Worldlog Settimana 39 – 2008

La settimana scorsa è stata molto intensa a causa della discussione della finanziaria nella camera bassa del parlamento olandese, a seguito del Prinsjesdag: l'apertura ufficiale dell' anno parlamentare. Per questo ho completamente dimenticato di raccontare che domenica 14 settembre ho avuto l'onore di aprire il centro di gatti unico di Marcellina Stolting ad Amsterdam.

Puoi andare a questo centro per un colloquio con uno dei terapisti del comportamento felino nel caso il tuo gatto dovesse avere degli atteggiamenti strani e problematici. Offrono anche informazione su corsi riguardanti il comportamento felino. C' è una sala d'attesa separata per gatti, uno studio e un ricovero specialmente per loro e in più uno spazio per i corsi, una centrale di 'catsitter' (badanti ai gatti) e terapia comportamentale felina. Tutto un piano dunque solo per gatti. Tanta attenzione solo al gatto si può definire unica in Olanda! Marcellina mi ha detto che molti gatti, anche se ricevono da mangiare e da bere, sono spesso infelici. Uno dei malintesi più frequenti è che il gatto sia un animale solitario. Invece si sentono abbandonati se vivono da soli a casa. Ho due gatti a casa e voglio invitare Marcellina per dare un' occhiata anche a loro…

Questa settimana ho provato un nuovo sostituto della carne di Veggiemaster. Devo dire che somiglia pessimamente al sapore della carne e del pesce. Si può ordinare qui.

Mentre gli allevatori di maiali in Olanda si preparano per un fine settimana durante il quale apriranno le loro stalle al pubblico per far vedere come stanno bene i maiali nelle nostre stalle-modello e divampa la discussione sul perché non venga applicata la castrazione anestetizzata, il governo olandese ce la mette proprio tutta non solo per far diventare l'Olanda il macellaio d' Europa ma anche per smerciare la nostra carne di maiale in Cina. Evidentemente non riesce a capacitarsi che dobbiamo inoltrarci verso una produzione più regionale e più durevole e puntare sulle proteine vegetali invece di quelle animali.

In Canada questa settimana andrà in prima visione Meat the Truth. Purtroppo non potrò assistere (anche i vegetariani devono essere parchi di airmiles), ma il 3 ottobre andrò di certo alla prima di Meat the Truth a Hollywood. Le domande ci giungono da tutte le parti, da Città del Capo a Pechino!

Last week was a very busy one owing to the Parliamentary Debate on the Speech from the Throne. Consequently, I completely forgot to mention that I opened Marcellina Stolting’s unique cat behaviour centre in Amsterdam last week.

This centre offers the services of cat behaviour therapists for your troublesome kitty. They can also provide information on special cat behaviour courses. There is a special cat waiting room, a cat consultation room, cat admissions, a training course area, a cat-sitting service and cat behaviour therapy. The entire premises is devoted to the care of felines. This is certainly unique in the Netherlands!
Marcellina told me that many cats, even when provided with the usual creature comforts, are often unhappy. One of the biggest misconceptions around is that cats are solitary animals. Cats get lonely if left at home all alone! As the owner of two cats myself, I’ll soon be inviting Marcellina to come take a look at my kitties…

While Dutch pig farmers are preparing for a weekend in which they open their sties to the public to show everyone just how “wonderful” things are for the pigs and the debate is heating up over why anaesthetised castration has not yet been mandated, the Dutch government is working all out not only to ensure that the Netherlands becomes Europe’s biggest butcher, but also to induce China to buy huge quantities of Dutch pork! Apparently, the message still eludes the Dutch government: we need to move to more regional and sustainable production that stresses vegetable protein above animal protein.

Meat the Truth premiers in Canada this week. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to attend (vegetarians also need to be thrifty with their airmiles). However, I will be attending the Hollywood premier of Meat the Truth on 3 October. Interest in our film is coming from all corners of the earth, from Cape Town to Beijing!
