As announced in my previous Worldlog, I held an international lecture at the University of Leiden, Campus The Hague, on the 22nd of June last. The lecture was completely sold out and the hall was full of people of all ages, from all corners of the world: from Morocco and Turkey to Australia and Canada. And of course: The Netherlands! Our sister parties were also our guests. At the lecture I emphasised the important role of our growing international political movement, which is making a change to traditional politics and introducing a new type of politics. One that no longer focuses on people but on the planet and all its inhabitants. It gave me great energy to be together with so many like-minded people, to speak with them and to listen to them, and to further shape our beautiful movement.

Last week, it was exactly one hundred years ago that Suze Groeneweg was the first woman to become a member of the Dutch Lower House. She was elected on the 3rd of July 1918 and became a member of the Lower House, among 99 men. For the occasion of this jubilee, I wore a special dress with the text ‘What are you doing here?’ That is the question that Groeneweg and other women fighting for women’s suffrage were often asked by men in politics around 1920. With my dress I wanted to ask for attention for the number of women in Parliament that is still low. The question ‘What are you doing here?’ is still current today. Our party is still frequently asked the same question by traditional politicians.

Last week, a research of the Utrecht University Medical Centre and the Netherlands Heart Institute confirmed what the Party for the Animals has been trying to point out for a long time already: most animal tests are useless. They do not lead to the successful treatment of ill people. Additionally, many tests are not performed adequately because of time pressure and tests that have already been performed before are repeated. This makes that more animals have to suffer and die. The Party for the Animals wants the government to invest more in the development of animal-test free techniques and to phase out animal tests quickly, so that all animal tests will stop.
The myth that animal welfare in the Netherlands is good is gradually invalidated by research and undercover operations. Research by the Dutch news channel RTL recently showed gruesome abuses in Dutch slaughterhouses: pigs which are drowning into boiling hot water, screaming and struggling fiercely, and calves and sheep which were skinned alive. When similar horrifying abuses came to light in Belgian slaughterhouses, the Dutch government and meat industry responded adamantly that such abuses are not occurring in Dutch slaughterhouses. As always, they immediately took the livestock industry into protection instead of the animals themselves.

Last week, the organisation Animal Rights also brought shocking practices in Dutch duck breeding farms to light: animals are trampled to death and struck to death against the stable wall. When loading for transport to the slaughterhouse, the ducks are throttles and kicked. The pain that is inflicted on defenceless ducks by the meat industry is indescribable and unacceptable. We immediately raised Parliamentary questions about this. Duck breeding farms should be banned.
But the meat lobby keeps attempting to keep a grip on politics in any possible way. For example, the annual barbecue was held last week near one of the buildings of the Lower House to treat the Members of the Parliament to meat and drinks. The Party for the Animals finds it unacceptable that such shameless lobby activities are conducted near a building of the Parliament. A product that causes so much animal suffering and is called “the most environmental harmful part of our food package” by scientists and also by the cabinet, and that is an obstacle to achieving the Paris climate objectives, should not be the starting-point of such event.

That is why we were very happy again with the Climate and Animal Friendly Barbecue at the square in front of the Lower House building. It is a positive counterpart to the irresponsible meat eating feast. At the initiative of the Foundation “An Animal A Friend”, the Members of Parliament were introduced to delicious vegan hamburgers. A wonderful message and a great way to let politicians and the broader public know that it is also possible to have nice food and a pleasant time without having to kill animals. We also enjoyed the delicious bites. As Lofti El Hamidi, editor of NRC – a large Dutch newspaper – said: “Why do we still eat meat? It is actually no longer justified.”
Finally, a nice success for our Rotterdam parliamentary group: Thanks to a motion by the Party for the Animals, the Municipality of Rotterdam, the second biggest municipality of the Netherlands, will get an alderman responsible for animal welfare. A very important step on the way to more attention for animal interests in the municipality!

Come annunciato nel mio Worldlog precedente, ho fatto una relazione all’Universita’ dei Leida il 22 giugno. Erano venduti tutti i biglietti e la sala era piena di gente di tutte le eta’ e da tutte le parti del mondo: il Marocco, la Turchia, l’Australia ed il Canada. E ovviamente anche dai Paesi Bassi! Erano ospiti anche altri partiti per gli animali di altri paesi. Durante la relazione ho sottolineato il ruolo importante del nostro movimento politico internazionale che e’ sempre in crescita e che sfida la politica tradizionale, portando una nuova forma di politica. Una politica che non mette pu’ al centro dell’atenzione l’uomo, ma il pianeta con tutti i suoi inabitanti. Mi ha dato una bella energia stare insieme a tanta gente con le stesse idee, parlando, ascoltando e formando il futuro del nostro bellissimo movimento.

