Groeiend verzet: Portugese partij voor de dieren behaalt zetel in nationaal parlement

PAN, de Portugese partij voor de dieren, heeft zondag 4 oktober een zetel in het nationale parlement gewonnen! PAN is hiermee de tweede politieke partij ter wereld die primair opkomt voor dieren, natuur en milieu met een vertegenwoordiger in het nationale parlement. De Partij voor de Dieren feliciteert PAN van harte met hun zetel! Met dit succes wordt een sterk signaal afgegeven naar traditionele partijen: verandering is hard nodig.

Ruim 74.000 Portugezen brachten op Werelddierendag hun stem uit op PAN (Pessoas – Animais – Natureza, oftwel, Mensen – Dieren – Natuur). Daarmee is André Silva met 1,39% van de stemmen gekozen tot deputado. Eerder behaalde PAN al zetels in gemeenteraden, maar met hun parlementszetel kan de partij nu ook op landelijk niveau opkomen voor de belangen van dieren, natuur en milieu. De winst van PAN is een belangrijke ontwikkeling voor dieren én mensen in Portugal.

De uitslag illustreert de groei van de wereldwijde beweging van mensen die behoefte hebben aan een politieke stroming die niet de korte termijn belangen van de mens centraal stelt, maar de planeet en daarmee ál haar bewoners. Sinds de oprichting van de Partij voor de Dieren in 2002 zijn er ook in andere landen partijen voor de dieren opgericht of in oprichting, onder meer in het Verenigd Koninkrijk, Brazilië, Spanje, Portugal, Duitsland, Zweden, Finland, Italië, Frankrijk, Turkije, Oostenrijk, Zwitserland, Denemarken, de Verenigde Staten, Australië en Canada.

On Sunday 4 October, PAN, the Portuguese party for the animals, won a seat in national Parliament! This makes PAN the second political party in the world to protect primarily the interests of animals, nature and the environment with a representative in national Parliament. The Party for the Animals congratulate PAN wholeheartedly on their seat! This success conveys a strong signal to traditional parties: change is badly needed.

On World Animal Day, more than 74,000 Portuguese voted for PAN (Pessoas – Animais – Natureza, i.e., People – Animals – Nature). With 1.39% of the votes, this made André Silva elected deputado. PAN already obtained seats in municipal councils before, but their seat in Parliament allows the party to protect the interests of animals, nature and the environment at a national level as well. The success of PAN is a major development for animals as well as people in Portugal.

The outcome illustrates the growth of the worldwide movement of people who feel the need for a political movement that does not focus primarily on the short-term interests of people, but on the planet with all of its inhabitants. Since the foundation of the Party for the Animals in 2002, parties for animals have been founded or are in formation in other countries as well, including the United Kingdom, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Italy, France, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, the United States, Australia and Canada.
