EU moet optreden tegen gruwelijk stierenfestival
De Partij voor de Dieren eist dat Europa haar verantwoordelijkheid neemt en Spanje oproept om te stoppen met het horror-festival Toro de Jubilo, waarbij een stier in brand wordt gestoken. Tijdens dit jaarlijkse Spaanse ‘feest’ wordt een jonge stier op het marktplein vastgebonden aan een paal en worden de hoorns van het dier met chemicaliën in brand gestoken. Vervolgens wordt de stier losgelaten en opgejaagd tot hij na een lange doodsstrijd overlijdt.
“Europa verschuilt zich vaak achter het excuus dat het geen wetgeving mag maken over tradities. Dat wil nog niet zeggen dat het de andere kant op mag kijken bij onbeschrijfelijk gruwelijke evenementen als Toro de Jubilo. Een land aanspreken op dit soort misstanden is een must als de EU serieus wil volhouden een waardengemeenschap te zijn,” aldus Hazekamp.
De Partij voor de Dieren wil verder de garantie dat er geen EU-subsidies worden gebruikt voor festivals waarbij stieren worden mishandeld. “Het Europees Parlement heeft zich uitgesproken tegen het subsidiëren van het fokken van stieren voor de stierenvechtindustrie. We willen de garantie dat Europese landbouwsubsidies ook niet ten goede komen aan Spaanse gruwelfestivals als Toro de Jubilo,” aldus de Partij voor de Dieren.
The Party for the Animals demands that Europe should assume responsibility and call on Spain to stop the horror festival Toro de Jubilo, where a live bull is set on fire. During these annual Spanish ‘celebrations’ a young bull is tied to a post on the market square and tar is attached to its horns and set alight. The bull is then released and chased until it dies after a long death-struggle.
“Europe often hides behind the excuse that it is not permitted to make laws on traditions. But that doesn’t mean that it can look the other way on indescribable horrifying events as Toro de Jubilo. Spain must be called to account if the EU wants to continue to maintain as a community of values,” according to Hazekamp.
Additionally, the Party for the Animals wants an assurance that EU subsidies are not used for festivals where bulls are abused. “The European Parliament has spoken out against subsidising the breeding of bulls for the bullfighting industry. We also want the assurance that European agricultural subsidies will not benefit Spanish horror festivals like Toro de Jubilo,” according to the Party for the Animals.