La settimana scorsa erano passati esattamento 100 anni dal momento che Suze Groeneweg entro’ la Camera come primo membro femminile della Camera. Era stata eletta il 3 luglio 1918 ed arrivo’ nella Camera insieme ad 99 uomini. Per celebrare l’occasione, mi ero messa un vestito che diceva “Cosa siete venute a fare qui?”. Questa era la domanda posta dagli uomini alla Sig.ra Groeneweg ed altre donne che si impegnavano per ottenere il diritto di voto per le donne intorno al 1920. Col mio vestito volevo richiedere l’attenzione sul fatto che tutt’ora abbiamo un numero assai basso di donne nella rappresentanza civile ovvero politica. La domanda “cosa siete venute a fare qui?” resta quindi nel 2018 ancora una domanda attuale. Anche il nostro partito riceve spesso questa domanda dai politici tradizionali.

La settimana scorsa e’ stato confermato un argomento da lungo proposto dal Partito per gli Animali, nella forma di una ricerca del Centro Medico Universitario di Utrecht insieme all’Istituto Olandese per il Cuore: la maggior parte delle sperimentazione con gli animali sono inutili. Non portano a terapie efficaci di persone malate. Inoltre, per mancanza di tempo, spesso le sperimentazioni non vengono svolte in maniera corretta e sperimentazioni gia’ fatte vengono ripetute. A causa di cio’ devono soffrire e morire ancora piu’ animali. Il Partito per gli Animali vuole che il governo investa molto di piu’ nello sviluppo di tecniche prive di sperimentazioni sugli animali e cominciare presto a smettere di fare tali sperimentazioni, in modo di finirle del tutto.
Il mito che il benessere degli animali nei Paesi Bassi sia buono, viene smantellato pian piano tramite delle ricerche e delle immagini registrate in secreto. Ad esempio ultimamente il canale televisivo olandese RTL ha trasmesso le crudelissime situazioni nei macellai olandesi: dei maiali che affogano strillando e cercando di aggrapparsi con le zampe in una vasca caldissima e vitelli e pecore che vengono spellati dal vivo. Quando simili crudelita’ venivano fuori dai macellai belgi, il governo olandese come anche il settore della carne affermavano con molta convinzione che queste pratiche non esistessero nei macellai olandesi. Come sempre volevano proteggere subito il settore del bestiame invece degli animali stessi.
Allevamento di anatre
La settimana scorsa l’organizzazione Animal Rights (Diritti per gli Animali) ha messo alla luce anche delle crudelta’ tra gli allevatori di anatre olandesi: gli animali vengono ammazzati a calci e spapellati fino alla morte contro il muro della stalla. Durante il carico sul trasporto per andare dal macellaio, le anatre vengono uccise tagliandogli il collo e dato dei calci. La sofferenza che le vulnerabili anatre subiscono dall’uomo e’ indescrivibile ed inaccettabile. Abbiamo quindi subito fatto delle domande alla Camera. Dobbiamo finire gli allevamenti di anatre.
Il lobby dell’industria della carne continua pero’ in tutti i modi a tenere sotto controllo la politica. Ad esempio la settimana scorsa vi era la grigliata annuale in uno degli edifici della Camera per regalare ai membri della Camera ed altri politici della carne e delle bevande alcooliche. Il Partito per gli Animali trova inaccettabile che un’attivita’ di lobby di questo genere possa tenere luogo nell’edificio del parlamento cosi’ senza vergogna. Un prodotto che porta con se tanta sofferenza per gli animali e che viene descritto dagli scienziati ma anche dal governo stesso “la parte piu’ inquinante per l’ambiente della nostra dieta alimentare”, e che previene la raggiunta degli obiettivi climatici di Parigi, non dovrebbe essere lo scopo di un tale evento.
Partito per gli Animali alla Grigliata Parlamentare a favore del Clima e gli Animali
Eravamo di conseguenza molto felici della Grigliata a favore del Clima e gli Animali sulla piazza della Camera. E’ il positivo contrario della festa carnivora irresponsabile. Grazie all’associazione “Un Animale Un Amico”, i membri della Camera ed altri politici potevano provare un buonissimo panino col hamburger vegano. Un messaggio positivo ed un ottimo modo per far provare ai politici ed altri che mangiare bene e in compagnia e’ possible senza dover uccidere degli animali. Anche noi ci siamo goduti le bonta’! Lofti El Hamidi, direttore del importante giornale olandese NRC, diceva “Perche’ mangiare ancora la carne? In effetti non esistono piu’ argomenti per questa scelta.”
Infine un bel successo dei nostri membri di Rotterdam: grazie ad una mozione del Partito per gli Animali, Rotterdam, il secondo comune dei Paesi Bassi dopo Amsterdam, avra’ un membro del comune dedicato al benessere degli animali. Un importante passo sulla strada per avere piu’ attenzione, in modo strutturale, per le interessi degli animali in questo comune!
