Veel goed nieuws uit het parlement deze week! Ten eerste komt er eindelijk een verbod op pijnlijke ingrepen bij kippen, hanen en kalkoenen dankzij een aangenomen motie van ons. Nu nog knippen boeren jaarlijks de snavels af van 56 miljoen kippen en kalkoenen en worden bij alle haantjes hun sporen, kammen en achterste delen van de tenen verwijderd! De ingrepen worden helaas niet meteen afgeschaft, maar het verbod wordt geleidelijk ingevoerd tussen 2015 en 2021.

De kippen worden zo dicht op elkaar gehouden dat de boer de dieren moet verminken om een bloedbad te voorkomen. Wij vinden dat de kippen niet moeten worden aangepast aan de manier waarop zij gehouden worden, maar de stallen moeten worden aangepast aan het natuurlijk gedrag van de kippen.

Ten tweede heeft een meerderheid van de Kamer een motie aangenomen voor het opnemen van strengere regels voor hobbyfokkers van honden in de Wet Dieren. De Kamer wil dat niet alleen beroepsfokkers, maar ook de hobbyfokkers onder strengere regels gaan vallen. Dit is een belangrijke wijziging in de wet, omdat juist de hobbyfokkers fors bijdragen aan inteelt en extreme uiterlijke eigenschappen die het welzijn van dieren onaanvaardbaar aantasten.

Volgens deskundigen worden bijna alle hondenrassen geboren met ernstige aangeboren afwijkingen: 90 procent van de cavaliers, golden retrievers en Duitse herders lijdt aan epilepsie of hartfalen. Tenminste 40 procent van de rashonden krijgt te maken met een erfelijk gebrek in de eerste helft van zijn leven. Gelukkig gaan we daar nu eindelijk iets aan doen!

En ten derde is onze motie voor een verbod op de verkoop van bestrijdingsmiddelen die neonicotinoïden bevatten aangenomen. Dit gif is gevaarlijk voor bijen en andere bestuivers zoals hommels en draagt bij aan de massale bijensterfte. Deze motie pleit voor een verbod op de verkoop van bestrijdingsmiddelen aan particulieren. Daarmee mogen ook producten zoals vlooienbandjes en mierenmiddelen waar het middel imidacloprid in zit niet meer verkocht worden. Dit is een passend filmpje bij onze motie voor een verbod op bestrijdingsmiddelen. Laat prachtig zien waarom we ons zo druk maken om bestrijdingsmiddelen- en GMO- gigant Monsanto. GMO a go go!

‘Plundering the Planet’: Het nieuwe rapport van de Club van Rome is uit, ze roeien al sinds de jaren 70 tegen de stroom in en blijven dat doen. Zoals Ugo Bardi (professor aan de universiteit van Florence) aangeeft: ‘De menselijke beschaving kan alleen voortbestaan als we onze meest verspillende gewoontes achter ons laten’.

Ook in Israël wordt dierenwelzijn een steeds belangrijker issue, zelfs bij een grote vleesproducent die de uitspraak ‘Slaughtering by its very nature causes the animals great suffering’ deed.

In Afrika worden leeuwen opgefokt om te worden afgeschoten door kapitaalkrachtige hobbyjagers, helaas komen deze jagers ook uit Nederland. Zie de aflevering van Louis Theroux ‘African Hunting Holiday’ om te zien hoe bizar de jachtreizen zijn. En The Guardian maakte een recente update over ‘canned hunting’.

Much good news from the parliament this week! First of all, the painful alterations of chickens, cocks and turkeys will finally be banned thanks to the adoption of our motion. Farmers currently still cut off the beaks of 56 millions of chickens and turkeys each year, and all cocks have their spurs, combs and the rear ends of their toes removed. Unfortunately, the alterations will not be immediately banned but the ban will be gradually implemented between 2015 and 2021.

The chickens are kept so closely packed together that the farmer has no other option than to mutilate the animals to prevent a blood bath. We believe that the chickens should not be adapted to the way in which they are kept but that the stables should be adapted to the natural behaviour of the chickens.

Secondly, a majority of the House has adopted a motion to amend the Animals Act and bring in stricter rules for hobby dog breeders. The House doesn’t only want professional breeders but also hobby breeders to meet stricter rules. This is an important amendment to the Act, because it is in fact the hobby breeders who strongly contribute to the inbreeding and the extreme external characteristics which affect the welfare of animals in an unacceptable way.

According to experts, almost all breeds of dogs are born with serious congenital anomalies: 90 percent of all cavaliers, golden retrievers and German shepherds suffer from epilepsy or heart failure. At least 40 percent of pedigree dogs encounter hereditary defects in the first half of their lives. Fortunately, we are now going to tackle this!

And thirdly, our motion to ban the sale of pesticides that contain neonicotinoids. This poison is dangerous for bees and other pollinators, such as bumblebees, and is contributing to the massive death of bees. This motion pleads for a ban on the sale of pesticides to private persons. Additionally, products such as flea collars and ant pesticides containing the substance imidacloprid may no longer be sold. This film is suitable to demonstrate our motion to ban pesticides. It perfectly shows why we are so concerned about pesticides and GMO Giant Monsanto. GMO a go go!
