Worldlog Settimana 27 – 2010

Nei Paesi Bassi fa caldo! Noi speriamo che tutte le persone ed gli animali resistono al questo calore e che gli animali che pascolano nei prati avranno acqua in sufficienza ed un riparo per evitare un po’ il sole rovente. Causa la durata del caldo il Partito per gli Animali ha chiesto la settimana scorso un divieto sul trasporto di animali durante le giornate in cui la temperatura supera i 28 gradi. Nei Paesi Bassi l’Autorità per gli Alimenti ed Articoli esegue dei controlli sui trasporti di animali, onde poter controllare il rispetto delle direttive, ma a mio avviso questo è insufficiente per garantire in periodi di caldo tropicale il benessere dei animali. Ho chiesto una rapida azione da parte del ministro Verburg, (Agricoltura Natura e Qualità degli Alimenti), proprio in vista dei mesi estivi cha stanno arrivando. Le alte temperature sono insopportabile per gli animali, ed i trasporti possono durare per ore.

Inoltre il Partito per gli Animali è indignato per le politiche dei ministri di Agricolture e Salute in materia alla lotta alla, trasmissibile all’uomo , febbre di capra Q, la causa di già ben 15 persone decessi nei Paesi Bassi. La settimana scorsa è stata segnalata nuovamente una infezione da febbre Q presso un allevamento di capre a Lunteren nei Paesi Bassi. Secondo il Partito per gli Animali con ciò si conferma che è troppo presto per ridimensionare il divieto di allevamento e trasporto di capre, introdotto circa sei mesi fa per combattere la malattia. Continuando l’allevamento con delle capre infette la quantità di batteri della febbre Q, che si rilasciano più che altro durante i parti ed aborti, aumentano soltanto.

Il Partito per gli Animali si è già espresso in precedenza contro il l’alleggerimento delle misure contro la febbre Q . La nuova infezione dimostra quanto irresponsabile sarebbe lo scioglimento del divieto di trasporto ed allevamento a partire dal 15 Luglio. Le persone si possono ammalare gravemente causa questo batterio della febbre Q, e cosi aumenterebbe ancora di più il numero di batteri nell’area. Il ministro deve emanare un divieto a vita per questi animali infetti, cosi come è stato fatto in passato per casi simili.

Un attimo le ultime novità riguardante i negoziati per la formazione del nuovo governo nei Paesi Bassi. Il partito più grande, la liberale VVD, è in trattativa con il Partito per il Lavoro, VerdeSinistra e D66 per la formazione di un governo. Ancora non ci sono preso delle decisioni essenziali ma le differenze e le somiglianze tra i vari partito vengono messo a fuoco. Spero che questi partiti riescano velocemente a formare un governo.

Ultima notizia: nei Paesi Bassi iniziano le ferie estive e per questo motivo per le prossime sei settimane non ci sarà nessuno worldlog. Auguro a tutti un estate meravigliosa e ci rivediamo a fine Agosto!

It's hot in Holland! We hope that both people and animals will be able to ride out this heat and that animals in the fields will be given sufficient water and shelter to get away from the burning sun. Because of the persistent heat, the Party for the Animals argued for a ban on cattle transport on days where the mercury climbs above 28 degrees. In the Netherlands, the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority carries out checks on animal transport to verify that transporters are observing the regulations but I believe these regulations cannot sufficiently guarantee animal welfare in times of tropical heat. I argued for quicker action from Minister Verburg and her Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, with an eye to the coming summer months. The animals cannot bear the high temperatures in the cattle trucks, and transport can take hours.

The Party for the Animals is additionally indignant about the Ministers of Agriculture and Public Health's policy surrounding Q-fever. It is a disease found in goats that is communicable to humans, from which 15 people in the Netherlands have died. Last week yet another case of Q-fever infection was reported on a goat farm in Lunteren, the Netherlands. According to the Party for the Animals, this proves that it is far too early to ease the ban on breeding and transporting goats that was introduced six months ago to combat the disease. We should wait at least another half a year. Breeding infected goats increases the numbers of Q-fever bacteria which are mostly released during birth and abortions.

The Party for the Animals has already spoken out once against easing the measures against Q-fever. I believe this new infection shows how irresponsible it is to remove the transport and breeding ban as of 15 July. People can be severely sickened by the Q-fever bacteria, which only serves to increase the number of bacteria in the environment. The minister should announce a lifelong breeding ban as used to be dine in similar cases.

And finally a little news surrounding the governmental negotiations in the Netherlands. The largest party, the liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) is now talking with the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA), GroenLinks and D66 to form a cabinet. They have still have not worked out the most essential issues, but the differences and similarities between all the parties are now being charted. I hope that these parties can work together to form a cabinet.

One last bit of news: It's summer holiday time in the Netherlands and so for the next six weeks there will be no WorldLog. I wish everyone a fantastic summer and see you again at the end of August!
