Worldlog Settimana 8 – 2015

La settimana scorsa sono andata a Nuernberg in Germania. C’erano delle relazioni interessanti sulla questione alimentare mondiale e sono state presentate le ultime innovazioni nell’agricoltura biologica. Professore Harry Aiking dell’Universita’ Libera di Amsterdam era presente ed ha sottolineato durante la sua relazione, che gli Olandesi mangiano ancora oggi troppe proteine animalischi. Questa abitudine non e’ sostenibile, non fa bene alla salute e causa molta sofferenza per gli animali. Ha spiegato che una riduzione del consumo di carne portera’ anche una forte riduzione del costo del cibo, in quanto il mangime determina il costo mondiale del cibo. Mangiando meno carne aiuti quindi anche i poveri.

Quest’anno comincia nei Paesi Bassi una campagna statale sull’abuso domestico. Verranno fornite informazioni sull’abuso domestico, l’abuso dei bambini e degli anziani. Abbiamo chiesto di toccare nella campagna anche il rapporto tra abuso degli animali e abuso domestico. Il Partito per gli Animali ha richiesto questo riconoscimento ripetutamente. La ricerca dismostra che si tratta di violenza domestica in un terzo dei casi di abuso degli animali. E’ giusto riconoscere questi signali, in modo che la violenza contro l’uomo e l’animale possa essere segnalata tempisticamente.

Il 21 febbraio e’ stata organizzata dai cacciatori una giornata nelle provincia di Limburg in cui si spareranno piu’oche possibile. Orrendo! Questa settimana ho fatto delle domande alla Camera su questa “giornata per uccidere le oche”. Il richiamo di uccidere piu’ aninmali possibile in un ambito competitivo e’ completamente opposto alle basi della legislatura per quanto riguarda la gestione degli animali. Non e’ la prima giornata nei Paesi Bassi che viene organizzata in ambito competitivo per uccidere piu’ animali possibile, e’ gia’ successo con i corvi. Anche in quel caso ho fatto delle domande alla Camera. Anche se la giornata per uccidere piu’ corvi possibile in una sola giornata e’ stata approvata dal segretario, alla fine sono stati i cacciatori a cancellare la giornata a causa di tutte le proteste della societa’ che questo aveva provocato. Spero succedera’ la stessa cosa con la giornata delle oche!

La settimana scorsa l’Unione Europea ha riparato un errore nella legge sull’importo delle trofee di caccia di leoni ed altri animali. Per la legge facevano parte dei “posseduti domestici e personali”. In questo modo sono state importate ad esempio quasi 1500 trofee di leoni tra il 2008 e 2012, mentre il leone e’ una specie protetta che non puo’ essere commercializzata! L’anno scorso ho gia’ fatto delle domande alla Camera su questo argomento. Per fortuna e’ stato vietato ora l’importo di trofee ottenute durante i viaggi in Africa.

La casa madre di catene di moda come ad esempio Zara, Bershka e Pull&Bear ha smesso di vendere vestiti con lana di angora. L’organizzazione per il benessere degli animali PETA, ha insistito su questa cosa per raggiungere questo risultato. Congratulazioni PETA! L’azienda di moda donera’ le scorte rimaste in magazzino ai rifugiati siriani in Libanon. Si tratta di un messaggio importante sulla compassione con animali e persone nello stesso momento. Una rappresentante di PETA Olanda dice “Solo persone con una disperata mancanza di bisogni basali hanno un minimo di scusa per mettersi adosso la pelliccia strappata da animali vivi”.

Last week, I visited the Biofach in Nuremberg, Germany. It hosted interesting lectures on the word food problem, and presentations were made of state-of-the-art innovations in the field of organic farming. Professor Harry Aiking of the Amsterdam VU university was also present and he emphasised in his lecture that Dutch people are still eating way too much animal proteins, which is not sustainable, is unhealthy and, what’s more, causes animal suffering. He explained that a decrease in meat consumption will also result in a substantial decrease in food prices, since animal feed determines the world price. So, you can also help the poor by eating less meat.

This year, a public campaign on domestic violence will be held in the Netherlands. In this campaign, information will be given about domestic violence, child abuse and parent abuse. At our request, the relationship between animal abuse and domestic violence will also be included in the campaign. In this way, the government recognises the link between animal abuse and domestic violence. The Party for the Animals has repeatedly insisted on this recognition in debates. Research has shown that domestic violence occurs in one third of the number of established cases of animal abuse. It is good that these signs are now acted upon so as to enable a timely identification of violence against humans and animals in the future.

Hunters from the province of Limburg have organised a competition to shoot as many geese as possible in one day, on 21 February. Disgusting! I asked Parliamentary Qustions this week about this ‘goose shooting day’. A call to kill as many animals as possible in a one-day competition goes against all legal principles in the area of duty of care and careful fauna policy. In the Netherlands, more competitions to kill a maximum amount of animals are organised, for example, with crows earlier. I also asked Parliamentary Questions then. Although the State Secretary simply allowed the crow shooting day to take place that time, the competition was eventually called off by the hunters themselves, because of the social unrest it created. I hope the goose shooting day will also be called off!

Last week, the European Union remedied an error in the law on the import of hunting trophies of lions and other animals. Hunting trophies used to be considered ‘household and personal belongings’. As a consequence, almost 1,500 lion trophies were imported between 2008 and 2012 only, whereas the lion is a protected species which cannot be traded! I already asked Parliamentary Questions about this last year. Fortunately, the import of animals hunted during trophy trips in Africa has now been banned after all.

The parent company of fashion chains such as Zara, Bershka and Pull&Bear has stopped selling clothes that contain angora wool. PETA, the animal welfare organisation, insisted on this – congratulations PETA! The company will donate its remainder of stock to Syrian refugees in Libanon. This is an important message about compassion for animals and human beings. “Only people with a desperate lack of basic needs have an excuse to wear fur that has been ripped out of live animals.” said a spokes woman of Peta Netherlands.
