Partij voor de Dieren wil sluiting dolfinarium Loro Parque
30 januari 2018 – De Nederlandse Partij voor de Dieren dringt bij de Europese Commissie aan op sluiting van het dolfinarium ‘Loro Parque’ in Tenerife, omdat het Europese dierenwelzijnsregels voor dierentuinen schendt. “Volgens experts zijn de bassins in het Loro Parque veel te klein en totaal niet afgestemd op de behoeften van orka’s en andere walvisachtigen. Ook hebben de dieren verwondingen, wat duidt op onderlinge agressie die voortkomt uit een ongeschikte leefomgeving,” aldus Partij voor de Dieren Europarlementariër Anja Hazekamp.
De Partij voor de Dieren wijst daarnaast op de rechtszaak over orka Morgan die vorige week plaatsvond. Morgan strandde in 2010 in de Waddenzee en verblijft momenteel onder barre omstandigheden in Loro Parque. “Morgan is onder valse voorwendselen vanuit Nederland naar Tenerife verplaatst en vervolgens misbruikt voor orkashows en andere commerciële doelen. Dat is in strijd met het internationale CITES-verdrag ter bescherming van bedreigde dier- en plantensoorten. Zowel de Nederlandse als de Spaanse en Europese overheden keken toe hoe het Loro Parque internationale regels aan zijn laars lapte,” zegt Hazekamp.
De problemen bij dolfinaria gaan echter verder dan het Loro Parque alleen. “Uit onderzoek blijkt dat het onmogelijk is om orka’s en andere walvisachtigen een acceptabel leven te bieden in gevangenschap. Deze dieren horen in de natuur en niet levenslang opgesloten in kleine bekkens om ze kunstjes te laten doen. Wanneer een dier strandt moet alles in het werk worden gesteld om het terug te laten keren naar zijn natuurlijke leefomgeving,” aldus de Partij voor de Dieren.

Party for the Animals MEP Anja Hazekamp: “According to experts, the tanks in Loro Parque are far too small and not at all adapted to the needs of orcas or other cetaceans. On top of that, the animals have injuries, which suggests mutual aggression resulting from an unsuitable living environment.”
The Party for the Animals also points to orca Morgan’s latest court case that took place last week. Morgan, who was found swimming in the Wadden Sea in 2010, is currently staying at Loro Parque under adverse conditions. Hazekamp: “Morgan was moved from the Netherlands to Tenerife under false pretences and there, she is used for orca shows and other commercial purposes, which is in breach of the international CITES, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. Dutch, Spanish and European authorities all watched as Loro Parque flouted international regulations.”
However, the problems in the dolphinarium industry go beyond Loro Parque. “Research has shown that it is impossible for orcas and other cetaceans to live a decent life in captivity. These animals belong in the wild; they should not be locked up in small tanks performing tricks their whole lives. Every effort should be made to take stranded animals back to their natural habitat,” according to the Party for the Animals.
