De Partij voor de Dieren doet in twaalf gemeenten mee aan de gemeenteraadsverkiezingen in maart! Ik ben heel trots op de ontwikkeling die onze partij doormaakt op gemeentelijk niveau. De partij wil haar aantal politieke vertegenwoordigers gestaag uitbreiden, maar we waken ervoor om te snel te groot te willen worden. Momenteel zijn we vertegenwoordigd in zes gemeenten. Als het aan ons ligt zal dat aantal na de verkiezingen zijn verdubbeld 😉

Deze week hebben we Kamervragen gesteld over de nieuwe toelatingen van gentechgewassen in de Europese Unie. Wij willen dat onze regering tégen de toelating van nieuwe genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen stemt. Genetische manipulatie tast de integriteit aan van planten en dieren. Ook vormt deze techniek een groot risico voor mensen en de biodiversiteit. Veel problemen ontstaan doordat multinationals de technologie gebruiken om commerciële genetisch gemanipuleerde gewassen te produceren die het milieu en ons voedsel zwaar belasten met bestrijdingsmiddelen. Introductie van deze gewassen in Europa is dus geen goed idee voor het behoud van onze bodem- en voedselkwaliteit en onze keuzevrijheid!

Wij wijzen genetische manipulatie dus sterk af, en zetten ons al jaren in voor een gentechvrij Nederland en Europa. Genetische modificatie en grootschalig gebruik van giffen leidt tot ontbossing, tot vergiftiging van onze bodem en ons grond- en oppervlaktewater. Dit leidt tot de vernietiging van onze kwetsbare maar essentiële biodiversiteit, inclusief de bestuivers als bijen, hommels en vlinders. Dit betekent ook dat de consument afhankelijk wordt van een handvol bedrijven die onze voedselvoorziening monopoliseren.

De gentechgewassen die op de akkers staan hebben geen voordelen voor het milieu, noch voor de consument of de kleine boer. De voordelen van gentech belanden in de zakken van de industrie en de grote boeren die voormalige oerbossen omtoveren in monoculturen GM soja voor veevoer. Gentech vormt bovendien een bedreiging voor de gangbare en biologische teelt omdat de gewassen zich kunnen vermengen. Wij willen een landbouw zonder genetische manipulatie, zonder landbouwgif en zonder monoculturen.

Mooi nieuws! Er komt snel een wet die regelt dat mensen met een hulp- of geleidehond niet langer de toegang mag worden geweigerd tot openbare gelegenheden. Op dit moment overkomt het mensen met een beperking dagelijks dat zij niet met hun hulp- of geleidehond naar binnen mogen in winkels, restaurants, hotels en andere voorzieningen. Na een petitie en een motie van ons beloofde het kabinet snel met een wetsvoorstel te komen om deze schrijnende situatie op te lossen. Het wetsvoorstel wordt begin volgend jaar verwacht.

Vorig week vertelde ik al dat de Animal Politics Foundation een symposium organiseert in Istanbul. Het symposium is bedoeld voor geïnteresseerden in dierenrechten en dierenpolitiek, en meer in het bijzonder voor mensen die zich bezighouden met de theorie of praktijk van de relatief jonge, maar invloedrijke politieke stroming van Animal Politics. Het symposium is in Istanbul omdat er in Turkije een relatief nieuwe Partij voor de Dieren actief is, de Hayvan Partisi. Door het symposium in Istanbul te houden willen wij steun geven aan deze beweging in Turkije.

De antwoorden van het kabinet op mijn vragen over het doden van zwerfhonden in Roemenië zijn binnen. Nou ja, eigenlijk zijn er geen antwoorden binnen. De conclusie is dat onze regering vindt dat het aan de Roemeense regering is om zelf beleid te formuleren…

Deze week werd bekend dat China graag hondenvlees wil gaan exporteren. Net zoals Nederland kalfjes, varkensoren en kuikens exporteert. Lees hier meer over op http://guardianlv.com/2013/10/dog-me.

The Party for the Animals will participate in the municipal elections of March in twelve municipalities! I am really proud of the developments our Party is going through at municipal level. The Party wishes to steadily expand its number of political representatives, but we are careful not to grow too large too quickly. We are currently represented in six municipalities. And if we have any say in it, that number will have doubled after the elections 😉

This week, we asked Parliamentary questions about the new admission of gen-tech crops into the European Union. We want our Government to vote against the admission of new genetically manipulated crops. Genetic manipulation affects the integrity of plants and animals. This technology is also a great risk for people and the biodiversity. Many problems arise because multinationals use this technology to produce commercial genetically manipulated crops, which severely burden the environment and our food with pesticides. The introduction of these crops in Europe is thus not a good idea for maintaining our soil and food quality and our freedom of choice.

We strongly reject genetic manipulation and strived for years to ensure a genetic technology free Netherlands and Europe. Genetic modification and large-scale use of poisons will lead to deforestation, poisoning of our soil, and our soil and surface water. This will lead to the destruction of our vulnerable but essential biodiversity, including the pollinators such as bees, humblebees and butterflies. This also means that the consumer becomes dependant on a handful of companies which monopolise our food supply.

The gen-tech crops on the fields do not benefit the environment, nor the consumer or the small farmer. The benefits of gen-tech end up in the pockets of the industry and large farmers who have transformed former primeval forests into monocultures GM soy for livestock feed. Additionally, gen-tech is a threat to contemporary and organic farming because the crops can be mixed. We want an agriculture without genetic manipulation, without agricultural pesticides, and without monocultures.

Great news! A new law will soon be implemented that will no longer allow that people with a help dog or guide dog are denied access to public areas. At this moment, it still happens every day that people with a disability are denied access with their help or guide dog to shops, restaurants, hotels, and other facilities. After a petition and a motion from us, the Government promised to soon come with a bill to solve this distressing situation. The bill is expected at the start of the next year.

Last week, I told you that the Animal Politics Foundation is organising a symposium in Istanbul. The symposium is intended for people who are interested in animal rights and animal politics, and more specifically for people who are engaged in the theory or practice of the relatively young, but influential political movement of Animal Politics. The symposium is held in Istanbul because there is a relatively new Party for the Animals in Turkey, namely the Hayvan Partisi. By holding the symposium in Istanbul we want to support this movement in Turkey.

I have received the Government’s answers to my previous questions about the killing of stray dogs in Romania. Well, the fact is that there are no answers! The Government’s conclusion is that it is up to the Romanian government to formulate its own policy.

This week it became known that China wants to export dog meat. Just like the Netherlands is exporting calves, pig’s ears and chicks. Read more about this on http://guardianlv.com/2013/10/dog-me.
