Nieuw Worldlog Marianne Thieme

De bijna 100.000 m2 natuur waarop we samen hoogste bieder zijn, zijn ons gegund door Staatsbosbeheer. We zijn de eerste partij in de geschiedenis die een stukje Nederland heeft vrijgekocht om te beschermen tegen falend overheidsbeleid! Meer over deze actie kan je lezen in mijn vorige Worldlogs.

Afgelopen zaterdag vonden in de hele wereld protesten plaats onder de noemer March Against Monsanto. Ook in Nederland zijn goedbezochte manifestaties gehouden onder andere in Amsterdam en Wageningen. Veel van onze leden waren er bij. Monsanto is monopolist op het gebied van genetisch gemanipuleerde zaden en bestrijdingsmiddelen. Wij verzetten ons al jaren tegen bedrijven als Monsanto en ondersteunden deze March Against Monsanto dan ook van harte!

Genetische manipulatie van planten en zaden vormt een drastische breuk met de wijze waarop organismen zich normaal voortplanten. Het tast niet alleen de integriteit van planten aan, maar vormt ook potentieel grote risico’s voor hun voortbestaan en het ecosysteem. Genetisch gemanipuleerde planten kunnen hun natuurlijke soortgenoten verdringen en zo het ecosysteem ontwrichten. Daarnaast gaat teelt van gentechgewassen gepaard met een groot gebruik van landbouwgif en kunstmest en werkt ontbossing in de hand. Ook blijkt dat multinationals (zoals Monsanto) die gengewassen op de markt brengen hun macht misbruiken ten nadelen van boeren.

Wij willen dat er op basis van het voorzorgsprincipe een einde komt aan de toelating van gentechgewassen voor teelt en import in Europa, en willen voorkomen dat er in Nederland gentechgewassen geteeld worden!

Ik heb vorige week nog Kamervragen gesteld over een nieuw televisieprogramma waarin te zien is dat slangen in een bak met ijskoud water worden gegooid. Het is zichtbaar dat de slangen enorme stress hebben. Het is zorgelijk dat mensen kiezen voor barbarij, alleen maar om daarmee hoge kijkcijfers te bereiken. Dieren zullen als levende wezens met bewustzijn en gevoel en met respect en zorgvuldigheid behandeld moeten worden. Gelukkig is De Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) inmiddels een strafrechtelijk onderzoek begonnen naar dierenmishandeling in het tv-programma!

Vorige week is een rapport uitgekomen van een onderzoeksbureau in Nederland waaruit blijkt dat in de intensieve veehouderij massaal dierenwelzijnswetten worden overtreden. Bovendien maakt het rapport pijnlijk duidelijk dat de bio-industrie in ons land een grote bedreiging vormt voor de natuur en de biodiversiteit. De bio-industrie is niet duurzaam, en zal dat ook nooit kunnen worden. De weinige regels waar deze sector zich aan moet houden worden massaal overtreden. Naast kwetsbare natuur is er simpelweg geen ruimte voor het houden van miljoenen dieren. De veestapel zal met meer dan de helft moeten inkrimpen, en het toezicht op de bio-industrie moet per direct weer in overheidshanden komen.

Vooral de weinige regels die er zijn in ons land voor het welzijn van de 44.500.000 plofkippen die er worden gehouden, worden ronduit slecht nageleefd. Ruim de helft van de plofkippenhouders overtreedt stelselmatig de regels. Maar de massale overtredingen vinden ook plaats in varkens- en kalverstallen. Staatssecretaris Dijksma van landbouw moet nu actie ondernemen!

Prachtig nieuws uit India. Dit land gaat dolfinaria verbieden uit morele overwegingen. Helaas wel op hetzelfde moment dat het dolfinarium in Harderwijk uitbreidt…

The National Forest Service awarded us almost 100,000 m2 of natural reserve as we came together to be the highest bidder. We are the first party in history to have bought a piece of the Netherlands to protect it against failing government policy! Read more about this act in my previous Worldlogs.

Last Saturday the whole world held protests under the name ‘March Against Monsanto’. The Netherlands also held popular protests in such places as Amsterdam and Wageningen. Many of our members were there. Monsanto monopolises the field of genetically manipulated seeds and pesticides. We have been fighting against businesses like Monsanto for years and so we supported the March Against Monsanto with everything we have!

Genetically manipulating plants and seeds is a dramatic break from the way organisms usually reproduce. It affects not only the plants’ integrity, it could also potentially endanger their continued existence and the ecosystem. Genetically manipulated plants can push out their natural counterparts and disrupt the ecosystem. Plus, growing genetically manipulated crops, coupled with using large amounts of agricultural poisons and artificial fertilisers, leads to mass deforestation. It also seems that multinationals like Monsanto that introduce these manipulated crops to the market are using their power to farmers’ expense.

We want to bring an end to growing genetically manipulated crops in Europe and to importing them into Europe, and we want to prevent the Netherlands from growing these crops!

Last week I asked more parliamentary questions about a new television programme in which snakes are thrown from a container with cold water. It is obvious that the snakes are under enormous stress. It is worrying to see people choose barbarism just to raise viewing figures. Animals must be treated with respect and care as they are living, sentient beings with feelings. Fortunately, the Dutch the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has meanwhile started a criminal investigation into animal cruelty on the show!

Last week saw a report by a Dutch research agency that says that intensive factory farming grossly infringes animal welfare laws. Furthermore, the report makes it painfully clear that the factory farming in this country endangers nature and biodiversity. The factory farming industry is not sustainable, and it can never be. The only rules with which this sector must comply are being ignored en masse. Nature is vulnerable so there is simply no room to keep millions of animals. The livestock herd needs to be shrunk by more than half, and the government must take control of monitoring the factory farming industry.

The very few rules that the Netherlands has surrounding the welfare of its 44,500,000 fattened chickens are also largely ignored. More than half of Dutch poultry holders consistently contravene the rules. But the worst of the infringements are found in pig and calf stalls. State Secretary of Agriculture Dijksma needs to take action now!
