Dal 13 fino al 25 novembre incluso avranno luogo le elezioni per i Consigli delle Acque. I Consigli delle Acque sono vecchi di secoli e fanno parte, come le Provincie ed i Comuni, del governo olandese.I Consigli delle Acque nacquero perché 'l'acqua' era molto importante nella vita quotidiana della gente nel territorio che oggi chiamiamo i Paesi Bassi. Per creare la terra sulla quale abitare e lavorare, l'acqua dovette indietreggiare. Per questo furono costruite le dighe e scavati fossi e canali. Le persone che si occupavano di ciò formarono reti di cooperazione e con questo animarono i Consigli delle Acque.

Il Partito per gli Animali parteciperà per la prima volta a queste elezioni e, secondo la stampa, l'orientamento che vuole seguire è completamente diverso da quello degli altri partiti). Noi puntiamo energicamente a creare un habitat idoneo e sicuro in cui vivere, rispettando i vari elementi che ne fanno parte quindi l'uomo, gli animali, la natura e l'ambiente. Idrovore sicure per i pesci, acqua più pulita (meno fosfato e meno sostanze repellenti), vogliamo porre fine alla crudele e dispendiosa caccia ai topi muschiati (il topo muschiato sarebbe colpevole di minacciare le dighe) e ai passatempi che coinvolgono gli animali come la pesca con la canna. Queste sono alcune delle nostre priorità.

Capolista per il consiglio per la gestione delle acque di Rijnland, Dick Vos, ha un topo muschiato impagliato, chiamato Jessica, come mascotte, che l'accompagna dappertutto. Una mossa astuta per far sì che, durante i dibattiti e le interviste, l'attenzione venga incentrata sugli animali.

Il ministro dell'agricoltura Verburg ha fatto sapere alla Camera dei Deputati che il numero di violazioni relative al trasporto degli animali è raddoppiato rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2007. Anche grazie alla nostra insistenza, il ministro ha dato incarico alla VWA, l'organo che sorveglia i trasporti degli animali, di intensificare i controlli proprio durante queste attività di trasporto. Io trovo ovvio e scontato che vengano constatate molteplici trasgressioni: diverse indagini e rapporti dimostravano già che tali violazioni fossero di natura praticamente strutturale nel settore del trasporto degli animali. Sono seguite lettere infuriate da parte di alcuni trasportatori di animali, nelle quali costoro sostenevano che non ci fosse alcun motivo per preoccuparsi e invitavano ad effettuare controlli diretti e a verificare con i propri occhi. Ecco il risultato…
Da vergognarsi semplicemente. Sarebbe giunto il tempo per prendere delle misure durissime!! Ma no, il ministro crede ancora che il settore, autonomamente, possa risolvere i propri problemi ed ha abbracciato recentemente un sistema di controllo, sviluppato dal settore stesso. Inoltre il ministro racconta come se niente fosse alla Camera dei Deputati che, per ora, non ha intenzione di rendere pubblici i dati di controllo sui trasporti di animali, mentre una maggioranza parlamentare le aveva chiesto di far questo tramite una mozione. Inconcepibile!

Questa settimana abbiamo ricevuto parecchie e-mail sulle massiccie pratiche di abbattimento di cani sull'isola greca di Rhodos. L'Organizzazione Veterinari senza Frontiere ha iniziato un'azione di protesta contro queste pratiche. Come partito politico olandese non possiamo fare molto, ma vorrei consigliare a tutti di visitare il sito di Soccorso agli Animali senza Frontiera per mandare una mail di protesta.

Elections for the Netherlands’ district water boards will be held from 13 through 25 November. The district water boards have existed for centuries and, along with the provinces and municipalities, form part of the governmental structure of the Netherlands. District water boards arose because of the major role “water” played in the everyday lives of the people living in the region now known as the Netherlands. Building homes and farming requires land, and to create this land, the water had to be pushed back. So dikes were built and ditches and canals were dug. This work meant communities had to cooperate and so the district water boards were born.

The Party for the Animals will be contesting these elections for the first time and has been – according to the press – putting out a message very different from that of the other parties. We are dedicated to a safe and pleasant environment where people live with respect for each other, animals, nature and their surroundings. Pumping stations that are not harmful to fish, cleaner water (less phosphate and pesticides), an end to the cruel and expensive muskrat hunt (the muskrat allegedly threaten the dikes) and a halt to animal sports such as angling are some of our policy spearheads.

Heading the candidates for the Rijnland Polder Board, Dick de Vos has a stuffed muskrat mascot named Jessica that he takes everywhere. A smart way to ensure animals get their fair share of attention during debates and interviews.

Minister Verburg of Agriculture informed the Lower House that the number of animal transport-related offences doubled this year compared to the same period in 2007. Partly thanks to our insistence , the minister has instructed the Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority, the agency tasked with supervising animal transports, to increase the number of checks. I find it typical that so many offences should be reported. Studies have shown that these offences are inherent in the animal transport sector. Following the publication of these studies, enraged letters from animal transporters claimed that all was well in the sector and invited interested parties to come and look for themselves. Simply shameful. Surely time for tough measures! But no! The minister still believes that the sector can get its own house in order and recently endorsed a monitoring system developed by the sector itself. The minister also coolly told the Lower House that she currently had no plans to publicize the findings of the monitoring activities, despite a parliamentary majority having requested this in a motion. Incomprehensible!

This week we received a lot of e-mails about the destruction of dogs on the Greek island of Rhodos. The organisation Dierenhulp zonder Grenzen (animal assistance without borders) has begun a protest campaign.
