Worldlog Settimana 19 – 2015
Ho una buone notizie per cominciare! Grazie a una mozione del nostro Partito per il momento non si potrà forare per cercare gas su ed intorno l’isola frisona Terschelling. La maggioranza del parlamento ha votato per la nostra mozione. Terschelling fa parte dell’area delle Isole Frisone. Questo è una natura unica, che attualmente non è sufficientemente protetta contro attività dannose, come la perforazione per il gas e il sale. Sono molto contenta che la mostra mozione è stata accolta ma noi continuiamo a lottare affinché in futuro non ci saranno nuove perforazioni di gas in tutto il mare delle Wadden.
Nel mio Worldlog di due settimane fa vi ho parlato della frode con carne di tacchino è stata accertat da alcuni macellai nei Paesi Bassi. L’Autorità olandese per la sicurezza alimentare ha ora lanciato una vasta indagine per esaminare se i macellai vendono strutturalmente la carne di tacchino più economica come agnello.
La settimana scorsa ho parlato del flusso di rifugiati di persone provenienti da paesi come la Siria, a causa della guerra civile che si sta svolgendo lì. Continuo a sottolineare, sia all’interno, sia al di fuori del parlamento che è importante mettere questi temi in una prospettiva più ampia. Non dobbiamo guardare solo a soluzioni a breve termine, ma anche il terreno fertile per che è la base di questi problemi. Per esempio, il problema dei profughi è anche legato al fatto che consumiamo più di quanto la terra è in grado di gestire: scarsità di cibo, siccità e deforestazione. Tutti problemi che causano conflitti, guerre e flussi di rifugiati. Come risulta per esempio da questa ricerca. Credo che sia giunto il momento che la politica finalmente prende sul serio questi problemi!
Un rapporto del World Wildlife Fund (WWF) mostra che se nessuna azione è presa circa 170 milioni di ettari di foresta saranno persi entro il 2030. 170 milioni di ettari è una superficie grande come le superficie di Germania, Francia, Spagna e Portogallo assieme. La deforestazione si svolgerà in 11 regioni, di cui 10 si trovano in zone tropicali. Il WWF sostiene che la causa principale della deforestazione è la crescente agricoltura, tra cui la zootecnia. Recenti studi hanno dimostrato che l’Europa è uno dei maggiori importatori di prodotti che possono essere collegati alla deforestazione. Sono necessari cambiamenti su larga scala negli allevamenti di bestiame e nelle nostre abitudini di consumo!
Ho trovato questo articolo nel New York Times e vorrei condividerlo con voi. Si tratta di schiavitù moderna nel settore della pesca. Il pesce e frutti di mare che arriva sulle nostre tavole sono spesso stato catturato dai lavoratori pesantemente sfruttati. The Guardian un anno fa, ha fatto una ricerca a riguardo di ciò.

I have some good news to start with! Thanks to our motion gas drilling on and around the Dutch Wadden Island of Terschelling is prohibited for the time being. A majority of the Lower House voted in favour of our motion. Terschelling is situated in the Wadden Area. It is a unique nature reserve that is currently insufficiently protected against damaging activities such as gas drilling and salt mining. I am delighted that our motion was granted and we will continue to fight for no more new gas drilling around the Wadden Area.
In my Worldlog of twee weeks ago, I told you about the fraud with turkey meat that was discovered at a few butcher’s in the Netherlands. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has started an extensive investigation to find out whether butchers sell cheap turkey meat for lambs meat on a structural basis.
Last week, I also discussed the flow of refugees from Syria among other countries as a result of civil war. I continue to point out – both inside and outside the Lower House – that it is crucial to see those problems in a bigger perspective. We should not only look at short-term solutions but more particularly at the source of these problems. The refugee issue is, for example, connected with the fact that we consume more than the earth manages to provide: food scarcity, drought, deforestation. They are all problems that cause conflicts, wars and flows of refugees. This is, for example, evident from this study. It is high time that politicians start to take these problems seriously.

It is crucial that we make large-scale changes in livestock farming and in our consumption behaviour!
I came across this article in the New York Times, which I would really like to share with you. It is about modern slavery in the fishing industry. Fish and sea shells often appear to have been caught by badly exploited workers. The Guardian also already investigated this one year ago.
