Worldlog Settimana 41 – 2008

Mercoledì scorso sono tornata in Olanda dopo una première riuscita ed ispiratrice di Meat the Truth a Hollywood. Abbiamo ricevuto molte reazioni entusiastiche e sono stati fissati degli appuntamenti per studiare le possibilità di ulteriore distribuzione in tutti gli Stati Uniti.

Nel frattempo Meat the Truth è stato selezionato per diversi importanti festival cinematografici negli Stati Uniti come il Montana Cine Festival a Missoula, Montana, il 7th Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film festival a Nevada City, California e il 56th Columbus International Film + Video Festival, oppure 'The Chris Awards'.

Ho lavorato sodo questa settimana per finire il mio apporto al dibattito sulla proposta di legge “divieto di allevamento di animali da pelliccia” del Partito del Lavoro e del Partito Socialista. Gli allevatori di visoni con questa legge avranno ancora dieci anni per terminare gradualmente le loro imprese. Io preferirei che si fermassero immediatamente, adesso che, da più di 25 anni, si sta parlando di un divieto. Un risanamento caldo del settore è una buona opzione allora.

Nel 2002 c'era ancora la proposta di Viola II, il consiglio dei ministri olandese al governo dal 3 agosto 1989 fino al 22 luglio 2002, per proibire l'allevamento di visoni, ma questa fu respinta dal governo succesivo: Balkenende I. Da allora in poi gli allevatori di visoni hanno raddoppiato il numero di visoni che allevano, mentre sanno che la grande maggioranza della popolazione olandese vuole un divieto! Hanno quindi preso ben consapevolmente il rischio di investimento dato che l'allevamento potrà essere comunque ancora proibito.

L'Unione Cristiana ed il Partito per la Libertà sembrano non voler appoggiare la proposta di legge attuale, mentre nelle loro campagne e nei dibattiti precedenti hanno sempre indicato di essere in favore al divieto di allevamenti di animali da pelliccia!

Un' ampia maggioranza parlamentare ha approvato la mozione del Partito per gli Animali per porre fine all’elusione del divieto di tagliare la coda ai cavalli. Tagliare le code di cavallo è vietato dal 2001 in Olanda. Eppure questo divieto viene spesso aggirato facendogli tagliare la coda in Francia. Là il taglio è ancora permesso per motivi storici-culturali ed in base alle stime vengono tagliate le code a centinaia di puledri olandesi annualmente. Questa settimana è stata approvata una mozione del Partito per gli Animali, che chiede misure per frenare questo percorso alternativo. La mozione è stata sottoscritta anche dal Partito del Lavoro.

La settimana scorsa ho pubblicato un articolo di opinione nel Financieel Dagblad (Quotidiano Finanziario) sulla crisi creditizia in rapporto alla nostra avidità, e su come possiamo costruire un mondo migliore quando della crisi creditizia, climatologica ed alimentare e delle crisi di acqua potabile e di malattie animali facciamo un vero punto di svolta. After a successful and inspiring premiere of Meat the Truth in Hollywood I got back to the Netherlands last Wednesday. People reacted very enthusiastically and we arranged meetings to investigate the possibility of distributing the film through the entirety of the United States.

Meat the Truth has meanwhile been selected and/or nominated for different significant American film festivals such as the Montana CINE Festival in Missoula, Montana, the 7th Annual Wild and Scenic Environmental Film Festival in Nevada City, California and the 56th Columbus International Film and Video Festival, otherwise known as “The Chris Awards.

I've been working hard this week on my contribution to the debate about the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA) and the Socialist Party (SP)'s “Fur Bearing Animal Breeding Ban Act” proposal.

This Act will give mink breeders ten years to dismantle their businesses. I would prefer they stopped immediately, especially as they've been talking about a ban for 25 years now, however a slow but sure reorganisation of this industry is a good option.

In 2002, the Paars II coalition, the Dutch cabinet that governed from 3 August 1998 to 22 July 2002, had a proposal to ban mink breeding, but that was swept from the table by the following cabinet, Balkenende I.

Since then, fur breeders have doubled the amount of minks they breed, even though they know that the vast majority of the Dutch population support a ban! They therefore made a conscious decision to invest in breeding farms that could still be banned.

The ChristianUnion Party and the Party for Freedom (PVV) appear to not want to support the current Act proposal, whereas in their campaigns and earlier debates they stated they were for a fur bearing animal breeding ban!

The large majority of Dutch parliament voted for the Party for the Animals' motion to put an end to the circumvention of the ban on docking horses' tails. Docking horses' tails has been banned in the Netherlands since 2001, however people are circumventing this law by having their horses' tails docked in France. Docking is still allowed in France for cultural-historic reasons and it is estimated that hundreds of Dutch foals have their tails docked there each year. This week, the Party for the Animals' motion that requests measures be taken to stop this sneak route was adopted. The motion was co-signed by the PvdA.
