Worldlog Settimana 49 – 2010

Sono stata la settimana scorsa al vertice sul clima a Cancun. È stata un settimana emozionante. Fortunatamente è stato raggiunto un accordo sul clima giusto in tempo. Sono rimasto particolarmente appassionato dal contributo della Bolivia. Il loro messaggio era il seguente: Madre Terra ha i suoi diritti e noi dobbiamo coesistere con la terra. La Bolivia ha criticato fortemente gli Stati Uniti (USA) durante il vertice perché, secondo la Bolivia gli USA fanno poco per ridurre l’emissione di CO2 ed inoltre gli USA danno troppo pochi soldi ai paesi poveri per poter affrontare i problemi del clima. Anche il Partito per gli Animali ritiene che devono essere messo a disposizione dei paesi poveri più soldi per poter far fronte ai cambiamenti climatici.

Quel che mi colpì a Cancun era che il presidente della Banca Mondiale, il sig. Zoellick, indicava chiaramente che l’agricoltura nei paesi in via di sviluppo deve essere in mano alla popolazione locale. L’industria del bestiame Olandese deve starne allora lontano! Regionalizzazione della produzione del cibo è molto meglio per l’agricoltore dei paesi in via di sviluppo ed anche molto meglio per il clima.

Inoltre, caratteristico è stato che si è parlato dei problemi che l’agricoltura subisce a causa dei cambiamenti climatici mentre l’agricoltura stessa causa la crisi del clima. Per fortuna dichiaravano i rappresentanti dei giovani che secondo loro produzione ostile all’ambiente deve essere più costosa e hanno citato il consumo di carne come causa dei problemi climatici.

Durante il vertice sul clima il film Meat The Truth è stato proiettata più volte. Causa il fitto calendario non sono riuscita ad essere presente durante queste presentazioni, ma sono fiera che il film è stato mostrato più volte durante la conferenza sul clima! Infatti un grande notizia: con Meat the Truth abbiamo ottenuto il 15 novembre il premio per il “Miglior Documentario sui Diritti degli Animali” durante il IV Festival Internazionale del Cinema dei Diritti “STEPS” 2010 in Ucraina.

E per gli appassionati Meat the Truth è adesso anche disponibile in Hindi e Gujaradi! Stiamo ancora lavorando ad una traduzione in Giapponese ed Russo.

Durante la mia assenza Ester Ouwehand si è fatto avanti nel Parlamento per porre fine alla caccia alle balene da parte del Islanda. Attualmente sono in corso dei negoziati riguardante l’ingresso d’Islanda nella Unione Europea. In virtù di trattati internazionali la caccia alle balene è vietata. L’Islanda, tuttavia, non rispetta questi accordi. Il Partito per gli Animali ritiene che ad una possibile adesione d’Islanda deve essere posto una dura richiesta: uno stop immediato alla caccia delle balene.

Altri paesi europei si sono, nel contesto dei negoziati di adesione, espressi contro la caccia delle balena da parte dell’Islanda. La caccia alle balene non è solo illegale perche la balena è un specie in via d’estinzione ma la caccia alle balene è anche infinitamente crudele. Inoltre non esiste nemmeno un mercato per la carne di balena. La maggior parte della carne viene surgelato perché l’Islanda non ne trova mercato. Il Partito per gli Animali non comprende perché l’Islanda continua ancora con la caccia alla balene. A breve presentiamo una mozione sui negoziati con l’Islanda.

I was at the climate summit last week in Cancun. It was an exciting week. Thankfully at the last minute a climate agreement was reached. I felt especially passionate about Bolivia’s contribution. They gave the following message: Mother earth has her rights and we have to co-exist with the earth. During the climate summit, Bolivia expressed a lot of criticism of the United States (US), because according to them, the US does not do enough to limit CO2 emissions or make enough money available to poor countries to allow them to deal with the climate problem. The Party for the Animals also thinks that more money should be made available to help poor countries withstand climate change.

A notable point in Cancun was that the president of the World Bank, Mr. Zoellick, clearly stated that agriculture in developing countries needed to be in the hands of the local population. Therefore the Dutch cattle industry needs to keep out of it! Regionalization of food production is a lot better for the farmer in developing countries and also a lot better for the climate.

Also notable is that it was discussed that the problems agriculture faces are due to climate change; however agriculture itself is causing the climate crisis. Thankfully the youth representatives explained that they want climate-unfriendly production to be more expensive and meat consumption was pointed out by them as a cause of the climate problem.

Meat the Truth was shown several times during the climate summit. Unfortunately I could not be present during the showings due to the busy schedule, but I am proud that the film was shown several times during the climate conference! By the way it’s great news that we won the award for “Best Documentary on Animal Rights” with Meat the Truth on November 15th at the IV International Rights Film Festival “STEPS” 2010 in The Ukraine.

Meat the Truth is now also available in Hindi en Gujaradi! And a Japanese and Russian translation is in progress.
During my absence Esther Ouwehand discussed in the Lower Chamber an end to the whale hunt in Iceland. At this time negotiations are underway about Iceland joining the European Union. Hunting whales is forbidden by international treaties. Iceland is not complying with these agreements. The Party for the Animals believes that if Iceland wishes to join the EU, then it is on one condition: the whale hunt must stop immediately.

Other European countries have spoken out against the whale hunt by Iceland in the framework of the negotiations to join the EU. Hunting whales is not only illegal because the whale is an endangered species, the whale hunt is also unbelievably cruel. There is also no market at all for the whale meat. Most of the meat is stored in freezers, because Iceland has no market for it. Therefore the Party for the Animals does not understand why Iceland needs to continue with the whale hunt. Shortly we will submitting a motion about the negotiations with Iceland.
