Eindelijk wordt er werk gemaakt om de import van de zeer vervuilende teerzandolie aan banden te leggen! Onze regering moet zich in Brussel sterk gaan maken voor een Europees importverbod.
Wij dringen al langer aan op maatregelen tegen deze brandstof, omdat de winning ervan gepaard gaat met grootschalige natuurvernietiging en landroof. Teerzandolie komt voornamelijk uit Canada en vormt daar een zware aanslag op de ecosystemen. Om het teerzand op te kunnen graven wordt op grote schaal bos gekapt en water en grond vervuild.
Teerzandolie is daarnaast vanwege de hoge CO2-uitstoot nog veel schadelijker voor het klimaat dan andere brandstoffen. Bovendien verwoest de oliewinning de leefgebieden van inheemse First Nations gemeenschappen. Mensen worden van hun land verdreven en worden ziek van de zware metalen en chemicaliën die in de hele voedselketen terug te vinden zijn. Deze verontreiniging veroorzaakt een extreem hoog aantal kankergevallen onder de lokale bevolking.
Elk jaar publiceert de Nederlandse krant Trouw een duurzame top 100 van de meest invloedrijke Nederlanders op het gebied van duurzaamheid. Wij staan er als enige Tweede Kamerfractie volledig in! Ik mocht plaats 18 innemen vanwege ondermeer de succesvolle strijd tegen de uitverkoop van natuur door natuurorganisatie Staatsbosbeheer. Via een ‘woudfunding-campagne’ afgelopen april werd via onze website in twee weken tijd een kwart miljoen euro ingezameld om de meest kwetsbare natuur vrij te kopen. Staatsbosbeheer moet namelijk bezuinigen en wil dit doen door meerdere stukken natuur in Nederland te verkopen aan de hoogste bieder. De hoogste bieder kon dus ook iemand zijn die van de natuur iets heel anders zou gaan maken. Tijdens de veiling lukt het ons bijna 100.000 m2 natuur vrij te kopen! De verkoop van meer natuurgebieden is voorlopig gelukkig opgeschort.
Mijn collega Esther heeft van Trouw een plek in de top 100 gekregen wegens haar strijd tegen het illegaal dumpen van vis en omdat ze het ‘leven van pesticidefabrikanten zuur maakt’. Wij gaan uiteraard door met onze strijd tegen alle onzalige plannen die onze planeet verder in gevaar brengen!
Vandaag (maandag 14 oktober) heb ik een vervolggesprek met de ambassadeur van Roemenië over de nieuwe Roemeense wet die het mogelijk maakt om zwerfhonden willekeurig weg te vangen, te doden door vergiftiging, dood te slaan of te laten verhongeren in asielen. Het Roemeense Constitutionele Hof heeft op 25 september besloten de wet te handhaven. Deze Roemeense wet negeert echter wel een aantal Europese afspraken. Op 20 september was ik ook bij de ambassadeur. Het verslag van wat toen besproken is, staat in mijn Worldlog van week 39. Volgende week meer over het tweede gesprek!
500.000 hectare natuur op de prachtige Aru eilanden (bij Indonesië) dreigt te worden verslonden door suikerrietplantages van multinationals. Help mee en steun het protest van de lokale bevolking.
Om mee af te sluiten deze prachtige uitspraak van wereldberoemde ecoloog Rachel Carson: “We cannot have peace among men whose hearts find delight in killing any living creature.”

Finally, measures are taken to curb the import of highly polluting tar sand oil! Our government will have to advocate in Brussels for a European import ban.
We have been pressing for measures against this fuel for some time as its extraction entails large-scale nature destruction and land grabbing. Tar sand oil mainly comes from Canada and is a severe attack on the ecosystems there. To be able to dig up the tar sands, forests are cut down and water and soil get polluted on a large scale.
In addition, due to its high CO2 emissions, tar sand oil is even more damaging to the climate than other fuels. On top of that, the oil extraction is destroying the habitats of native First Nations communities. People are expelled from their land and the heavy metals and chemicals that are everywhere in their food make them ill. This pollution causes an extremely high number of cancer cases among the local population.
Every year, the Dutch newspaper Trouw publishes a “Sustainable Top 100” of the most influential Dutch people in the area of sustainability. We are the only full parliamentary group of the Lower House listed! I was listed as no. 18 because of our successful fight against the selling of nature by nature organisation Staatsbosbeheer (Dutch National Forest Service). Through a ‘forest funding campaign’ last April, one quarter of a million Euros was raised through our website in two weeks’ time to buy the most vulnerable nature. Staatsbosbeheer needs to cut back and they want to do so by selling several pieces of nature in the Netherlands to the highest bidder. But the highest bidder could also be someone who would change the nature into something completely different. During the action we managed to buy almost 100,000 m2 of nature! The selling of more nature areas was fortunately suspended for now.
My colleague Esther was listed in the Top 100 by Trouw because of her fight against the illegal dumping of fish and because she made the ‘life of pesticides manufacturers difficult’. We will of course continue our fight against all ill-fated plans that will further endanger our planet earth.
Today (Monday the 14th of October), I will have a follow-up meeting with the ambassador of Romania about the new Romanian law that makes it possible to catch stray dogs at random, or to kill them by poison, hit them to death, or starve them in shelters. The Romanian Constitutional Court ruled in favour of the law on the 25th of September last. But this Romanian law ignores a number of European agreements. I also met the ambassador on the 20th of September last. The minutes of what was discussed on the 20th can be found in my Worldlog of week 39. Next week I will tell you more about the second meeting.
