals is against every form of animal abuse, but this is clearly a form of symbolic politics. Member of Parliament Harm Evert Waalkens, who is also a farmer, introduced the proposal. During the debate, we asked if he intended his proposal more for the protection of the sexual integrity of animals or for the protection of “good morals,” as in catching perverts.

Were it the sexual integrity of animals that concerned him, then logic would imply that he would also object to other such animal abuses. To name a few, the large-scale artificial insemination of cows, the castration of millions of pigs (without anaesthesia) and the sex discrimination that permits 50% of all chicks to be shredded alive simply because the males are not useful for meat and egg production. His answer was clear: he is trying to protect the good morals of people and if it happens that some good comes out of that for some animals, then that is fine too. He would not dare burn his fingers on actually respecting the sexual integrity of all animals because there would be too much resistance from large economic interests. Thus, we witness only a very small step forward without the rights of animals truly being recognised.

Our sister party in Spain, de Pacma received 41,000 votes in last week’s elections. This is a brilliant start in a country like Spain, where there is so much animal suffering on such a large scale!

The coming weeks, I will gladly inform you more about our party, our representatives, our activities and plans.

I hope this Worldlog will inspire people around the world to establish a Party for the Animals to defend the interests of animals, nature and the environment against the only species on Earth that destroys its own environment: the human species.
