Geweldige doorbraak! Met maar liefst 33 zetels in gemeenteraden hebben we bij de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen van 21 maart een spectaculaire groei doorgemaakt. Ons zetelaantal is in de gemeenteraden is bijna verdriedubbeld. Dat hebben we gevierd met een vegan taart en champagne op de fractiekamer. Steeds meer kiezers willen een einde aan het stenen tijdperk en de grootscheepse ontgroening. We zullen het groene anker zijn in alle gemeentes waar we hebben meegedaan, in oppositie of coalitie. Kiezers, campagneteam, alle actieve leden en supporters over de hele wereld: bedankt!

In maart waren er in Australië ook verkiezingen in de staat Zuid-Australië, waar in totaal 58 zetels te verdelen waren. Onze zusterpartij Animal Justice Party (AJP) heeft daar voor het eerst meegedaan en duizenden stemmen gewonnen, maar helaas niet genoeg voor een zetel. Het Australische kiesstelsel maakt het voor kleinere partijen moeilijk om een zetel te verkrijgen. Met deze verkiezingsuitslag laat AJP echter zien dat ze een serieuze politieke factor zijn waar andere partijen rekening mee zullen moeten houden. De uitslag laat zien dat steeds meer Australiërs een samenleving willen die wordt geleid door compassie, duurzaamheid en respect voor alle levende wezens. Gefeliciteerd, AJP en Australiërs!

Op 16 maart heb ik een nieuw wetsvoorstel ingediend voor een algehele verplichting tot verdoving van dieren voorafgaand aan de slacht. In Nederland is al een wettelijke verplichting om dieren te verdoven voordat ze worden geslacht, maar een uitzondering wordt gemaakt voor halal en koosjer slachten. Wij willen die uitzondering schrappen. Het onverdoofd slachten van dieren leidt tot onaanvaardbaar dierenleed. Hoewel elke gelovige het recht heeft zijn eigen religieuze waarheid te beleven zoals hij wil, geeft dat niet het recht inbreuk te maken op de overtuiging van andere mensen of het welzijn van mens of dier. Het moet voor een dier niet uitmaken welk geloof zijn slachter heeft. Ondertussen blijven we uiteraard strijden tegen de hele bio-industrie!

Mensen denken weleens dat het qua dierenwelzijn goed geregeld is in Nederland. Vorige week constateerde toezichthouder de Nederlandse Voedsel- en Warenautoriteit (NVWA) dat pluimveebedrijven vaak regels voor dierenwelzijn en voedselveiligheid moedwillig overtreden. Nog te vaak hebben de dieren bijvoorbeeld onvoldoende voer en drinkwater. Het is hoogste tijd dat de minister van Landbouw dit serieus aanpakt. Wij hebben alvast vragen gesteld in de Tweede Kamer.

Anja Hazekamp bij rondtafelgesprek in het Europees Parlement over de voorjaarsjacht

Nieuws van onze Europese fractie: Onze Europarlementariër Anja Hazekamp, heeft het voortouw genomen in de strijd tegen de jacht op trekvogels op Malta. Samen met andere leden van het Europees Parlement (EP) van verschillende politieke fracties heeft ze de Europese Commissie opgeroepen om een inbreukprocedure tegen Malta op te starten en zo een einde te maken aan de voorjaarsjacht. Tijdens haar bezoek aan Malta afgelopen jaar was Anja zelf getuige van verschillende illegale jachtactiviteiten. Tevens heeft Anja een debat in het EP aangevraagd over deze kwestie.

Ten slotte nog een leuk nieuwtje: 14 april ga ik onze Zweedse zusterpartij Djurens parti opzoeken om ze te helpen met de voorbereiding op de Zweedse verkiezingen. Ik ga die zaterdagavond in Stockholm ook een lezing geven over het belang van onze groeiende politieke beweging voor dier, mens en milieu. De lezing is openbaar, dus nodig al je Zweedse vrienden en kennissen uit en mocht je zelf in de buurt van Stockholm zijn, kom vooral langs! Het aantal plekken is beperkt dus ik raad je aan om je gratis ticket alvast hier te reserveren.

Great breakthrough! With no less than 33 seats in municipal councils, we made a spectacular growth at the municipal elections of 21 March last. Our number of seats in the municipal councils almost trebled. We celebrated this in our party’s room with vegan cake and campaign. Increasingly more voters want to end the stone age and the large-scale de-greening. We will be the green anchor in all municipalities where we participated, in the opposition or in a coalition. Voters, campaign team, all active members and supporters all over the world: Thanks!

In March, there were also elections in Australia in the State of South Australia where there were 58 seats in total to be divided. Our sister party Animal Justice Party (AJP) participated in these elections for the first time and won thousands of votes but unfortunately not enough for a seat. The Australian voting system makes it hard for small parties to gain a seat. With this election result, however, AJP has shown that it is a serious political factor which other parties must consider. The result shows that increasingly more Australians want a society that is led by compassion, sustainability, and respect for all living creatures! Congratulations, AJP and Australians!

On the 16th of March, I submitted a new legislative proposal for a general obligation to stun all animals before they are slaughtered. In the Netherlands there already is a statutory obligation to stun animals before they are slaughtered, but an exception is made for halal and kosher slaughter. We want to cancel that exception. The mutandis slaughter of animals leads to unacceptable animal suffering. Although every religious person has the right to live his religious truth the way he wants to, it does not give him the right to infringe other beliefs or the welfare of humans or animals. The religion of the slaughter should not make a difference for an animal. But meanwhile we will of course continue to fight against factory farming as a whole!

People sometimes think that everything is organised well where it concerns animal welfare. Last week, the supervisor of the Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) found that poultry farms often deliberately violate animal welfare and food safety regulations . It still happens too often that animals, for example, have too little food and drinking water. It is high time that the Minister of Agriculture starts to tackle this seriously. We have already asked questions in the Lower House.

News from our European political party. Our MEP Anja Hazekamp has taken the lead in the fight against the hunting of migratory birds on Malta. Together with other members of the European Parliament (EP) of several political groups, she called upon the European Commission to start infringement proceedings against Malta and to put a stop to the spring hunting. During her visit to Malta last year, Anja witnessed several illegal hunting activities herself. Anja also requested a debate in the EP about this issue.

Finally, some nice news: On the 14th of April, I am going to visit our Swedish sister party Djurens Parti to help them with the preparations for the Swedish elections. I will also give a lecture that Saturday night in Stockholm about the importance of our growing political movement for animals, people and the environment.
