Worldlog Settimana 08 – 2010

A distanza di una settimana dal momento in cui è caduto il governo, la questione “Uruzgan” rimane attuale nella politica olandese. La settimana scorsa il governo se ne è andato, perché i partiti della coalizione non riuscivano a raggiungere un accordo sulla missione dei Paesi Bassi in Uruzgan.

Ma anche dopo che il governo è caduto, e pur essendovi una maggioranza dentro il governo contro il prolungamento della missione in Uruzgan, il CDA (il partito democratico cristiano) continua a cercare di convincere i partiti di valutare la richiesta della NATO per prolungare la missione.

La settimana scorsa è successo un incidente triste a Seaworld in Florida. L’Orca Tillikum ha preso il suo allenatore che era caduta in acqua prima dello spettacolo. Probabilmente la signora è affogata. Non è la prima volta che un’orca a Seaworld attacca un suo allenatore. Gli animali soffrono, non solo perché vivono in vasche troppo piccole, ma sono esposti continuamente a stress per noia e solitudine. Questo incidente dimostra di nuovo che questi animali meravigliosi e intelligenti non devono stare nei parchi di divertimenti, ma nella natura dove possono vivere in famiglia.

Anche l’orca Lolita vive in cattività per tutta la vita, ma per fortuna vi è una possibilità che questo possa cambiare. Sabato il 22 maggio è organizzata una manifestazione internazionale per liberare Lolita. Lolita è stata catturata 40 anni fa ed è stata staccata dalla sua famiglia. In tutti questi anni ha fatto degli spettacoli nell’acquario marino a Miami. In tutto questo tempo è stata in una vasca con le misure di 50% più del suo corpo. Questo è illegale, ma le autorità non fanno nulla. Vi sarà una protesta mondiale per liberarla o almeno migliorare le sue condizioni di vita. Una ricerca ha dimostrato che Lolita è in grado di vivere autonomamente nella natura. Il 22 maggio è stata pianificata una manifestazione all’Aja dall’ambasciata americana. Vuoi aiutare Lolita a restituirgli la sua libertà? Guarda il sito web “save lolita” per vedere le manifestazioni organizzate vicino a te o aggiungi una città per poterci fare una manifestazione.

Giovedì ho presentato il report annuale del parlamento 2008-2009 durante una riunione dei membri della camera dove era presente anche la stampa. Ho riflettuto su 1000 giorni del Partito per gli Animali nel parlamento! Il Partito per gli Animali è l’unico partito olandese che informa in questo modo il mondo en in particolare la sua base sul lavoro che fa nel parlamento. Abbiamo già raggiunto tante belle cose in questi 1000 giorni. Ad esempio il consumo di proteine animali è stato sostituito parzialmente da proteine vegetali (mangiare meno carne) grazie al governo. Il governo ha anche dedicato 6 milioni di euro per la ricerca su prodotti che possono sostituire la carne. Il Partito per gli Animali ha anche raggiunto un miglioramento delle circostanze delle galline che producono le uova, migliorando i criteri per le loro gabbie. Il Partito per gli Animali ha anche fatto un disegno di legge per vietare la macellaia rituale dove gli animali non sono anestetizzati. La presentazione ha attirato molti interessati e posso riflettere su una bella giornata.

Ho un’altra novità positiva; Unilever, che è il primo acquirente di olio palmare nel mondo, ha eliminato il produttore indonesiano Duta Palma dai suoi affari. Quest’azienda è responsabile per la distruzione completa delle foreste pluviale, una cosa che minaccia l’esistenza dei urang-utang. Il governo indonesiano ha dichiarato che l’eliminazione delle foreste ha causato la morte di 50.000 urang-utang. Unilever usa l’olio palmare in molti prodotti, ad esempio biscotti, patatine, gelato, margarina e sapone. Dal 2015 vuole usare esclusivamente l’olio palmare prodotto in modo sostenibile a lungo termine. Un sviluppo bello!

La prossima settimana sarà emozionante. Il 3 marzo vi sono le elezioni del comune e il Partito per gli Animali partecipa in sei comuni. La prossima volta ti faccio sapere come sono andate!

A week after the fall of the cabinet, the issue of Uruzgan continues to grip Dutch political life. Last week the Dutch cabinet resigned because the coalition partners could not agree on the Dutch mission in Uruzgan.

But even after the fall of the cabinet and a Lower House majority in favour of not extending the mission to Uruzgan, the CDA (Christian Democrats) continues to try to persuade other parliamentary parties to consider the NATO request to prolong the mission.

SeaWorld Florida was the scene of a tragic incident last week. Just before the start of a show, orca Tillikum grabbed hold of his trainer after she fell in the water. The female trainer probably drowned. It is not the first time that a SeaWorld orca has attacked a trainer. The animals suffer not only because the pools in which they live are far too small, they are in a constant state of stress brought on by boredom and loneliness. This latest accident is more proof that these magnificent animals don’t belong in amusement parks but should be free in their natural environments where they can live in family groups.

Orca Lolita has also spent her entire life in captivity, but fortunately that may soon change. An international demonstration is being organized for Saturday 22 May to free Lolita. Lolita was captured 40 years, taken from her family, and ever since she has been performing in the sea aquarium in Miami. In all that time she has been kept in a tank just one and a half times her length, which is illegal but the authorities have never acted. In order to free Lolita or to at least improve her living conditions, protests are being organized around the world. Studies have also shown that Lolita has the right skills to survive in the wild. On 22 May a demonstration is planned near the US embassy in The Hague. Do you want to do something to help free Lolita? On Thursday in the Lower House, I presented the Parliamentary Annual Report 2008-2009 during a meeting for members and the press. It was also an opportunity to look back at 1000 days of the Party for the Animals in parliament! The Party for the Animals is the only Dutch party that gives an account of itself in this way to its supporters and the world on the work it does in the Lower House. We have achieved a lot in those 1000 days. For example, the cabinet adopted as official policy a changeover from the consumption of animal proteins to vegetable proteins (eating less meat) and the cabinet set aside six million euros for research into meat substitutes. The Party for the Animals was also responsible for getting a ban on ‘enriched cages’ for laying-hens and it submitted a private member’s bill to ban the ritual slaughtering of animals without anaesthetic. There was much interest in the presentation and I look back on a wonderful and interesting day.

Another piece of good news; the world’s largest consumer of palm oil, Unilever, has instructed suppliers not to do business with the Indonesian palm oil producer Duta Palma. That company is responsible for the total destruction of rain forests, which is threatening the orang-utans. The Indonesian government stated that the deforestation had cost the lives of 50,000 orang-utans. Unilever uses palm oil in numerous products, such as cookies, potato chips, ice cream, margarine and soap. Unilever intends to use only sustainable palm oil from 2015. Great development!

Next week promises to be an exciting one. Local elections are being in the Netherlands on 3 March and the Party for the Animals is contesting them in six municipalities. Watch this space next week to find out how we did!
