Deze week vond het Symposium Animal Politics: Theory and Practice plaats in Istanbul. Het waren twee inspirerende dagen met sprekers én bezoekers van over de hele wereld. Onder meer gastland Turkije, Kosovo, Australië, Canada, de Verenigde Staten, Frankrijk, Israël, Zweden, Servië, Georgië, het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Marokko en Tunesië waren vertegenwoordigd. Het symposium is georganiseerd door onze eigen Animal Politics Foundation.

Ik vond het enorm inspirerend om zoveel mensen te ontmoeten die zich met hart en ziel inzetten om dieren een stem te geven in de politiek. Mijn collega’s van partijen voor dieren uit Turkije, Australië en Portugal gaven, net als ikzelf, een lezing over de rol van hun partij in het politiek-maatschappelijke veld in hun land. Het is interessant om te zien dat er zoveel overeenkomsten zijn. En geweldig om te merken dat onze Nederlandse partij zo’n voorbeeld is voor dierenbeschermers over de hele wereld. Ook Maneka Gandhi uit India gaf een presentatie. Zij is een vooraanstaand dierenbeschermer en was de eerste minister voor Dierenwelzijn in India. Een bijzonder persoon en een inspiratie voor ons allemaal.

Behalve politici waren er ook veel bijdragen van wetenschappers. Goed om te merken dat er vanuit die hoek ook veel aandacht is voor Animal Politics. Het is belangrijk – en werkt versterkend – dat er een wisselwerking is tussen de theorie en de praktijk van deze emancipatiebeweging. De grondlegger van de dierenrechtenbeweging, de Amerikaanse filosoof Tom Regan, gaf een zeer boeiende lezing. Hij vond het bijzonder om bij een bijeenkomst te zijn waar zoveel mensen bij elkaar waren die de dierenrechten vertalen naar de politieke praktijk. Er waren onder meer drie onderzoekers van het Center voor Animals and Social Justice aanwezig. Verder gaven onder meer professor Will Kymlicka, Maartje Janse en professor Paul Cliteur een lezing. This week the Animal Politics Symposium: Theory and Practice was held in Istanbul. It were two inspiring days with lecturers and visitors from all over the world. The host country Turkey, Kosovo, Australia, Canada, the United States, France, Israel, Sweden, Serbia, Georgia, the United Kingdom, Morocco and Tunisia were among the countries represented at the symposium, which was organised by our own Animal Politics Foundation.

I found it enormously inspiring to meet so many people who are devoting heart and soul to giving animals a voice in politics. My colleagues of the parties for the animals in Turkey, Australia and Portugal held a lecture, like I did, on the role of their party in the political social-field in their home country. It’s interesting to see that there are so many resemblances. And it is great to notice that our Dutch party is a good example for animal protectors all over the world. Maneka Gandhi from India also gave a presentation. She is a prominent animal protector and was the first minister for Animal Welfare in India. A very special person and an inspiration to us all.

Apart from politicians there were also many contributions from scientists. It’s good to see that there is much attention for Animal Politics from the scientific corner. It’s important – and encouraging – that there is an interaction between the theory and practice of this emancipation movement. The founder of the animal rights movement, the American philosopher Tom Regan held a very fascinating lecture. He thought that it was great to be at a gathering where there were so many people who put animal rights into political practice. Three researchers of the Center for Animals and Social Justice also attended the symposium. And Professor Will Kymlicka, Maartje Janse and Professor Paul Cliteur were among the people who held a lecture. Have a look at the full programme here.
